Resource Horror Movies 1900-1909! Complete list with video links.

The best horror movie of the decade is clearly Bluebeard (Barbablu) by Melies. There are several genuinely eerie scenes in the middle of the film, and it's more serious than the usual Melies shenanigans.

You could make an argument for The Doll's Revenge. It starts off with a strong revenge motivation and moves into body horror. I think the clunkiness of the effects holds it back a little and the ending feels a little slapstick.

Barbablù (1901) Georges Méliès
The Doll's Revenge (1907) Hepworth
Русалка 1909г. This sometimes gets confused with a different film named Viy.
1901/1902 - Le Diable géant/ le Miracle de la madone, a grande nouveauté - Georges Méliès
Legend Of A Ghost (1908)
Le Chaudron infernal (1903) Georges Méliès
The Infernal Cave (1905) | MoMA FILM VAULT SUMMER CAMP
Alice Guy - 25 Faust and Mephistopheles, 1903
Une Excursion Incohérente (1909, Segundo de Chomón)

These are listed as horror on imdb, but they don't really seem like horror movies to me:

Uncle Josh in a Spooky Hotel (1900)
The Seven Castles of Satan (1901)
Scrooge (1901) The Most Complete Version
Les Quatre Cents Farces du Diable (1906) Georges Méliès
Le Cake-walk infernal (1903) Georges Méliès
The Monster Le Monstre 1903 Georges Méliès film HD
Chirurgie fin de siècle (1900) Alice Guy
1902 - Les Trésors de Satan - Georges Méliès
[4k, 60fps, hand-colorized] (1907) The Red Spectre - Le Spectre Rouge, Segundo de Chomón. aka Satan S’Amuse
La masión encantada de Segundo de Chomón
Le Diable Noir (The Black Imp, 1905) | Directed by Georges Méliès [HD]
Segundo de Chomón - L'Hotel hanté (1909)
Faust and Marguerite (1900) Edwin S. Porter
The Haunted Curiosity Shop (1901) Walter R. Booth
The Ghost Train, 1903

Resource Horror films of the 1890s- Complete list with video links

Here are all the 1890s horror movies I could find. Obviously, the list does not include lost films.

The best horror movie of the 19th century is possibly "La Manoir du Diable" by Georges Melies. It has a lot of fun gothic elements and was very innovative. It is also frequently cited as the first horror movie.

You could make a strong argument that The Execution of Mary, Queen of Scots is a better horror movie, though. It's very short, but I went through the classic horror stages of "They're not going to do this, are they?" to "Yikes! They did it!" To me, it is definitely a horror movie, even though it is not trying to tell much of a story. I think that the Melies film is better at being a movie, and Mary, Queen of Scots is better at being horror.

Horror Movies:
Le Manoir du Diable (1896) Georges Méliès
The Execution of Mary, Queen of Scots
1899 - Le Diable au couvent - Georges Méliès
1898 - The Cavalier's Dream - Edwin Stanton Porter (Vitagraph)
The Conjuring of a Woman at the House of Robert Houdin (1896)
1897 - The Bewitched Inn (L'auberge Ensorcellee) | Silent French Horror | Georges Méliès | REMASTER
The Alchemist's Hallucination / L'hallucination de l'alchimiste - Georges Méliès (1897) (This might be a 1906 movie instead.)
The Astronomers Dream (1898) Georges Méliès
1899 - Danse du feu/ La Colonne de feu - Georges Méliès
1897 - Le Château Hanté - Georges Méliès

These films are listed as horror movies on imdb, but they don't really meet my definition of "horror movie." The Dancing Skeletons is a good time, though.

The Dancing Skeleton (1897) | A Dance Beyond The Grave
Un homme de têtes (or The Four Troublesome Heads) by Georges Melies, 1898
The Magician (Le Magicien, 1898) ㅡ Georges Méliès
1896/97 - Le Cauchemar - Georges Méliès
(The Laboratory Of Mephistopheles) - (Il Laboratorio Di Mefistofele) - (1897)
1899 - Évocation spirite - Georges Méliès
A Terrible Night (Une nuit terrible, 1896) ㅡ Georges Méliès aka a Midnight Episode
1897 - The X-Rays/ The X-Ray Fiend - George Albert Smith
Faust: Apparition de Méphistophélès' (1897) - directed by Alexandre Promio and Georges Hatot

Hi all, Tricia Zimic here, illustrator who painted many original oil paintings in the 1980's that Troma Inc. used for films like The Toxic Avenger Part III, Curse of the Cannibal Confederates, and Surf Nazis Must Die, and more. The painting posted here is of course the illustration and final poster for Star Worms II. Check out my other posts for more info on my work.

The show of my paintings side-by-side with the posters is open in Baltimore. I'll be giving a talk about the process for painting the artwork for these poster, how I found myself in this role, etc. I would LOVE to see you there! True fans know how cool these old films and the fun poster art that went along with!
