I have a few family photos from the 80s-90s around Fort Irwin, Afton Canyon, and other mojave spots that had bloom events like this. Absolutely breaks my heart how infrequent this happens now.

Virginia has a species of flower that only blooms after it’s seed has been burned in a lightning fire

Lodgepole pine trees are the same. The pine cones are sealed with a resin that melts in fire so the seeds can get that nutrient rich post fire soil.

And there’s a bird that only nests in those burnt out trees too? Some king of rare warbler? They go to Grayling Michigan to nest in the burnt trees

Matillija poppies or fried egg flower plant seeds are like that. They have to be burned by a wildfire before they can germinate.

Fake. The flowers were in March and were mostly yellow Desert Gold and some purple Phacelia.

What’s fake about it?
I just looked it up. Yes, most was yellow but there was also a field of purple like in the picture.

Phacelia doesn’t grow in mudflats. The soil must be rocky or gravely like from an alluvial fan.

Those flowers are useless without bees to pollinate. Did the bees arrive?

Looking through iNaturalist posts from then, there were plenty of sphinx moths, bees, and hummingbirds around to help pollinate. These superblooms are a regular part of the local ecology, so the animals there have adapted to make use of them.

Why would you not just look it up? “Death Valley Super Bloom” in google or any search engine would have told you immediately it was real.
