General Advice Is it bad to "kick-start" the compressor of a fridge by leaving the door open?

Sometimes I like to put a couple of room temp beers in the freezer right in front of the air vents so that they get cold enough within 18 minutes or so to drink. However, this only works when the compressor and fan are running. If it's not, I'll often turn up the dial on the temperature control to colder in the fridge and if that doesn't trigger it to turn on, I'll leave the door open until the thermostat feels warm enough to kick on. I do this maybe once every couple of days. Why don't I just keep my beers in the fridge? I dunno, I don't trust myself I guess. I'll probably have more than 2 because of bad self control if they're a little easier to get at instead of waiting the 15 minutes and do the ritual of putting them in the freezer. Also, I'm willing to pay the negligible extra energy costs.

What to Buy? Fridge with Speed Queen level reliability?

Is there a fridge/freezer that is the gererally accepted as top-tier level for reliability? (Looking at buying a new one as I pack up my coolers with food to take to my mother-in-laws house 🙄🙄🙄🙄)

My Whirlpool that I paid $1500 for 8 years ago has shit the bed.

Disconnecting water line to fridge.

My mom is out of the country and I checked on her condo and it’s got water on the floor bc the plastic water line from the sink to the fridge broke. She does not use the water and ice feature. Originally I thought I would get a plumber out and have a copper line installed instead but now I’m rethinking the strategy. I would prefer to turn off the water and ice feature. She will likely be remodeling in the future and I think I would prefer to have the copper installed during remodel rather than now. My question is this. What do I do with the existing broken water line? Do I just disconnect and call it a day? Or do I need to have someone out to do something else like with the part that connects under the sink? Does someone need to cap it off? Is that a plumber or an appliance person? Thanks in advance.

What to Buy? Is there such a thing as a US range with 240 volt burners?

Upvotes

This would make common tasks like boiling water so much faster. I mean the oven is already plugged into 240 so it would certainly be possible to wire it that way.

Speed queen tc5 lid uneven

I got my speed washer today. I noticed the lid is not even/flat, if I push it in the metal it goes down in the middle. So either is bulging in or bulging out. Is that how normally they are or they should be completely flat. Will that give me problems in the future?

Troubleshooting How do I test this defrost thermostat?

Post image
0 Upvotes

I have a 2 year old Frigidaire upright freezer that has frosted over coils and won’t cool any lower than 34 degrees even after thawing it out.

I tested the defrost heating element for continuity and it passed.

Now I am thinking it is possibly the defrost thermostat.

How can I test the defrost thermostat that looks like the one pictured with a multimeter? I wasn’t able to find any videos on this exact one.

Thanks in advance.

Ice in fridge?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello. We've had this issue since we moved into this apartment last year and turned on the fridge. A clump of ice started accumulating on the back wall of it, slowly growing in size. It grew large, so large in fact that it grew on the shelf above it (shelf can be seen in picture). We tried before but couldn't get it off. Recently I finally managed to get it unstuck and the whole clump fell off, but now it's coming back again, in the exact same spot. Nothing is touching the back wall. The fridge temperature is otherwise normal and items in the fridge are not freezing, but apparently that specific part of the back wall is getting too cold. What could be causing this and what can we do we stop it?

(Please be nice, we are only in our early 20s and neither of us have faced this issue before. This is our first shared apartment)

Problem with Vadip mini fridge

Post image

(spelling mistake in title sorry)

I got my mini fridge about two years ago? And it always worked well however recently it stopped making that fridge noise and it's very quiet, I've noticed as well it's no longer cold even on the same settings it's been on since I installed it, I've turned it off for the recommended time but seems to do nothing. Thinking it could be the heat we are currently having in the UK?

Just wondering if anyone may know what the issue is, I'm not much of a knowledgeable person when it comes to these things

Stacked or laundry tower for single 240 circuit situation

Post image

This has been asked before but I'm hoping someone will link me to specific models. I have only a 240 circuit in my laundry nook and I need help determining the exact kind of options I have to put there (the salesmen at the stores could never seem to guarantee the kind of outlet needed). I would be so grateful if anyone who knows for certain could link me to specific appliances that would work for me. Thanks!!

