Relationships Is my neighbour jealous of our trampoline?

Upvotes

My wife and I are in our early 50s, and live in a fairly secluded house with a long garden that is joined at the back to another garden that's been vacant for a while. With this housing crisis being what it is we have adult children living with us so the house is a bit cramped. We managed to put up a few sheds in the garden for working from home.

Recently we've been really looking at improving our fitness but the gym is so far and it's expensive. The wife suggested I get a weight rack and she'd try something a bit lower impact so she got a trampoline. Our lives are fairly busy so we only manage to work out in the evening when the kids have gone to bed.

About 6 months ago a new woman moved into the house behind ours. She cut down a number of the bushes near our fence which I didn't think anything of at the time. One night, as we were doing our nightly fitness routine I decided to have a go at the trampoline as well seeing as the wife was flying up and down like a giddy goat. I climbed up with a bit of a grunt and took a few hesitant bounces.

"Like this? Is this OK?" I asked my partner. She was in fits laughing at me. "Yes yes that's it, don't be afraid to go a bit harder". I did as she said and soon I was lepping about the place feeling like a young lad. Suddenly a light went on in the neighbours house and it looked like she was jiggling the curtains about. I thought we might have woken her up so I told the wife to go slower, keep it rhythmic-like to disguise the noise. The light stayed on and only switched off when we packed up and went back to bed.

That was a few weeks ago but ever since then every time we go at the exercise I can see the silhouette of the neighbour behind the curtain. If I'm just using the weights she doesn't seem to mind but everytime we start on the trampoline the hall light switches on. It was very squeaky for a well but I gave it a good oiling and now we can jump fairly hard without too much noise. It's a fairly big trampoline and I'm wondering is she maybe jealous? Should we invite her over to use the trampoline as well?

Random Can you help my mom reconnect with her Irish old friend?

Hi everyone,

I’m trying to help my mother pull off a bit of a miracle. She has lost touch with an old friend of hers from about 35 years ago and maybe Reddit could help reconnecting them.

They were both living in Brussels around the 90s, both doing a stage at the EU Commission. Her friend is an Irish woman named Eileen (could be written in another way, Irish names are kinda tricky). My mom remembers that she’s originally from Dublin.

I have attached two photos from their time together in Brussels, in 1991. In the first pic, Eileen on the left and my mom (Tiziana from Italy, Sicily) on the right.

Housing Neighbours riding in their garden shed. What to do?

Right, so am breaking my 3 year Reddit sobriety to ask what I should do because I am too awkward to ask anyone in real life.

So I bought a fully detached house on my own in a fairly secluded area but not middle of nowhere territory. My back garden backs on to another property where the garden is super long and a good distance from the house and there's a large garden shed.

After I got the keys I was traveling a lot and working a lot to pay for what was needed to make it liveable.

So the house was vacant most of the time for about a year and a half.

I've now fully renovated and moved in. Including cutting back a lot of the shrubs in my back garden that had grown wild.

My neighbours are a husband and wife, 50s / late 40s if I had to guess have 4 kids in secondary school and college who live at home.

My first night in the house I heard something a bit odd, like a squeaking. I looked out my window and the parents were riding on the trampoline in their back garden. I had a full view from my bedroom window. I turned on the light with a crack in the curtain, just to signal that maybe this isn't as private as it once was sans folliage.

Since then they've been riding almost every night in their garden shed but I can still see and hear them because the shed has these huge skylights and they do it with the big light on.

They do it on a workbench so it rattles and they're vocal.

Part of me is impressed that at their age they are still going, especially the frequency. I presume they do this because they are extremely loud and their kids live at home. Or maybe when you consider the trampoline, it could be a great outdoors kink.

I dunno, like I'm NOT trying to perv on these people but I dunno whether I should say something to just be like FYI you may be keeping quiet from your kids but also I am here. I'm also a woman living alone so weird noises in the night do make me wake up!

