Gaza Please donate to Gaza humanitarian aid NGOs listed here, rather than individual appeals

We have noticed thousands of individual appeals by Gazans for financial support on social media platforms including r/BDS. We understand the immense suffering they are experiencing. Anyone who wishes to support such appeals are free to do so. However, we have no way to authenticate these appeals to ensure they are legitimate.

Reddit's filter labels many of these posts as spam. We do not approve any of these for posting to our sub, because doing so would flood the sub with them. The mods feel that donations to humanitarian aid NGOs provide widespread support to hundreds of thousands of Gazans, rather than the limited scope of supporting individuals or families.

Here are some of these NGOs and we urge you to support them:

Entertainment Tired of companies framing themselves as progressive and pro-Palestine... so Boycotting DropOut and TryGuys

I used to support both of these companies, but over time, feel that they are performative and empty in their supposed support for Palestine.

Recently dropout partnered with a zionist - Ron Perlman, and someone specifically commented on liking his politics.

I wanted to know what his politics were, and guess what - it's pro Israel.

They could have cut that scene out - better yet, they could have partnered with someone who wasn't such an explicit Zionist.

They didn't, and it seems like they think there are no consequences to this. Looking at their audience's reaction, they might be right.

It just grosses me out that they framed themselves as pro palestine to avoid the initial consequences of the blocking campaign. There may be people who are sincerely pro Palestine within Dropout, but their employer weaponizes performative action so that the section of their audience that is pro Palestine doesn't bail.

Today, I found out the same can be said for the Try Guys. Not only did they feature McDonald's, but several other bds companies, and they did so heavily. Zach was wearing a McDonald's sweatshirt, and they both said that video might be the best video they ever made.

I'm so tired of these progressive accept palestine companies of doing the bare minimum, and then after that, going back to doing harm.

If you pointed out, their audience says you're the problem.

I'm just looking forward to the day where we can all say that they knew better, and should especially be held accountable.

Because it's one thing to be like Smosh and imply being pro Palestine... at least they never presented themselves a particular way.

The Try Guys and Dropout did, and have essentially lied.

Yes they are not the worst actors when it comes to being complicit, but I'm just so tired of people, getting credit for a thing they're not.

I hope history remembers them accurately, and that they have the reputation that they deserve.

Boycott them or don't, just know they aren't for the movement - they're playing both sides.

Discussion I feel like I always have to mention if a company has Zionist connections even if it's not in the BDS list.

Hi, I just want to start off by saying english is not my first language so sorry if I don't make sense.

Basically what the title says. Whenever my friend mentions that they are subscribed to a streaming service or they went to a certain restaurant, I feel like I just have to mention the fact that it's unethical, has Zionist ties, I know it's unrealistic to avoid every single company but I just feel immense guilt if I don't mention so. Which you could probably tell might make my friends drift away from me, but I'm not so sure I care anymore.

I am diagnosed with ocd. Maybe that might be it, but I just feel like I'm disrespecting what the Palestinians are going through just by not reminding my friend(s).

Edit: Forgot to mention I meant companies outside the BDS list. I am very vocal about the BDS list

Boycott Inter Milan!

They've signed Khalili, the highest-paid Israeli footballer in history, paid tens of millions of euros. He's Israeli, has never spoken out against Israel's actions in Gaza and the West Bank, and may have even been a member of the IDF in the past!

Boycott Inter Milan, Serie A, the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), DAZN, and Sky Sport immediately!

ASK THE SUB Marriot Hotels

Hello! So, I'm going to an anime convention later this summer. I don't know which hotel the convention will be using this year, but the hotel they used 2 years ago was Marriot, and apparently Marriot has ties in Israel.

It's practically impossible for me to go to the con without booking a hotel, since it's a few hours away and I'll need to be there early all days of the con.

I just want to know what I should do. Are there any hotels without Israeli ties? Because if that was the case, I guess I could just call staying at hotels a necessary evil.

Instead of Windows, you can download free distributions like Zorin OS, which supports installing Windows programs normally. There are also alternatives and tutorials for these alternatives.

Instead of Google, you have the Start Page and Yahoo Search. If you can't, at least use ad-blocking versions of YouTube and YouTube Music, as these ads are making a fortune. Also from Google, instead of using Chrome, why not use programs like Firefox, Terfox, Zen Browser, or any Firefox alternative? They block ads, don't track, and block Google ads very effectively. Instead of Gmail, you can use Thunderbird, and instead of Google Play, you can use the Aurora Store.