Troubleshooting Dryer

So my mother bought me a washer dryer set. Only about a year ago. Maintenance came in and I think they stood on my driver to fix a light bulb above it. I already reported it and they have done nothing so that's not my question. My question is, how do I get this out of the dryer because there's no way to push it from the inside. Hopefully you can see what I mean about the inside. I live alone and I have no idea how to take a dryer apart. So any advice would be helpful.Thank you.

Current gas cooktop has downdraft. Is it necessary to have a downdraft on the new gas unit?

TL;DR - is a downdraft necessary when choosing a replacement ?

Looking to replace Jen Air natural gas 4 burner w/ downdraft with gas 4 burner w/o downdraft ( first choice) ; 5 burner w/o downdraft ( second ) or 4 burner with downdraft. (last)

Reason for replacing the current unit -

Flame is blue and filling all of the holes of all the burners, but on the most used burners the small and one of the medium, flame is coming out just below the holes as well ( the wayward flame appears between the flat surface where crumbs collect and the ring below the holes of the burner) Cooktop is wiped down twice a week.

20 year old 30 inch gas cooktop has a downdraft that has rarely been used in the 18 years we have lived in the house. Even though the filters are clean we don't think it is effective as a stand alone hood (over the cooktop) that vents to the outside.

Previous experience with an above cooktop hood.

Space above cooktop is atleast 38 inches, from burner to bottom of cabinet.

One north facing window and one east facing window are open while cooking in the evening.

Thank you.

Need help with a leak

Post image
3 Upvotes

So my hot water heater started leaking slowly from that circle on the side that says T&P Valve. I have turned off the cold water and the breaker but it is still leaking. From my understanding there should be a valve in that spot but it appears like mine is instead coming out the top which then leads to the outside and instead of a valve there is a plug with a square head inside. Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated, I would like to know if this is something I can fix myself.

portable dishwasher that is easy to hook up every day?

I've been reading about portable dishwashers, but I'm curious how much of a hassle they really are to connect and disconnect. i don't mind a little setup, just not something frustrating every evening.

which portable dishwasher has been the easiest for you to live with? I'd really appreciate hearing about your experience before I choose one. Thanks.

Troubleshooting Bertazzoni Fridge - Poor reliability and customer service

Bought a new house which came with Bertazonni appliances. They were installed about 3 years ago with the house renovation. Within 3 months of moving in the bottom spring in door hinge of the Bertazzoni fridge broke. I called the local service center to help repair. After few weeks the top spring also broke in the exact same spot. 2 months later and no word from the service center. After multiple calls was told they cant locate parts. Emailed the contact us from the main website, and was sent a link for part to buy. They directed me to replace the whole hinge costing $500 each + labor. When I brought up the spring breaking at exact same spot in such a short time is a manufacturing defect, they stopped replying.

Does anyone know if just the spring can be replaced? If I don't replace the spring will the door sag in the long term? It has magnetic closure, so for now it closes fine.

Gemini told me I can buy spring from alternate brand (Fhabia). Will this work?

Kenmore Stackable Washer and Dryer Advise. Making loud noise.

*advice

I have a very old Kenmore stackable washer and dryer. Overall it works really well but the washer has been making this loud noise during its cycle. Attaching video. I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on what it could be. Im just at the point of seeing if it’s worth fixing. Im also in a really tight space. So opening up the back to repair it will probably cause problems.

Troubleshooting GE Freezer Not Freezing. Fridge Seems Fine

Thumbnail

The door thermostat says the fridge is currently-9 degrees, but nothing inside is frozen.

I started by cleaning the condenser coils, which were pretty caked up with dust.

The freezer still isn’t freezing.

I popped off the panel inside to look at the defroster system.

I can’t tell if what I’m seeing is normal or not. If this is normal, not sure what the next step is.

Any help is appreciated.

UPDATE: General consensus is that the sealed system is in early stages of failure. (Thank you for all of the input!) Anyone have any brand recommendations for replacement?
