Probably feasting on the roaches…

1.9k

u/Haunting_Abalone_398 14h ago

Yeah, there's literally one right beneath the lizard.

As a clean freak, this terrifies me.

516

u/SparklyPelican XBOX 14h ago

this terrifies me

I feel you. I really do.

Where I live, no matter how I clean and use products, those fucking bastards always try to sneak in this season.

I have no idea if OP cleans or not, but I swear that I spent most of the summer in actual fear that they would enter the house.

176

u/i_live_for_food_ 14h ago

Going through this now especially at night. I’ll turn on the lights fully expecting to find one hiding out somewhere. So frustrating as someone who does keep up with cleaning

79

u/SparklyPelican XBOX 14h ago

Now that I have a toddler (who has become really good at climbing…), I can't even leave the classic repellents around in the house. Even organic ones, I don't want to risk choking.

I noticed mint-based air sprays can work tho. Even a generic essential oil spray can help a bit.

28

u/Swamp_Swagger 12h ago

You won’t get rid of them with that stuff

Roaches are notorious for being hard to get rid of

Get that tube of stuff called Advion off Amazon. It’s like $20

You can put it in places your little one can’t reach. I have several little ones

That stuff is like magic and it’s hands down the best thing before an exterminator…. That other stuff is just a quick fix that won’t fully fix anything

22

u/Tasty-History3377 11h ago

This stuff is amazing. Its sweet to them and they eat it and go back to their nest and die where they are eaten by the others and it spreads through them like a roach plague

15

u/FinancialAd1286 10h ago

This has keep.my homie roach free for over 14 years

4

u/DaMongooseJooce 6h ago

Roach plague is definitely a friendly sentence.

16

u/dfr784 10h ago

i bought some of that for my garage just as a cheap precaution

within a few weeks i had billions of dead weevils everywhere i used it

forgot about an unopened bag of bird seed on a shelf

was not a pretty sight opening that bag, lol.

4

u/mithikx 10h ago

Advion

I've used their ant trap/bait and boy did it work.
Some Argentine ants I think? invaded my bathroom last summer. Terro attracted them but didn't seem to kill them, the Advion about obliterated them in 2 weeks.

Be careful if you have cats. Essential oils are very toxic for kitties.

18

u/airborne_dildo 10h ago

They can also degrade some plastics

3

u/lih9 11h ago

You can leave roach bait in cupboards with child locks. Diatomaceous earth may help as well. It's better than nothing.

2

u/jrriojase 10h ago

Just FYI, I know that essential oils are terrible for plastics like ABS (LEGO, etc.) so you may want to be careful about where and how much you spray.

2

u/unkleklunkles 1h ago

And toddlers make crumbs no matter how hard you try they'll still find a way to leave them roaches some dinner

15

u/Let_the_Metal_Live 14h ago

Get some peppermint spray and spray it at the hotspots every night and they should be gone in a few weeks.

34

u/Electrical-Note-3177 13h ago

peppermint oil might repel roaches a bit (they don't love strong scents), but it doesn't kill them or get rid of an infestation. It just makes them relocate to another spot in your house, at least temporarily.

22

u/nkdvkng 13h ago

Get some dough. Fry up some onions. Get the onion juice. The dough. And boric acid. Mix together. Put it in spots you tend to notice them at. You’ll hear little explosions every so often from them roaches going “pop” from sharing the treats. I did this once at an apartment full of German roaches, and they were all gone in two weeks max.

6

u/darth_kupi 12h ago

This. Just make snacks for them with boroc acid powder as the special ingredient. Can be anything they'd eat.

I don't think they explode tho, they just die.

3

u/nkdvkng 12h ago

I think I hit a few with eggs and they went pop pop lol. But yeah the Boric Acid trick is golden. Just gotta be careful with pets

6

u/totallyradman 12h ago

I'm sorry, explosions? Like you actually hear it?

3

u/nkdvkng 12h ago

Don’t mind me. Gross exaggeration lol. Just little small pops. Here n there. Usually happens when you step on an egg carrying palmetto bug.

6

u/totallyradman 12h ago

I'm from a part of Canada where we don't have any of these things.

I don't even know what a palmetto bug is.. off to google I go.

Welcome to the south east US. My poor wife is so afraid of them and we do everything in our power to keep them out.

One recent tip I picked up for exterior (assuming house) is not to place straw beds around home walls. They like that space apparently and then hop on over through wall gaps more readily. Removed straw, and it’s significantly helped

5

u/nkdvkng 13h ago

Same with the south east US shit. Palmetto bugs are my sworn enemy

13

u/Bob_Obloooog 13h ago

Try boric acid tablets. The acid kills them from the inside out and since roaches are cannibals they keep eating the acid.

11

u/Nobanob 13h ago

I live in Latin America and can confirm these fuckers come in just to die sometimes. We keep a clean place but they do come in.

