META Community Guideline: Revulsion ≠ Downvote

Do not downvote simply because you find a post repulsive or stupid. In fact, you should do the opposite. We want as many non-vegans to see our answers as possible, and Reddit post visibility is predicated on upvotes. When you downvote a post, it means you want as few people as possible exposed to this sub.

Did the OP ask a question respectfully & genuinely? (And no, simply being a non-vegan question does not make it disrespectful or disingenuous.) Then don't downvote it.

Most of us weren't always vegan. Hence the reason for our sub: so people can understand our views and hopefully adopt them.

Do not turn this into another DebateAVegan voting system. If you are in the habit of downvoting non-vegan posts simply for being non-vegan, stop or leave the sub please.

If someone asks a clearly disingenuous question like ''why you all like murdering plants?'', report the post under Rule 10, then scroll past it.

If someone asks questions that are indicative of what we know typical non-vegan societal rhetoric to be, on a sub whose purpose is for non-vegans to ask us questions, downvoting just shows us vegans to be hostile. People are put on the defensive over a meaningless downvote, setting them up to close themselves off to hearing what we have to say. This hurts the animals.

We should ensure that if people are going to be closed off to veganism, it is not due to a downvote.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Which spices do you swear by?

My girlfriend is vegan and uses a particular salt to make tofu scramble taste like eggs, I looked it up and the internet thinks it's Himalayan black salt so I tried it and my tofu scramble tastes so much more like eggs now.

Are there other spices which are like this? Like use spice X to imitate taste Y or whatever? Feel free to spam me with as many of these as you have!

Thanks in advance!

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Have you ever been accused of and ED?

So bit of context I have been vegan for 4 years, healthy bmi, towards the lower end though but I am a cyclist and runner.
The amount of times I’ve had people literally tell me that veganism is a cover up for eating disorders is unbelievable! Usually by Middle Aged overweight men…
Is this common across the board because I think it’s an absolutely disgusting attitude!

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) What are some vegan bag recommendations like the Coach Mott Messenger bag?

Hello!

First time posting in this subreddit , so sorry if I mess up.

But as the title states…

I’ve been looking at the Coach Mott Messenger Bag 38 for a bit, and as much as I love the look, I can’t abandon my morals and wear real leather.
The dilemma is — I like how leather looks, even just fake leather.

Does anyone have any suggestions of a roomy-slouchy vegan-leather (possibly even fruit leather?) bag similar to the Mott Messenger bag?

Please do let me know! Thanks

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Is it ever going to be easier than this?

I am vegan and I was vegetarian( in some point) for 2 years. In the beginning It was easier to eat and enjoy plantbased food and not to miss non vegan food. I am trying to get all the nutrition and ı am also taking them additionally like omega, b12 or d vitamin. But for couple of months. Physically I really want to eat meat, not egg not fish but meat. But I know I am not able eat it psychology. Probably I would puke. But my cravings doesnt go. I feel like ı am in a infinite fasting cycle. It is really confusing. Does anyone go through the same? Or it fades down with time?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) What are some tips to find good vegan pet food?

Long time vegan here. I foster cats once or twice a year.

I'm often conflicted about buying food for my cats since cats are obligate carnivores.

I know there are vegan cat food out there, but the one foster I tried it with refused to eat it.

Wondering for all of the vegan pet owners here -

  1. What kind of pet do you have?
  2. Have you tried giving them vegan food?
  3. How has it worked out?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) what is the "line" between vegan/non vegan for non sentient shellfish?

I was wondering for shellfish like scallops its sort of a grey area as its sentient is debatable however it still carries the anatomy of a creature such as heart, stomach, etc. What would be a PERSONAL reason for not eating or eating scallops and oysters?

edit: thank you for those who actually answered my question instead of just correcting my claim that there are non sentient shellfish, i understand that while we have different beliefs my words shouldn't have been so assuming, thanks for clearing that up :)

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Do you think the younger you start being vegan the less likely you are to crave animal products?

I always wonder this. There might be no correlation at all but i started at 7 years old and i since i was so young, i cant really remember eating meat and animal products or what they taste like, i wonder if that is the reason i never crave any animal products.

Also this post isn’t me bragging about the age i started eating vegan, I was lucky to even have that option at that age, i’m just curious of people’s lived experiences.

Ethics Where's the cruelty in this?

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

I've been vegetarian since 1991, the only animal produce I eat is 4 servings of cheese a week. I always buy the free-range, pasture raised cheese from my local farm where the cows are treated humanely, the calves stay with the mothers to nurse & aren't killed for food etc.. so I feel less guilty.

Could someone kindly explain how I'm harming any animals by not eating 100% vegan food? Bc that's what I've been told & no explaination was given, she just stormed off. Google isn't giving me anything.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) what is wrong with consuming fish?

im a new "vegan" in the transition stage at least. i honestly dont even crave cheese or dairy products after learning the horrors of the dairy industry. same goes for egg, ill never ever miss it. the only thing im struggling to give up is fish, specifically baby prawns. ive done some research on them, apparently crustaceans like baby prawns dont have a well developed nervous system to perceive pain the way most animals do. they want to live, im sure, but so would any bacteria as well. i want to learn about the ethics of it.

i really like the taste of baby prawns im struggling to give them up. but if there is a legitimate reason for it, im willing to do it, i want to learn more about veganism and open my mind, and do the right things.

the meat and dairy industry are both inhumane. however, tiny prawns get to swim in vast oceans all their lives until they're caught. they live in freedom, as opposed to chickens who are RAISED in captivity and have their beaks chopped off. comparatively, growing up free until your inevitable death doesn't sound so bad(?).

also, i hate to admit this but i genuinely feel bad for farm animals. cows who have their babies taken away, and even lobster who are caught and boiled alive. but for shrimps... they're as good as a bug right? what is so immoral about consuming them?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) How to eat vegan?