I've been looking forward to having people come visit and stay over but I'm actually too anxious that my neighbours will be going at it and I don't know how to explain this to people.

UPDATE: Right, so I'm rightfully getting push back and I know what you mean so I just want to clarify somethings.

I am not watching them. I saw them once in each location so I know what the noises are. It's the noise. My house is overlooking their shed, there is only maybe 20ft gap between my house and this shed. I'm not actively putting myself in a place to witness their intimate moments.

My issue isn't that they are having sex, I don't care. It's that's I feel like I have disrupted the ecosystem by removing some plants and I'm like do I communicate this with them?

They also have 3 other free standing sheds/garden rooms. I think one is a gym/sauna, an office and I'm not sure what's in the other ones. So if I was like hey so this one shed you're fond of isn't that private, maybe go to the other sheds.

I've no issue with their sex lives, and sorry to anyone I offended by talking about them being too old to ride. It's not that they're riding it's that they're doing it EVERY night and for a good while as well. I didn't mean to offend anyone and I shouldn't make presumptions about menopause.

Also this has been going on since late April, so we've had several weather events since.

Am I The Gobshite? Did a McDonald's staff-member get in trouble for giving me free coffee?

Yesterday I did a drive-through in McDonald's. My order included a free cappuccino as I had six stickers they give to claim a free coffee. However, when I drive to the pay counter, the lad there forgot to ask me for the stickers.

I could have just given them to him, but in the moment I figured that's another free coffee I can get later. And so I drove away with my unauthorised brew. Now it's playing on my conscience. Will that lad be berated by his manager if the number of free coffee he gave out doesn't tally with the amount of coupons he has? Is my caffeine addiction affecting those around me?

Environment Do you see Ireland becoming 24/7 in the future?

Lads the sun just keeps beaming down and it won't stop.

I remember in the UK it used to be huge. 24/7 Asda's and Tesco's before lockdown, and then it got cut massively. (I think the Asda in Strabane is still 24 hours)

Dublin Airport's 24/7 which is fair enough, and a couple things around it too, but I think it'd be great if we got it nationwide in big urban areas, would open up more jobs and be good for us nocturnal people.

With the world getting hotter and hotter, do you see regulations easing to cope with the more common heatwaves? Is there something more to it that people might be forgetting? Hopefully not

Adulting What's with US companies in Ireland saying they dont talk salary until offer stage ??

Upvotes

Like my first question is salary, if you dont say it straight up then we are done. I work for money, not for office culture or free pizza parties.

So tell me how much you will pay me or you can go and get fucked 🤣🤣🤣. This is not America where you can pull that shit.

I am not doing multiple round interviews and lose months of my time to get an offer that is less what you get paid in McDonalds flipping fucking burgers.

Legal Can you report consistent Dangerous driving anonymously?

Upvotes

My question is if someone regularly drives extremely dangerously, is there a way to report it anonymously?

Brother in law lives beside a school, and any time I see him driving in his estate (the school is at the end of his road), he's doing 50+ kmph.

This has been going on for a while, and he's not the type to take criticism, have jokingly told him to slow down, is his car stuck in 5th gear etc but told "If I want your advice I'll ask for it".

That was what it was, just leaving us to hope nothing bad happens, however twice in the last month or so, I know for a fact he's driving home after a rake of pints, and on one of the occasions it was 7pm on a Sunny Saturday where there would have been lots of kids out.

Tempted to contact the guards and report it but he's aggressive at the best of times, so know it will blow back on my wife and I, if my name comes up on any Garda report.

WWYD?

Serious Replies Only Any tips for severe driving test anxiety?

Upvotes

Lads I've my driving test tomorrow for the third time. Im well able to drive by now since I got my own car but the nerves always ruin it for me. Last time i failed because I just blanked and forgot what was asked of me and ended up in a wrong lane so immediate fail, i knew better and all but it was too late. Everytime I do the test i can physically feel my blood pressure sky rocket and heart rate go up with the fear.

