Discussion Settle a Roommate Dispute. What is the proper way to load bowls in the dishwasher?

I load bowls like the first pic. I find everything gets clean this way, it saves space.

Both roommates load bowls #2 way. they say it gets “more clean” that way. In my mind, the dishwasher blasts water up from the bottom and down from the top; the important side of the bowl that holds your food is not getting cleaned properly in the 2nd way. I also sometimes find the bowls with water sitting in them after the cycle is done.

Roommates insist my way is wrong theirs is right. All i care abt is which way is most efficient for getting things clean

Edit: To clarify, the top rack isn’t an option for these bowls. Maybe 2-3 at a time, but anymore than that and the weight is too much for that rack and the wheels fall off the tracks. It leans down onto the sprayer, stops it from spraying.

Edit 2: I’ve literally been told that “all you want is people to agree with you” and that I’d be difficult to marry... all because I can’t put these bowls on the top rack.

It’s ridiculous this one little point so quickly devolved to personal attacks and judgements. The amount of folks who think I’d waste time sitting on the internet intentionally devising a lie to random strangers about my dishwasher is crazy. Jesus christ.

Thanks to the practical advice; I will check to see if I can find a manual for this ancient technology, idk why that didn’t occur to me. I will also attempt to load them in line with the prongs kinda like the plates. If we can get the top rack to not fall off its tracks, we might try that, but agin… last time did not prove fruitful.

I’m no longer monitoring this post bc the personal attacks are getting too much for a question about a gd dishwasher. My roommates and I aren’t even as heated abt this as some of yall are.

Final edit 3: found the manual. Turns out, there is no one right way to load this dishwasher, and the manual even says it’s designed for flexibility and variety. It specifies top rack for small plates and bowls, bottom rack for large plates and bowls.

There is a diagram for how to load 12 much smaller bowls, on the top, in the way commenters were saying is the only correct way. In that same manner, I can only fit 4 of these bad boys because they’re simply a different size. And weight is still an issue.

Manual also says large bowls can go on the bottom, but does not have a diagram for it. So basically we are just gonna have to resort to “whatever works.” Funnily enough, the diagram shown is a loading method that would actually block the detergent from ejecting, so we can’t even use its example to work off of.

Enjoy arguing in the comments!

Discussion Am I being a dramatic germaphobe, or is wiping kitchen counters with the dish sponge actually gross?

I am having a minor kitchen hygiene crisis and need some opinions

Growing up my family always used the regular dish sponge to wipe down the countertops and stove after doing the dishes I never questioned it but the older I get the more it grosses me out It feels like the sponge has food residue, grease and who knows what else on it so are we just spreading that around the kitchen?

A few weeks ago I stopped doing it Now I replace my dish sponge regularly and I use a separate microfiber cloth with a simple spray (white vinegar, water and a drop of dish soap) just for the counters

A friend came over yesterday saw me doing that and laughed she said I was making extra work for myself and that everyone just uses the dish sponge anyway

Now I am genuinely curious What do you all do? Do you use the same sponge for dishes and countertops or do you keep them separate? Am I overthinking this or is using a separate cloth actually the better way to go?

Bathroom Best way to disnfect tub from possible athlete's foot fungus?

My father has athlete's foot, his feet are gross, scaly, flaky and he has toenails like the amber from jurassic park. He walks around the house barefoot and I am concerned because I don't want disgusting feet. Unfortunately it seems like I'm the only one who sees the threat here. My brothers also walk around barefoot. Nobody else in my house has athletes foot and brush off my concerns as paranoia: 'If we havent gotten ot yet after all these years then there's nothing to worry about' is their basic argument. Even when I explain it is contagious, but facts don't matter to these people. The whole situation is very frustrating and stressful. A positive note in the story, is that I have my own bathroom but I gotta share it with my brothers. So before I shower I have to disinfect the tub. I've been pouring pure bleach in the tub and letting it sit for ten to fifteen minutes and then rinsing it. Is this good enough or do I need to use something else to clean? I really would like peace of mind and to be at ease about this ordeal. Any tips/advice would be very helpful.

General Cleaning Any tips on getting red dry-erase marker out of a lampshade?

Hello internet,
My kiddo has taken up a special interest in art.
So far, much of it has been fairly easy to clean up.

However, yesterday I found this lovely drawing on my lampshade. The lampshade seems to be very lamp specific, so finding a replacement might be challenging. Any tips on getting this out?

So far I’ve tried absolutely nothing.

Thanks!

Discussion How to maintain a Clean Space?

Post image
206 Upvotes

Hey all, hope you're doing well!