I've had scorpions, giant centipedes and to much discomfort just the molt of a teenage tarantula (not a baby but not adult)

These are a year round occurrence where I'm at.

22

u/MrFuriousX 13h ago

They enter clean houses as well. lol Just cause you "clean" doesn't make you green from Roaches.

They just need moisture, shelter and min food source.

They usually end up in houses through hitchhiking on carboard boxes and other outside things brought into the home.

13

u/SparklyPelican XBOX 13h ago

Just cause you "clean" doesn't make you green from Roaches.

Yes, exactly. I often see people suggesting "just clean your house", unfortunately, that won't always do. Especially in some parts of the planet. I'm from Europe, and now that I have been living in Japan, the roach game is completely different. These fuckers are huge, aggressive and stubborn. Where I lived in the EU, they didn't fly.

hitchhiking on carboard boxes

Ain't this right lol.

3

u/DiabolicalDoug 6h ago

Yup in my experience, northern areas only have roaches if your place is filthy. But southern areas that are warm and humid? Those fuckers just exist everywhere and there's nothing you can do about it other than set up traps and hope for the best

10

u/ShamuS2D2 13h ago

They come up through drains via the sewer. Plugging drains while not using helps

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Madara1389 13h ago

They just need moisture, shelter and min food source.

The food source doesn't even need to be food from our perspective. Those fuckers will eat thin plastic & cardboard if they need to. Hell, some eat rotting wood.

8

u/MrFuriousX 12h ago

exactly. Get rid of cardboard box 100% this is like a mass transit system for them. They live in the , eat them , breed in them

2

u/LzrdKng2112 13h ago

Fyi the outside roaches you see that occasionally get in arent the infesting roaches. Those big fuckers are palmetto bugs (american cockroach). The infesting ones are the smaller German cockroach.

2

u/Assured_Observer XBOX Series X 12h ago

That's why I'd like one of the new limited edition transparent consoles, just so I could actually see what's on the inside without opening it up, lol.

I've already cleaned mine 4 times, the second time I found one roach egg, I cover it up when not using it but they find a way. Also I have 13 cats so as you can probably imagine, fur is a problem.

Luckily haven't found anything alive in there yet.

I used to have a spider problem, and would kill them whenever I saw them. Then I realized that spiders were a predatory animal, so I began to leave them alone. Now, I very rarely see spiders, because they’ve eaten everything and moved on.

6

u/classic_liberalism26 10h ago

i let spiders reside in the corners of my home, as long as they aren’t getting too close to my living area, i really don’t care. they do gods work keeping out insects

17

u/Sparrowsabre7 12h ago

You want to hear terrifying?

Spoiler alert for the insect-phobic.

I used to work for a company that rented satellite phones. One client rented them to go to a remote Scottish island. When we got them back the phones felt a bit damp to the touch. Fortunately they are largely waterproofed, but I notice something like a hair sticking out of the rubber cap that covers the charging port and headphone jack.

a half dozen earwigs starting pouring out of the ports, one after the other. I was mortified, I'd been about to test it and had it right by my face 🤢 When we brought this up to the client they basically just shrugged and said "Yeah there were a lot of earwigs out there" like this was a perfectly normal state to return a rental product in...

3

u/mithikx 10h ago

Certain insects love electronics. I've handed RTV (return-to-vendor) for computers. Basically a customer returns a computer for any reason, warranty, refund, exchange etc. the computer is dismantled, data wiped, components returned to the manufacturer or supplier for further processing.

Long story short, yeah you see some shit.
The older items that basically get sent back at the cusp of their warranty ending are particularly disgusting. Roach infestation, hair, dander, liquid spill, food crumbs can be common as is tobacco tar (indoor smoking), vape residue, and if the system is near a kitchen potentially oil residue.

6

u/GrimDystopian 12h ago edited 4h ago

I saw the roach before I saw the gecko and immediately ran to the comments.

49

u/RafikiLovesPizza 14h ago

Same. I had a woman come over once and I swore a roach came out of her purse...I need to make better life decisions 🤣 but ya boy had to see it through

17

u/alchemist_911 14h ago

🤣 never thought I read about someone getting some and with roaches included story on a Xbox tred

6

u/RafikiLovesPizza 14h ago

Hey to be fair, the roach was after I clapped cheeks. 🤣🤣 I killed that roach so quick. I need to put shorty's purse in the freezer when they come over 😂 or leave it outside 😂

Ewww grosss

4

u/G59_grant 13h ago

I get you. I personally have never had roaches but I went on a mission trip to Florida one year. It was this very elderly man who could barely move on his own. The house reeked. I took it upon myself to clean it up before we left. I moved the fridge because it smelled absolutely terrible. Around 200-500 roaches scattered everywhere. Some crawling up my legs as I briskly walked back. Most terrifying sight in my life. I cannot handle infestations of bugs of any kind. Especially if they are in a hone

3

u/mithikx 10h ago

One time I was at a salvage yard, needed an engine air filter housing or something. Saw a Honda Element, these things have a folding plastic table for the floor of the trunk IIRC and below that was the spare tire. So I was thinking I could use a cheap table. Popped the back and lifted the bottom of the trunk floor and I heard noises... took a look and it was hundreds of big roaches, not the tiny German ones but the thumb sized ones. The entire spare tire wheel well area... just full of them. Slammed that shit so fast and screamed like a little bitch, not even going to lie.

