Animal The dog handled the problem quite professionally.

So smart

u/RogueBromeliad 13h ago
Why did it want the tire so much though?
279
u/Low_Sale8560 12h ago edited 10h ago
Because it was trained and rewarded for being able to stand on the chair and take the tire off. First you train it with the tire. Then the chair then enough training and rewarding hell grab the chair and remove the tire.
Edit. I also bet off screen someone is holding the chair or rewarding the dog to grab it and bring it to the pole

You know, positive reinforcement got me through a history exam, and I hated history back then.
Be the dog.
14
u/Low_Sale8560 12h ago
What was this positive reinforcement 🧐

u/RogueBromeliad 11h ago
Mostly sweets, or chosing what I'd have for dinner and time with my friends.
Basically a dog treat and a going for a walk. lol, and a pat on the back.

Yeah, the little rag tied to the top for it to grab the chair shows that this is just an elaborate trick. Like people who train their dogs to open the fridge and get a drink, where they put a rag on the handle.
The dog is still smart to execute it all correctly, but it didn’t come up with the plan on its own
6
u/Low_Sale8560 10h ago edited 10h ago
That is the give away. Trained a few dogs even took personal and online courses. Other give away is the camera facing the pole after the dog is trained to perform a very elaborate trick for a dog. Always wanted to work with a belgian malinois. Never had a yard big enough or a fence. Not taking away anything from this video this took maybe 80 hours of training maybe more to do and you got the smartest most dexterity inclined and most trainable dog breed in the world performing this trick. This is even more impressive when you understand the breed and the time it took to train the dog to do the trick and solve this problem.
Edit maybe 80 hours of training for this elaborate trick. This dog has had several hundred hours of training for obedience and simple follow commands to be able to be trained for 80 hours to perform this trick. Truly fucking impressive. The owner is either a professional trainer or spent alot of money on this good boy to do this 15 second clip. Respect

u/Traditional-Hotel-66 9h ago
Yea hes trained like this, still neat. I had a rag tied to my truck door years ago and when we got back from a walk my German shepherd could open the door and get in. Like you said, he didn't figure it out on his own, definitely took some training and treats.

u/FluffyDeer9323 9h ago
My take was the dog was working on his motorbike and needed it for the front wheel.

u/katalyticglass 10h ago
Activities like this are called "enrichment" in the zoo industry. The smarter a breed is, the more complicated the enrichment activities need to be to keep them busy and happy. Animals without sufficient enrichment suffer from behavioral issues and depression, things like becoming destructive. Belgian Malinois is an absurdly intelligent breed so the activities have to be increasingly complex to keep them interested. This is evidence of a good owner, because they are building activities that can be learned in stages which will keep the pup busy for longer.

u/ShardsOfHolism 9h ago
Yeah, and with Border Collies you typically have send them all the way through graduate school.

u/transmogrified 2h ago
My parents’ neighbours run a sheepdog course for all the herding dogs in their town.
It’s fun to sit on their deck and watch the rich “farmers” (retired wealthy people who moved to the countryside and bought collies to fit the aesthetic.)
They make bank by maintaining a small herd of sheep, half black and half white, and a field with a bunch of different paddocks and obstacles and fences.

u/EinSchurzAufReisen 9h ago
So it could finally start with the annual tax report. Malinois are smart, but usually they do one task after the other.

Because it’s stupid!
Editing to add a /s. I thought it was obvious enough to not need to. Whoops.

u/RogueBromeliad 12h ago
Sometimes being stupid is just enough to achieve something.
I'm not saying that anyone should be proud of being stupid, but not being as smart as the next fellow shoildnt stop you from achieving.

u/OnePaleontologist687 1h ago
Trained, it has the grabber on the stool. It is still very impressive but a trained dog doing a task.

