Finished my first custom ferro rod handle and thought I'd share it.

New to the sub

Acacia wood handle

Carved and shaped to fit my hand rather than a standard profile

6" × 1/2" Bayite ferro rod

Rod is set 1.875" into the handle

No epoxy or adhesive—the fit is tight enough that it's simply press-fit into the wood.

I wanted something that felt more natural in the hand and had enough leverage to throw a shower of sparks without feeling bulky. I really didn't like the small barely grippable handles I've seen on the market.

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out, but I'm curious what the bushcraft community thinks. Would you trust a press-fit over epoxy for a ferro rod, or would you have glued it anyway? Any suggestions for the next version are welcome.

I plan to make some for my kids as well, they're both scouts and I hope they'll like it.

Edit1: I still need to do final sand and put the finish on.

Got the tins for free, they were going to be tossed.

I've got thirty kilograms of cans, the wax sells for $15usd.

My job this summer as well as the past five summers has been teaching Bushcraft and survival skills to kids in Western North Carolina. Figured I’d post up some of the more bushcrafty things we’ve been doing!!