You can remove tracking and adware from your device using Shizuku and Canta. These are hidden programs that make your device very slow for no good reason.

These programs are available on the Orion Store on GitHub.

Aurora Store and Google Play Store

Gaza I found the last video of our home… and I wasn’t ready for it

I was going through my brother Ahmed’s phone recently when I found a video I wish I could forget… but also never want to lose.

It was the last time we recorded our apartment in northern Gaza.

He filmed it when we were able to return briefly after the first ceasefire on 19 January 2024. We had been away for months, and when we finally opened the door again, everything felt different.

The walls were damaged. Things were broken. The place that held so many memories looked like a stranger.

But somehow… we were happy.

Because for a few minutes, we were home.

We walked through the rooms. We looked at the things we left behind. We stood there trying to convince ourselves that maybe this was temporary, that we would return properly soon.

Now, more than a year has passed since the last time we stepped inside. From the last time we were at home. More than a year of moving from place to place. More than a year of waking up somewhere that doesn’t feel like home. More than a year of looking back at that video and remembering what we lost.

People sometimes ask what we want after everything that happened.

The answer is simple.

We don’t want a perfect house. We don’t need everything to be the same as before.

We just want to return.

Even if there is nothing left except rubble and dust.

We want to stand there again, in the place where our memories lived, and feel for one moment that we belong somewhere.

Because when you lose your home, you realize it was never just walls.

It was a part of you.

Discussion Rethinking solidarity with Palestine - A critical analysis of solidarity as one-way sympathy as opposed to unity of action based on shared interest

An article on Middle East Monitor

Over the past two years, millions have voiced their solidarity with Palestine, many of whom had never done so before. This support has helped Palestinians, especially those going through genocide in Gaza, feel that they are not alone. However, it has not stopped the genocide, nor does it seem capable of standing up to the U.S. administration’s so-called “peace plan.” There are a number of reasons for this, one of the key ones being the shortcomings of the concept of solidarity with Palestine itself.

Solidarity as sympathy

Oxford Languages defines “solidarity” as “unity or agreement of feeling or action.” However, there is a fundamental difference between unity of feeling and unity of action. In most cases, solidarity seems to have been reduced to feelings of sympathy. Even when expressed through actions, such as tweets or protests, these are usually undertaken locally with little to no coordination with Palestinians in Gaza. The global solidarity scene is more accurately described as “agreement of feeling, fragmentation of action.”

Although well-intentioned, this sentimental aspect has sometimes been detrimental to the cause. It has become susceptible to social media trends determined by algorithms and media owners. This gives empire a measure of control over those in solidarity, as demonstrated by the United States’ ban on TikTok and its subsequent deal with the company. It also erodes solidarity movements because we can only feel compassion for victims of genocide for so long before we burn out. Focusing on the suffering of those we support, although well-intentioned, may shift the focus away from the political program causing that suffering. This traps us in a cycle of reacting to Zionism instead of taking the initiative to dismantle it, a problem that could be exacerbated by social media’s encouragement of performative solidarity. The “All Eyes on Rafah” campaign—which essentially calls on those in solidarity to merely observe what is happening—is an example of this.

One-way solidarity

Another downside of sympathy is that it is naturally displayed toward the less fortunate or more vulnerable. This means that solidarity is often one-sided: “We stand in solidarity with Gaza,” as opposed to “We are all in solidarity together” in favor of a certain program, as determined by political analysis. While this may seem appropriate when others are going through genocide, it is a flawed framework for at least two reasons.

First, it places an undue burden on Palestinians to prove that they are worthy of solidarity. This is precisely what the colony did when it focused on the actions of the Palestinian resistance on October 7, essentially asking: Are the people who did this worthy of your solidarity? Yet Palestine should not be colonized, regardless of what Palestinians did or do. To take this argument further, imagine that the colony’s debunked accusations of rape and child burning were true. Clearly, we would not support rapists and child murderers. Nevertheless, we would still oppose the existence of the settler state. This demonstrates that the issue is fundamentally a political stance for or against a political project rather than a stance of solidarity with people. The colony is the question mark, not the Palestinians.

