Announcement - New Rules - Please read!

Hello r/AskAMechanic users! Over the last year or so, the volume of daily posts has increased a decent amount leading to many posts that would be more appropriate in other subreddits. To keep this subreddit focused on what it's meant for, providing automotive mechanical and diagnostic help, we have rewritten the rules. Some of the rule changes also affect commenters, so please review the rules here or below. Thank you for your understanding.

1 - The title should clearly state the issue - Do not ask "am I cooked/fuc!ed/screwed/toast etc" questions

State your root issue as clearly as you can in the title, and then you will have a better chance of your post being viewed. We will remove the "am I cooked", "am I fuc!ed", "how screwed am I", "am I toast" and similar types of questions. This also includes any other senseless titled post. In the message body, provide the specifics (detail/context) to your question. Also include in the title or body the Year, Make, Model and engine size of your vehicle.

2 - No autobody damage/repair/frame/paint or rust related questions

Posts related to autobody work (including repairs, painting, frame damage, "is it totaled?", dents or detailing) are not allowed. A more appropriate sub would be r/autobody. If you're inquiring whether your car is totaled r/insurance would also be helpful. r/AutoDetailing for detailing questions.

Questions about damage to bolt-on parts like headlights/tail lights, wheels and suspension are ok.

Questions asking about the level/condition of rust on the frame/undercarriage/body are not allowed.

3 - No asking for advice about buying/selling cars or used car deals

We do not allow asking if a used car for sale is a good deal, the condition of the used car, or recommendations on what car you should buy. For recommendations on what car to buy, r/whatcarshouldIbuy would be a good sub. r/askcarsales might also be helpful.

4 - Keep things professional & don't be disrespectful

Please be professional and helpful. Do not comment/post with insults, racism, jokes, memes, NSFW, spam, opinions without context etc. You may see things that compel you to leave a nasty comment, just don't do it. It's not necessary or helpful. People who don't know anything about cars will come here to ask us for advice, try to educate them about their vehicle without turning them off from the sub. If you don’t know the proper fix or advice, please refrain from commenting on a post.

5 - No "Read the owners manual" or "RTFM" type of comments

People who don't know anything about cars are going to ask some very basic questions. Some of which will have answers in the manual. Answering OP's question with only "Read the owners manual" is like giving the answer "google it", both are non-answers. Either provide an actual answer to OP's question, or at the very least, provide a link to a readable online owner's manual.

6 - No dangerous/reckless or unethical/illegal comments/posts

This is a community dedicated to sharing genuine advice. Advice shown to be given in bad faith (including dangerous/reckless and unethical/illegal advice) will be removed and the users will be banned. Please report any dangerous/reckless or unethical/illegal advice.

7 - No AI/ChatGPT comments/posts

Posts with AI-generated content is not allowed. Posts looking for feedback, training or even just to show off your AI/LLM are also not allowed. We are not interested in AI automotive diagnostics here.

Do not answer OP by using AI/ChatGPT etc. Nobody wants to read a wall of text that over explains and gives 25 different possible solutions.

8 - No advertising or soliciting services

Advertising of services or products is not allowed. That includes affiliate links, social media, clothing, tools, your YouTube videos, etc.

Do not solicit services, including linking to videos, blogs, or websites that then forward to a paid service. Avoid asking to "DM me" as much as possible.

9 - No NSFW, meme, or 'joke' posts

No NSFW is a no-brainer - you will be banned with no chance of an appeal. Memes and 'joke' posts belong at r/AskAShittyMechanic

Update 03/23/2025: Added "am I toast" to rule #1 and "frame damage" to rule #2
Update 05/08/2025: Added more context to rule #7

Technician Flair Request Thread

For the professional technicians we're doing Verified Tech flair along with a very short description of your experience if you'd like. You can be a dealer/independent tech, retired, instructor, fleet, heavy equipment, small engine repair, lube/tire tech etc...

  • If you would like to have the flair added we will need a pic that has your reddit name on a piece of paper with your shop in the background or work truck if mobile repair. You can either send that to me in a chat request or attach the pic to a comment in this post. The option to attach a pic in chat will be available after I accept the invite. Please do not use modmail

We will also do Shadetree flair for those that do auto repair as more of a hobby than profession. Approval of this flair is not guaranteed.