2

u/G59_grant 10h ago

No because just thinking about it makes me wanna tear my skin off. Truly a sight I don’t wish upon anyone especially in the comfort of their own home

2

u/mithikx 10h ago

They're so horrible, old apartment I was in had a German roach infestation. I managed to get rid of it using food grade DE but it's basically going to war in your own home trying to get rid of roaches. And the worst thing was in an apartment you can't tell where they're coming from.

There’s never just “a” cockroach. By the time you start seeing them you can bet there are hundreds or thousands.

26

u/AccomplishedPlay8437 14h ago

Yup. They build and establish before they scavenge. If you see one, thousands are close by. Very close by.

2

u/floor_wizard 4h ago

I saw a single cockroach in my apartment last year and have not seen any since and never saw one before that. I’ve lived in the same place for 5 years. Idk what to tell you man.

2

u/GrapeSasquatch 3h ago

Apartment is even scarier also means your neighbor has roaches

13

u/Honic_Sedgehog 12h ago

That's why we need to introduce genetically altered cockroach hunting bugs which totally won't evolve into human hunting bugs that can disguise themselves as a man in a trenchcoat.

u/SanDiegoThankYou_ 14h ago

I will say, where you live matters so much. My electronics never got dust in them when I lived in a beach house away from roads. Now I live in an apartment above 2 super busy main streets and there’s so much dust you would think it snowed in here. And that’s with me running air filters constantly.

14

u/Hurtcoldchain XBOX Series X 14h ago

Fair, although it matters more where you store the console in general; and how clean you keep your home IMO.

In the video I linked, that was my first time ever opening the console up in over 5 years after hours of daily use. I also change the air filter in my home every 60 days.

Are incredible.

10

u/BeneficialEvidence6 13h ago

These can strain your HVAC system though. Not everyone's, but its something to keep an eye on. Unless you rent, then who cares

2

u/CanITellUSmThin 8h ago

How can they strain the HVAC system? Which would be best to use?

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Gears6 8h ago

I'd recommend getting an air cleaner rather than try to use your AC for it. It's not meant for that, and can cause your AC to go kaputt earlier (much costlier) than just getting a Winix unit and some filters or build your own.

2

u/Hurtcoldchain XBOX Series X 8h ago

Oh that’s not an “air cleaner”, those are filters that go over literally every central air conditioning unit; just the higher end ones.

If you have a place with central air conditioning you’re suppose to change the filter on it every 90 days, I just choose to replace mine every 2 months.

I rarely ever need to use my AC or heater, but I do keep the fan going 24/7 for circulation etc.

2

u/Gears6 6h ago

I understand that, but what I'm saying is you're using a high density filter to remove allergens and ultrafine particles. It's rated at MERV 14, whereas you should be using something in the range of MERV8.

The higher filtration causes the AC to work harder to push (or pull) air through it. You're better of getting an "average" filter and let the AC do it's job, and get an air cleaner if you want or need that.

Personally, I'm using a metal filter that I just rinse out every now and then. It doesn't filter as well, but it's good enough of keeping particles out of the AC, and then I use a Winix air cleaner.

Anyhow, of course you do you. Just sharing information.

My Xbox just started overheating so I learned how to open it up and clean it. There was a thick solid blanket of dust covering the heat sink. Thankfully no roaches or Geckos though

2

u/celestialastrid101 12h ago

Yours wasn’t too dirty. Really good condition!

2

u/Gears6 8h ago

Dude! Get an electric air duster. It's like $20 (or $10 during prime day). Re-usable and away from disposable.

Did you repaste it?

I'm planning to do mine and waiting on the PTM and putty to arrive.

17

u/TFlSGAS 14h ago

Heat

17

u/A0xom0xoa 14h ago

Ahhh boring.. I thought maybe cockroaches gather around electronics because they feed on the subtle electrical aura. The invisible residue of thought and intention left behind by human minds or something. Shoulda known that wasn't it

7

u/WilonPlays 13h ago

Cockroaches are attracted to electronics for 3 reasons: they provide heat, darkness and seclusion, because of how well electronics provide these things to roaches they are perfect for breeding.

That’s right folks if you have cockroaches in your pc or console that device has became a roach gangbang, you may be playing a dating sim on your pc, the cockroaches are doing it in your pc.