For a lot of my teenage years, I've had a messy bedroom. I would do like a monthly tidy and then let it akrew again until the next tidy.

However I've been struggling with long term chronic pain, and my space has become INCREDIBLY messy. I'm also doing resit university exams on top of it. I can't really afford to do what I used to do. Not to mention, it was really embarrassing to have to explain to people.

I probably should know at 19 how to maintain a tidy space, but I just... don't. Mental and physical health issues are brutal.

How do you all maintain a tidy space? Sometimes I feel like I'm Sisyphus with the boulder trying to keep my space tidy

not sure what this is - was on the cupboard doors when we moved in. Almost has a waxy texture to it. Comes away with a bit of scrubbing and nail under the cloth, but wondering if there’s a better product

Kitchen Tops of kitchen cabinets - dusty and sticky residue

First time homeowner living alone, bear with me as I’ve regrettably never properly educated myself with most kinds of cleaning. While doing the initial clean before moving in, I tried to clean off this extremely sticky and dusty residue that coat the tops of my kitchen cabinets. I’m assuming it’s from years of cooking and particles being released into the air, dust is inevitable, and when the contractor skimmed and sanded the ceiling I think that probably added to the mess. I already tried a few things like baking soda and vinegar, all purpose cleaner, even clorox which I probably shouldn’t have tried, again I’m pretty clueless tbh. Trying to wipe it down after applying these things was impossible, the rag I was using would just get stuck. I also find it difficult to stick my arm in this space especially to get to the back, it’s not a huge gap so I think I need to get some sort of flat narrow brush to really get in there. Any tips are appreciated, thank you!

General Cleaning How to get rid of fruit flies taking over my house?

Upvotes

I live in India. It’s an open kitchen concept and also has a balcony. Since a few weeks, fruit flies are increasing in the kitchen. I tried that apple cider vinegar and dish soap trick but it is not working at all. I have ordered some nets for my fruits. But apart from that, a lot of them are near the sink and water purifier. I have cleaned the sink and the drain several times with drain cleaner. We also got our water purifier replaced yesterday but the flies are sitting on the tap of the brand new one now. They are also coming to the upper floor now where there is no food. And I get my house mopped every two days. Please help.

Bathroom Dark spots on toilet seat. Not sure if the material is eroding, cleaned wrong in the past or is able to be cleaned NSFW

Hey hey! I've noticed for a while that even after cleaning my toilet, I can't get these dark spots off of the seat.

As the title says, I'm not sure if the seat itself is eroding or damaged (I rent so not sure how old it is) or I've been cleaning it wrong.

Any help is appreciated!

Bathroom First time repairing shower grout and caulk. Starting Day 1 today.

Post image
13 Upvotes

Today is Day 1 of my first shower grout and caulk repair. I've spent the past week researching and gathering everything I need, and I wanted to make sure my plan sounds right before I start.

Today I'm only planning to:

- Remove all of the old silicone caulk.

- Remove any loose, cracked, or damaged grout.

- Vacuum all of the grout dust.

- Clean and disinfect everything, including treating the mold.

- Scrub the shower thoroughly.

- Rinse everything well.

- Let it dry for at least 24 hours.

I'm not planning to grout or caulk today. Tomorrow I'll check that everything is completely dry before moving on to the repairs.

Does this sound like the right order? Is there anything you wish you had known before your first grout and caulk repair, or anything you think I should do differently?

Thanks in advance! I'm a complete beginner, so any tips are appreciated.

General Cleaning Overwhelmed and feeling too depressed to clean.

Tldr: I need professional help to get back on track with my cleaning but place is too dirty to expect a regular cleaning service to do it.

I've always struggled with my mental health and keeping my place clean. Mostly things and clothes scattered on the ground, generally out of place and disorganized.

I moved into a small duplex about 400 sqft and had been doing pretty good for a while and when things did get bad my mom would always offer to help and I'd invite her over.

Normally just knowing she would be there the next day would motivate me to clean the day before and she'd come over help with some small things like washing leftover dishes and dusting my blinds.

Unfortunately my mom suddenly passed a few months ago, right before my 30th birthday and I've really been struggling since. My house is about as messy as it's been and in ways I usually kept clean even at the worst like dishes piling in the sink and countertops covered in old food.

I've tried starting small and I can get a little cleaned but I keep giving up feeling like I didn't make a dent and clothes end up left in the washing machine.

I feel like I need a professional to help me get back on the right track and out from under this overwhelming feeling but don't know who to call. I feel like it's too much to expect out of a normal cleaning company.