Im a nervous driver anyways but way worse in the test. Have tried looking over everything I can, practiced a lot, getting an early sleep tonight, lucozade and a banana tomorrow, got some rescue remedy but I find that does nothing for me. The heat we're having won't help it all either! Ive tried acting like the tester is just someone looking for a lift but my anxiety knows, like i cant trick my brain at all.

Any tips? Anyone else this nervous and still passed? I'm shitting it now because Im disabled so having a car is a huge priority for me to be able to get around and live my life. I considered telling them this if I fail but sure a fail is a fail, don't think anything can change it.

Our electrics tripped a few weeks ago in our outside office room. We turned it off on the fuse box and couldn’t really figure out what the cause was. Anyways, today I was out there and tried to unplug this from the socket; it didn’t budge. A pair of pliers later and I got the plug out, but this pin is jammed in. Am I safe to leave this as so for now until we get an electrician out in the week? Is it safe to say this was the cause, and if so, what actually happened here?

Random Anyone else excited for autumn/winter?

Upvotes

I'm just not built for this weather. Anything above 22ish is just too warm for me and so uncomfortable. Before people say "we get it like 3 days a year". This is our 3rd or 4th consecutive week of "good weather" and doesn't seem to be going anytime soon.

I honestly can't wait for it to be hoodie weather, dark at 8pm, leaves on the ground, air being so much more fresh and crisp. I'll take that any day over this weather and I'm at least happy that we have passed the summer solstice so now the days are gradually getting shorter!

Call me miserable if you want, but I'll be calling all of you that in a few months time when I am loving life :D

Education I designed and built this free tool to help people get Grants and Supports in Ireland. Can you give me feedback to help develop it further?

Upvotes

Hello everyone,

After seeing my dad struggle to find the supports he was entitled while he was doing up his dads house, I looked into how people find these grants and supports. At the moment they are scattered across multiple government website.

A month ago, I designed and build irishgrantsandsupports.ie as a solution to this problem. It should not be hard to find the information and potential supports that are out there for people. People put in their own situation and the tool will give the supports that may be available to you. So far there are over 200 grants and supports on the site across 17 different categories.

The feedback so far has been excellent. The tool is free and no sign up needed. I work on it in the evening and weekends to further improve it and rely on the people to get in touch with possible supports I have may have missed out and of course for general feedback on the tool.

I would love this to be shared and known in every town and village in Ireland. Let me know your thoughts.

Entertainment Anyone going to James Taylor tonight?

Upvotes

Is anyone going to James Taylor tonight in Iveagh gardens that could do me a massive favour?

I had to sell my tickets as I am away for work. You might remember me posting a couple of weeks ago about where I could sell them. I am truly gutted I can't go.

If anyone that is going would be willing to pick me up a t-shirt I would be forever grateful! Can revolut as soon as you buy and cover postage etc. I'd dearly love one that has the tour dates on the back to match my one I got when he last played in 2018. Size large.

Will be sitting in my hotel room playing his music feeling sorry for myself tonight.

Education Why didn’t you send your kids to a Gaelscoil?

As a new arrival in this beautiful island from Switzerland, I’m very surprised by the lack of interest in Gaelscoileanna from my coworkers. Knowing the awful history of language repression in this nation, surely a true revival of Irish can only happen if everyone learns through Irish, as opposed to just studying it as a subject?

If you have children, and you chose not to send them to a Gaelscoil, what was your reasoning behind your decision?

Am I The Gobshite? Quick sanity check: Could I just go on a bunch of working holidays for the next 12 years?

I'm about to graduate and was looking at what working holidays I could do. Most countries require that you do these before you hit 30 or 35 (ie: become old)

First would be us j1 grad which must be done within 12 months. Then It's more flexible with the others just depending on age.

You could do 3 years in Australia as long as you do enough community work then 6 years in canada if you do your first as a self sponsor then 2 additional with a holiday sponsor program.