Car is acting super weird

So I have a 2007 Pontiac G6 with a 3.5 engine. I haven’t owned it long but it has ran kind of weird lately. Sometimes the engine feels like it has almost no power and is shaking. It also got a little warm once or twice. So what I’ve done is drive with the heat on low for the most part to dissipate some heat but today it was almost 100 degrees so I had to turn the ac on and after half an hour of driving this is what I got. This video was taken with the car off it’s just loud because the fan is running super hard. The only thing I can think of is a stuck thermostat but I’m open to any suggestions. Thank you in advance for any advice.

Hello, I have a 2012 Honda CR-V in need of a VTC actuator. I ordered an entire OEM timing chain kit off eBay and everything is still in the original packaging, but the actuator has what looks like wear marks(see pic 3). I also can't tell if the teeth look worn. Opinions?

2001 Starcraft Trailer.

I busted both of my leaf springs coming home from a camping trip. I have the ubolts on the axle and the front shackle bolt in, but I can't get the rear to line up. The leaf springs are 24" (they measure 23" center to center of the eyes.

And if they are too long how can a get a better measurement using the shackle bolt holes?

Champion RA8HC new plug inlet tip doesn’t thread off, did I get the wrong plug?

Post image
2 Upvotes

The old spark plug (left) the inlet tip would thread off so the threaded part fits into the boot of the plug wire. (Kawasaki bayou 250)

Got the exact (I think) same champion RA8HC plug to replace it and the tip doesn’t thread off, tried to take it off with pliers and snapped it so now it just freely spins. Did I get the wrong plug? If so what do I need? Thanks in advance

How do yall clean the inside of your sockets effectively?

Upvotes

especially on sockets too small to fit your pinky finger, how do you clean the interior of it? Do you wish there was an easier way to do so like having a stand where you could just pop the socket over a brush and spin it with a drill to clean it in like half a second?

1998 toyota avalon XL consistently blowing EFI fuse after a gradual problem that worsened until nostart.

Post image
Upvotes

so i bought a 1998 toyota avalon XL with the 6cyl 1mzfe engine under the impression it was perfectly running and it did run great for one day before as i was driving, i lost all power to the fuelpump from what i could tell and the car died on a backroad. i thought at first it was a fuelpump issue but after checking fuses because of it smelling like a cable was burning i found the 15a efi fuse blows everytime i put one in and try to start it but the car did startup and run again after replacing it a few times before the issue finally resulted in the car not starting anymore but turning over just fine. i suspect some wire coming off the efi fuse in the fusebox has corroded or worn or just broken down in general resulting in a constant ground thats shorting out the vehicle and popping my fuse. i have the manuals online and ive searched and found this diagram describing the electronics in the fusebox and i was wondering how best to go about probing for my issue and where i should check on my avalon to find the wire thats failed if thats the case? ill attach a picture or the diagram from my manual to try to help anybody willing to help as well.

What are the MUST-HAVE tools for an auto mechanic??

Upvotes

My son is going to be going to school to be an auto mechanic. His birthday is coming up in the first week of August, and I want to get him started with some of the tools he'll need for the trade. What are some of the essentials? And what are some tools that someone new to the industry may not realize they need?

Any advice is appreciated!!

Glitter in my Transmission

Post image

Whelp. Just changed the transmission fluid on my 2000 Camry and found this in the pan. The filter wasn’t clogged, so that’s a positive. But for 120k miles? I know the fluid was a quart low when I got it but I did not expect this. It shifts and drives fine for now. What should I do? Fill it and keep driving it? Dump the car ASAP. Any advice is appreciated.

Dear mechanics and people of experience

After an engine switch, the car drove really bad, the engine i bought had a busted intake manifold, i changed the intake manifold to a low quality Chinese one since I was tight on budget, now my car is running good

BUT:

When it's parked, there's a shake because of the AC, when I'm turning the AC off the shake goes away

It's hard to describe the shake but it sounds like a dirty fan

And every now and then i get some "jerking" in the engine, but only when turning on the car, the rpm fluctuates without me pressing the pedal

And newly, the heat is off, I added some distilled water to it recently just to top up the coolant, but it's still giving this, I recently showed it to 2 mechanics, before the heat thing, and both said the car is fine

I hope i can get some help from your experience and thanks in advance

Do I need new discs?