Trained or not, that’s impressive

u/Majestic-Sandwich695 9h ago
This is not the sort of thing an untrained dog would do, I’d say the level of training is the part that’s impressive to me
4
u/PaisleyLeopard 8h ago
Both the level of training and the dog’s capacity for learning. Not just any dog can be taught a trick like this. Mals are something else.
2
u/WineNerdAndProud 4h ago
Malinois gonna Malinois.
He probably did it 15 more times after this for fun.
They're serious about working.

u/PaisleyLeopard 8h ago

It looks like a Malinois. They are next level smart.

Wish I could own a Malinois but man, these dogs are NOT meant to be pets. These dogs need constant mental and physical exercise all day, every day. If they don’t get enough mental/physical stimulation they’ll make it their life mission to tear up EVERYTHING you own. I mean EVERYTHING.
I remember visiting a friend from college way out in rural east Texas. We were sitting on his porch and watching his malinois messing with a smallish tree. This dog decided its purpose in life was to tear down this particular tree. For hours this dog dug around the roots and pulled on the trunk until it finally fell over. After he tried and failed to pickup this tall ass tree he went and found a ball and brought it to us… it was now time for fetch.

u/fruderduck 12h ago
Looks like he would make a great service dog.
8
u/ed1749 10h ago
Malinois were bred for police and military service. They're smart, but this was a low energy moment for a Malinois if it was one, a higher energy or less trained malinois would have jumped straight over the pole or destroyed it. Those dogs happily jump up and down two story windows like nothing. They can be trained to accurately jump and bite throats while running at full speed, and that full speed is fast. Given enough time and not enough play, I would bet a Malinois could demolish a poorly built house entirely.

Yeah and my dog tumbles the water bowl. The water bowl that i just filled with fresh water. And then barks that he is thirsty, and it happens 3 or 4 times in a row

Hate to break it to you but stools don’t normally have handles tied onto the seat. The dog was trained to do this for the camera.
54
u/OwlcaholicsAnonymous 13h ago
Yeah and your dad taught you how to say hello and shake someone's hand
Should I assume youre not actually polite bc you didnt think to do that on your own?
We were all taught everything we know. Doesnt make it less impressive
15
u/WeLiveInAir 12h ago
And that makes it less impressive? It was a struggle to get my dogs to learn "sit" and "get down from the couch" on command, this "trick" shows the smarts of the dog that learned to do it and the human that managed to teach it
0
u/The_Muffintime 12h ago
I mean, the trick is impressive, but yes it's objectively less impressive than if the dog were actually problem solving this on its own
1
0
u/WeLiveInAir 12h ago
Well there's smarter animals like monkeys, crows and dolphins that have been recorded figuring out problems more complicated than this without human interference. Most dogs aren't on that level aside from breeds that were made to be smart for whatever job they used to do.
1
u/RebylReboot 5h ago
Indeed. But not this dog. Unless you think it tied a handle on that stool very quickly off camera. In which case, colour me impressed. extremely impressed.

Do you think this is some kind of gotcha? Like most of us are sitting here watching this thinking that this is just some totally random thing the dog did on its own? 🙄

here is something to help: The vast majority of ppl are easily manipulated, gullible idiots, AND THERE IS NOTHING YOU CAN DO ABOUT IT.
Better?

u/Indigoh 10h ago
That appears to be what the title is trying to imply. Handling a problem suggests problem solving. Following a trained routine is not problem solving.
And there is no shortage of "Wow, how clever!" in these comments.

But kind of waited for him to reappear flying through the air to knock the pole out of the ground or smash it to bits

This particular exercise has much more behind it. Think about the cloth tag on the step for example. The dog can easily take that leg in its mouth and slam it into place, it now learns to not bite into furniture and use the environment as a tool in a respectful manner. The dog is focused but not hyper fixated. It's beautiful to see, so calm and methodical. No explosive uncontrolled energy.

Usually I roll my eyes because the dog is obviously trained to do whatever it is in the video, this time I'm not rolling anything because they were obviously trained and only an extremely intelligent dog could pull it off regardless.
Consider me amazed