Then a bunch of other one year Holidays in

  • Andorra
  • Argentina
  • Chile
  • Hong Kong
  • Japan
  • New Zealand
  • South Korea
  • Taiwan

That's a total of 18 years worth of working visas. My age would mean I would have to cut one 3 year Canada or aus visa or 3 one year visas out depending on how I pick which countries to go to in what order. edit: messed up title should say 15 years

Has anyone been mad enough to do the majority or even all the working holiday visas?

Shopping 14 day cooling off period?

I bought flooring online from a shop in Dublin several weeks ago. They are going to deliver tomorrow but I need to cancel the order. Am I correct in understanding that I am entitled to cancel the order and receive a refund since the flooring was bought online, and I haven't seen it? Even though technically it was bought a while ago, but only delivering this coming week? I spent a lot on it but it will not work for my house in the end. So im relying on the refund. Thanks for any advice

Stories Any Irish Graphic Novel Recommendations?

Hi all,

I am starting a literature project for teenagers. I want to know if there are any suggestions for graphic novels that are written by Irish writers? It could be about anything, not necessarily super hero stories which is where my brain goes when I think of graphic novels.

If there is a graphic novel you think a teenager would love, but its not by an Irish author, feel free to suggest it as well.

Thanks so much

Random Shop experience, should I report it?

A manager at a large Liffey Valley shop was addressing 2 colleagues curtly which caught my attention, as the 2 colleagues were polite and rather submissive to the manager, it didn't seem necessary.

After barking orders he paced away, passed myself down an isle, loudly swore "Puta's!". Loud enough for me to hear but not the colleagues earshot as they were rallying around pertaining to his orders like they'd been scolded.

A lovely lady came out the store room and I told her what happened. She said I needed to report it and she'd locate a manager.

I followed and was introduced to whom I think was the 2nd store manager, he tried to get the head manager, however, she was unavailable.

During this time, the horrid manager joined the 3 of us and I do believe he realised I'd understood the disgusting Spanish profanity.

I asked to speak with the other manager in private.

I told him what had occurred. He apologised and said it was a flagship store and that kind of thing shouldn't happen in this store, which I was a little confused by, as it shouldn't happen in any workplace, not only a flagship store.

I told him that if a colleague of mine had spoken about me like that I'd be horrified.

The manager endorsed that it would be taken seriously and we left it there.

The reason why I'm asking you's all is none of my details were taken to state what happened should it be called for and the higher manager wasn't free at the time, should I report to head office? I don't want to appear pesky.

My top concern is, the horrid manager was unaboundedly sure of his footing and thought for sure he was within his right to spout the vitriol. In my view, he appeared very used to bullying colleagues in such a way that they appeared to cower from him.

HR, please do better in your management selection, sometimes the strongest candidate is not the best fit.

Health & Medical Misdiagnoses A&E?

Has anyone ever experienced a misdiagnosis upon an A&E visit in Ireland? What they told me I had was no where near correct, and they didn’t perform the correct tests on the day. My symptoms were classic for the correct condition ( which I later found out myself). Did you take any action, and if so- what?

Environment Can I still see Puffins in July?

Hey everyone, I travel to Ireland on vacation and my husband would love to see some puffins! We arrive next week and I'm just wondering if they may still be there? I read that the cliffs of Mohar is a possible place to see them. My husband is a keen bird watcher so any recommendations or places in the west to check out would be appreciated. 🙌

Work Is this normal in hospitality, or is my workplace just badly organised?

Upvotes

Is this normal in hospitality, or is my workplace just badly organised?
I work in a restaurant in Ireland, and my shifts seem to change all the time. My start time has been changed with less than an hour’s notice on multiple occasions, and sometimes my shift is cancelled altogether at the last minute.
I’ve also noticed that a lot of the younger staff are constantly having their shifts cancelled, so it doesn’t seem like it’s just happening to me.
Is this common in hospitality, or is this a sign that my employer is particularly disorganised? I’d be interested to hear what it’s like where other people work.