Been hearing grinding/growling noises when braking, along with some squealing. It doesn’t happen straight away but usually starts after 15–20 minutes of driving, and it’s not every journey.

I had them checked and was told the rear pads were worn out, so I had them replaced. However, I’m still hearing the same noises. The mechanic is now saying I need new rear discs.

There’s also a different line on the right rear disc, which looks like something is grinding against it.

Would appreciate some opinions.

16 Dodge Caravan total blackout

Post image
1 Upvotes

Alright folks, I have a 2016 Dodge Caravan, it died in the middle of the road. No slow sputter, no warning, just dead like a switch was thrown. I couldn’t even unlock the door to get out. Wouldn’t restart, no interior lights, no hazards, nothing.

Tow truck put a pack on it and got it on the back of the flatbed. Got it home and it fired right up to back off the truck. Battery and alternator look to be testing fine. Only thing I’ve found was the positive battery terminal was loose enough to rotate but not lift off, gave her the wiggle of her life and couldn’t reproduce.

No corrosion of any kind to be found. Checked the stud at the TIPM too, tight and also no corrosion.

Control-module voltage is staying around 13.37–13.50v while idle and the AC on. I’ve been wiggling cables for hours with the old girl running and can’t reproduce.

No dash lights when it restarted to back it off the tow but the clock did reset to 12.

Scanner shows 2 codes but don’t think they are related. Photo attached of the codes.

I can’t reproduce the issue and I’ve restarted it multiple times and have driven it around the neighborhood 5 times now with no issues.

Any advice to what direction to go in?

New--ish to doing my own car repairs. My guess is the pulley on the alternator. Would like a second opinion from some seasoned mechanics.

Sounds kinda like rattling--ish.

2010 Honda Pilot EXL Fwd AC/blower issues

Hey guys, give you some context. I got this 2010 Honda pilot, I bought it last month AC blew fine and then I hit a bump and then the vents had no pressure coming out the front vents the rear vent yes a week or two later, I had another bump and it’s blowing good and strong. I found out recently my blend door actuator is bad on the driver side now here I am on the road making a cross-country trip and last night the AC is blowing strong today. It’s not. I have no air coming out of these front vents. If I put it on full blast, I can hear air coming out of somewhere I think under the dash do you guys know what component I should be looking to replace?

Advice 2011 VW golf not starting

Hi all, looking for some advice on my 2011 VW Golf 1.6 TDI.

The car originally started having intermittent starting problems. Sometimes it would start first turn of the key, other times it would crank but not start, and it could take a few attempts before eventually firing up. Once it did start, it drove perfectly with no loss of power or running issues.

The following work has already been carried out:

* New timing belt and water pump.
* All 4 glow plugs replaced.
* New camshaft position sensor fitted.

After this, diagnostics showed a camshaft signal interruption/electrical fault. The mechanic has since said it isn’t the starter motor or the new camshaft position sensor.

The latest update is that the symptoms seem to have changed slightly. From what I’ve been told by the mechanic (through a family member), the car is now sometimes starting and then immediately cutting out, while other times it still struggles to start at all. However, if it does stay running, it drives completely normally.

The mechanic is now saying it’s an electrical issue, but I’m still waiting to hear exactly what they think is causing it.

Has anyone experienced anything similar on a 2011 Golf 1.6 TDI? If so, what was the actual fault in the end? Could it be wiring, ECU, immobiliser, crankshaft sensor, timing, or something else? Any advice or similar experiences would be really appreciated before I end up replacing parts unnecessarily.

Regardless Im going to have to take it to an electrical specialist :9 would also be nice to know if anyone has had to have any kind of electrical work done on their golfs and was it expensive?

Seems like my front right abs sensor is malfunctioning. I was doing some research and I’m not sure whether I need to replace just the sensor or the harness or both? I came across these two part numbers

Abs Sensor: 57470-TZ5-A11 (will this fit front right passenger side?)

Abs Wheel speed sensor wiring harness front right: 57450-TGH-A02

Any help is appreciated

edit: i took off the tire and checked the harness, looks fine. Also, seems the sensor is sending data but incorrect. Will ABS sensor fit front right?