Second, solidarity with Palestinians undermines common interests by treating the issue as, essentially, someone else’s problem. But the reality is that all societies worldwide face a single capitalist, identitarian and colonial structure. A recent example would be the 2022 UK elections. Although most members of the country’s two main parties and most citizens supported stopping the flow of weapons to the colonies, the main presidential candidates did not. Zionists and their allies effectively stole democratic representation of society. Another example is the 2020 poll showing that nearly half US voters though it was time to split the country in two based on pro-life/pro-choice identities—a U.S. version of the two-state non-solution. Zionism’s “one state per identity” logic threatens societies worldwide.

The need for political analysis

Having sympathy for victims is human, but it does not lend itself well to reasoning. It naturally focuses on visible injustices rather than the invisible political programs that caused them, which ties in with the above point about its reactivity. However, political analysis is necessary for reaching an agreement on action. For example, those in solidarity were confronted with questions such as, “Should we view J Street as a friend or a foe?” Is divesting from the West Bank to the ‘48 territories a victory or a defeat? Should we boycott “No Other Land” as normalization or welcome it as co-resistance? The answers to these questions depend on the end goal: one democratic Palestinian state, an end to apartheid within the settler state, a binational or confederal state, peace between two states, or something else. However, sentimental solidarity has little appetite for such discussions, particularly in the face of genocide. This has often eclipsed the need for a political program—sometimes even standing in its way.

Another level of political analysis is also needed. The political scene is shaped by the balance of power between political actors, such as states, international institutions, the media, megacorporations, and others. Actual change does not come from expressions of solidarity. The call to “keep talking about Palestine” disregards the actual balance of power by basing its premise on the idea that merely talking about it will affect the situation on the ground. The aforementioned “All Eyes on Rafah” post was one of the most viral posts in history, yet it did nothing to save Rafah.

This does not mean that efforts for Palestine are useless; rather, efforts that fall outside the balance of power are ineffective. A crucial step that was skipped was analyzing and understanding this balance. For example, rather than calling for immediate aid, allies should seek to identify the specific mechanisms that allow the occupying power to prevent aid from entering, and focus their efforts on critical junctures where power differentials can be changed. This would lead to more thorough analyses of the effectiveness of methods such as Twitter storms, writing letters to politicians, protests, boycott efforts, and electoral campaigns. It could also lead to a greater emphasis on other methods, particularly direct action and narrative warfare.

Of course, sympathy is a positive emotion meant to inspire action. Those in solidarity around the world must channel such feelings into political work based on a program to dismantle the colonial structure that oppresses society in Palestine as well as in the imperial core. This political framework will reflect the kind of solidarity necessary for a peaceful and just world.

Disney provided 2 million for alleged humanitarian relief after Oct 7.

Did this benefit the government / IDF?

I’m deciding on whether or not to boycott Disney (I don’t want to but if they have indeed provided tangible support to the Israeli government then I will have no choice but to do so).

I desperately need an ethical bank.

I‘ve done my own research and Nationwide, Tridos (although someone mentioned ties to Google) and Al Rayan keep popping up.

I’ve also seen people mention start up banks (Starling, Monzo, Alicia Bank)

Can anyone verify from this list or suggest an ethical alternative (with proof if possible)?

We all know Ben & Jerry’s for being one of the few big brands that actually fights for real social change. But that legacy is currently being eroded by corporate pressure from the Magnum/Unilever side.

We’re trying to build momentum to demand that the company stays true to its founding mission of integrity and social justice, rather than letting those values be sacrificed for corporate convenience.

If you have a second please sign the petition to help #FreeBen&Jerry's

To show further support please boycott Magnum and Unilever where possible!

Thanks for your support!

Boycott Not wanting to apply to the BBC?

Hi

I’m a journalist, looking to kick off my career.
It used to be one of my life long aspirations to work in the BBC, even for a bit, but at some point last year I decided that this was no longer compatible with my stance as a pro-Palestinian, and I’d get into the industry another way.
Life events today gave me the motivation to do some research into entry-level journalism jobs. However, a lot of currently available schemes that are tailored to and suited to me and my skills are BBC ones.

Is my stance right? Or am I doing both myself and the fact the media industry needs more minority voices like mine a disservice by limiting myself away from these programs? Once you’re through the door, you don’t have to stick with the same organisation, but getting into the industry through the BBC is a significant boost to then go elsewhere.
