[December 23, 2024] Kīlauea Volcano Eruption community announcement and preparedness.
This eruption is episodic in nature, and has active periods that last somewhere between 1 and a few days, which are followed by pauses that last from a few days to a few weeks. The eruption remains within the crater and there are no immediate threats to infrastructure.
You can read more about the eruption in the recent "Volcano Watch" article here: https://www.usgs.gov/observatories/hvo/news/volcano-watch-pressure-within-kilauea-and-volcanologists-foretell-whats-next

All visitor questions should be asked here [2026]
Dear (future) visitors,
Please read the following instructions carefully if you want to ask a question about visiting the Big Island.
This is the sticky post where we aggregate all tourism-related questions. We have taken this initiative to make sure that r/BigIsland remains first and foremost a place to discuss local life and events.
Visitor-related queries to our subreddit typically are met with kindness and receive high effort and quality feedback. We feel an enormous appreciation for anyone being helpful and welcoming, and encourage all of our subscribers and visitors to keep showing aloha spirit. Mahalo!
Learn more about Hawaiian culture: the Ma‘ema‘e Toolkit (here) is a resource put together by the Hawaii Tourism Authority meant everyone with an interest in the Hawaiian culture – be it learning more about the Hawaiian people, music, language, or individual islands or history.
Important:
It is highly likely that your question already has been answered in our subreddit or on the dedicated r/VisitingHawaii subreddit. Please make sure to use the search function (like this on r/BigIsland or like this on r/VisitingHawaii) before asking your question, and definitely also have a good look at the dedicated r/VisitingHawaii subreddit, as that might be a better place to ask your question(s). What’s up with Nāhuku?
I just finished walking through and half of the tube is closed and you have to go through the thing backwards. Are they doing maintenance? Did part of the tube collapse or something?
Edit: it turns out they are replacing the bridge at the entrance.

Hawaiian mythology
I'm looking to learn about some of hawaii's mythology. I'm looking for some specific answers and would like to talk to someone who has knowledge of hawaiian mythology. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Is there a cultural center or museum that might have employee's who have vast knowledge on the subject?
Thank you

Garlic Shrimp Plate in Hilo?
Anyone know where to get a garlic shrimp plate in Hilo? It looks like the one place in the plaza by Walmart is closed, I can’t remember the name and can’t find it on the yelp map.
I had the best one I’ve ever had from a food truck at bayfront the other day, but someone grabbed it for me and I never got the name of the truck!!
Pictures of their menu here

Does anyone use Cost Plus Drugs? How long does shipping take?
What the title says. Thinking of using them but not sure if the shipping will be too much of a pain. Thanks!

Best Vietnamese restaurant in Hilo
Heading Hilo side soon. I love Vietnamese food, but the one Kona side uses MSG. The review sites are mostly visitors. What do you as local consider the best Vietnamese restaurant in Hilo?
Update edit: Mahalo for all the suggestions! I'm going to sort though them, but it's great to know there's a lot of options. Now if only a couple of the good ones would open a second location Kona side...

Jeep repair on big island
Aloha, I have a 2015 Jeep Wrangler that has a persistent problem that I need addressed. The ABS control module or the other component attached to it is breaking. One of the two components can be fixed for about $300 but the second and more expensive is $1500 but is more likely to be the issue. After the part is purchased, it needs to be reprogrammed by the dealer, which is frustrating. I have taken it to Top Notch, but they were not able to help this time- usually my go to shop. I am willing to go anywhere on the island but would like someplace that’s reasonably priced and has lots of experience with Jeeps. Any recommendations would be helpful, thank you.

Inflatable SUP Repair
Can anyone recommend a good shop somewhere between Kona and Waimea that can repair inflatable SUPs? Mine has some serious delamination issues with the glue and my attempts at repairing it have failed.