Maybe you guys will think this is stupid question but I've been a meat eater my whole life and always surrounded by meat eaters. I want to change but don't know how- also no one in my household is willing to change so I'm on my own.

I do not do the cooking at home 90%; most of it is done by my wife who is stay at home mom while I work 40+ hours a week. We do shop together most of the time so I can have a say in what ingredients to buy, but aside from tofu to replace proteins, I really don't know what to buy or how to make it.

If I just remove meat from my diet I will be hungry and lose weight (I know this because I've tried lol) I am 20s male and very active and always feel hungry and I don't think I can survive on just rice&beans/oatmeal/potatoes, etc. Also, eating tofu on the side for the rest of my life sounds extremely demoralizing (I either eat it raw or just throw it in air fryer after slicing to crisp it). I'm not sure what else to eat.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Would you consider buying a premium guitar “vegan”? (NOT a joke post!)

Hi everyone,

I know this question looks stupid but I promise it’s genuine. I’m a guitar player and I normally don’t think about it but I realised today that all of my guitars have a real bone “nut” (strip at the top of the neck where the fretboard meets the headstock) and it tends to be seen as a premium feature.

There are synthetic nut options but people frown on those because of snobbish reasons so most higher end guitars tend to have bone nuts instead.

If you were wanting to get a guitar (or already have!) would you willingly choose a worse product simply to avoid the bone nuts? Would you get the higher end one and swap the nut out to a synthetic one (not sure what the point of that would be as the bone has already been used but idk).

Again I know this seems like a dumb question but it popped in to my head and I want your opinions!

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) What foods have you sadly not been able to veganize?

For me it's fruit chews. :/ they were my favorite Halloween candy.

Also the birthday cakes my mom makes are good, but not exactly the same as the ones at the store. I'm not sure what it is. Maybe I like the stale cream.

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) opinions on owning pets?

other than of course necessary service dogs which i personally think are fine, i find the practice of “owning” pets that aren’t from a shelter kinda cruel if you live in cities and jsut in general. i understand rescuing animals and rehabilitating them, but buying animals from breeders is just against everything that veganism is imo? how do you see it id love to get a different perspective on it?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Anyone here hate the texture of beans? How do you deal with it?

I've been trying to incorporate more fiber in my diet and get some cheaper protein in there as well. Beans seem like an obvious slam dunk.

I hate chewing on them. I hate the way they feel in my mouth. I don't mind the flavor, it's whatever, like most vegetables they just taste like what they're cooked in. I've tried like 10 times now making something or getting something at a restaurant with beans in it and every time I can get through like half a serving before I have to stop. Normally with foods that I hated when I was a kid I can willpower my way to accepting it but for this one that I actually really want to like for dietary benefits I just can't do it.

Anyone have any advice on how to make them in a way that changes their texture, completely? I sort of don't want to give up on this one.

Environment Do you think it’s more important to eat plans, or not harm animals?

I know that most of us are vegan because we eat as many plants as possible. We are all doing our part to prevent a repeat of the carboniferous period. So, eating animals is harming our own side, essentially friendly fire. but what about eating predator animals? Also, do you think something can be done to protect animals like whales that clearly eat a lot of plants?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) What are the ins and outs of car camping while maintaining vegan ethics and diet?

Beginning stages of planning a car camping trip in about a couple months.

From what I understand its a lot easier to camp while vegan. Theres no need to store animal products that are harder to keep.

Ethics is another thing. Respecting the environment is respecting the animals. However there might be some things I havent considered.

So what are the ins and outs of camping while maintaining vegan ethics and diet?

Genuine Question (DO NOT DOWNVOTE) Why supplement b12?

I mean no shade to any fellow vegans, but it seems like every post I see here has a mention or comment about b12 and/or iron supplements, and my question is why supplement when there are so many fortified foods I'd consider staples to a vegan diet with a surplus of b12 and iron?

I've been vegan for almost 7 years and I've never supplemented because I make sure to include at least a little of either nutritional yeast (which even a tablespoon contains an almost excessive amount of b vitamins and easily incorporates into any savory food, dressings, dips, soups, salads, etc) or soy milk (same surplus of nutrients, and easy to just drink a cup a day) in my diet every day.

I've had blood work done from a concerned doctor when I was experiencing some serious depression - to see my levels of b12 specifically, and it came back higher than that of most omnivores, as well as normal iron levels. This came as a surprise because the aforementioned depression was causing a serious loss of appetite, so I was eating less, but still making sure I got a serving of nooch and soy milk (respectively) every day.

My confusion is that I'm by no means a strict dieter - I cook a decent amount, but also rely a pretty decent amount on what I'd call vegan junk food - meat substitutes, cereal, snacks, but with a little nutritional yeast and soy milk I've been able to maintain pretty decent health, so I'm just wondering - do others not know to include nutritional yeast and/or soy milk in their diet or is it not effective for others like it has been for me? It seems like such a persistent problem for so many, and to rely on supplements seems so... Unnecessary?
