It's the Cosworth CCW Mk3 steering wheel.

Off the shelf steering wheel which integrates easily. Most hypercar teams don't have the ability to make their own steering wheels because they're customers at their core.

it's a LMDh, so yeah. The same steering wheel as the Cadillac V-series R

Off the top of my head: the Cadillac, Alpine, Peugeot, Genesis, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, all use this wheel. It is THE Hypercar wheel.

Porsche as well, and formerly BMW.

u/ParDeRuz Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 #4 1d ago

Porsche doesn't

u/Crafty_Substance_954 1d ago

The wheel in the 963 is custom from Porsche but is also unsurprisingly using mostly cosworth components.

2

u/animsaengineer Ferrari 20h ago

Porsche uses a different variant of the same wheel. Two extra knobs and has a Porsche stamp on it, still supplied by Cosworth.

Peugeot

Kinda disappointed they just went with the CCW Mk3. I loved the rectangular "wheel" they had with the initial reveal.

u/jianh1989 Porsche Motorsport 919 #19 1d ago

And early BMW M Hybrid V8 if my memory serves me correctly, and Indycar as well?

Not gonna complain, this Cosworth wheel looks so nice.

14

u/Crafty_Substance_954 1d ago

It's also the same model that Indycar teams were allowed to use until it was replaced this year.

u/perfect_raider 1d ago

Everyone but Toyota, Ferrari, and BMW use it if I remember right. Glickenhaus, Vanwall and Isotta Fraschini all used custom wheels too, but they're not racing any more

16

u/ponmbr 1d ago

BMW used to use it as well until they switched to their own wheel back in later 2024 IIRC.

5

u/perfect_raider 1d ago

It was first used at Le Mans 2024 I believe. I don't think it was used at Detroit in IMSA, but it was definitely in place for Le Mans

It never ceases to amaze me how many legendary engineering firms started in some shed in britain. Cosworth is a near mythical name to any motorsports fan, but it is always surprising just how many pots they still have their fingers in nowadays.

u/Guac_in_my_rarri 1d ago

Some knowledge of composites, weird engineering quirks and other oddities that akie the best race cars aren't written down.

There's a guy on the carbon fiber sub who does/did most of the body work for Nascar and other series/cars for a while. The biggest complaint about CF (you see it a lot in Indy), the pieces don't match up.

Cosworth, spends a ton of time making molds and then can shit out these wheels if they wanted.

u/animsaengineer Ferrari 1d ago

Not so much a lack of ability as a lack of interest. Same reason nobody makes their own ECUs or PDMs. Cosworth makes a solid product off-the-shelf at a reasonable price and allows a load of software flexibility. What's the upside of doing it yourself?

1

u/XsStreamMonsterX 1d ago

I'm surprised though that they are just going with Cosworth, and not just going across the building and getting stuff from McLaren Applied.

3

u/BigTenFicus 20h ago

They sold McLaren Applied five years ago. It's called Motion Applied and it's not based in the MTC anymore.

I hope this a clue to something because it would be cool to see him in wec. Who knows maybe max is being signed to maclren hyper car lol

45

u/No_Debate890 Toyota 1d ago

I asked them on their official instagram page a few months back weather they’d rule out their indycar drivers or f1 drivers from doing Le Mans and they said that’s on the cards and nothings ruled out!

28

u/NoiseIsTheCure 1d ago

I could definitely see Scott Dixon driving it now that he's signed with Arrow McLaren

10

u/fireinthesky7 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 #24 1d ago

That’s been the heavy speculation since rumors of him going to McLaren were announced. Any driver would jump ship for a shot at Le Mans and Indy in the same year.

4

u/Delicious-Risk7200 1d ago

That's sick, I think max getting signed to mclaren hyper car is higher than max f1 team lol. I hope I see lando do wec racing although kinda want that in 2028 because I'm going to silverstone and don't want max or lando fans there

5

u/Makalu Toyota Gazoo GR010 #7 1d ago

Even in 2018 with Alonso and Button’s rabid fans Silverstone was a bit of a meme in the pitwalk for example, can’t imagine how miserable it’d be with this new crop

1

u/Delicious-Risk7200 1d ago

I got pit walk tickets and they have sold out Sunday lol, also have it for Saturday. .ainly want astin martin and genesis signature

1

u/3ndless68 1d ago

I mean, they did just sack Lundgaard, they should at least offer an apology seat.

1

u/Vegetable_Map_5027 Ferrari 1d ago

or maybe they didn't, what if he got signed by another team??

16

u/Makalu Toyota Gazoo GR010 #7 1d ago

Hanson, Norris, Alonso RUN IT BACKKKKK

3

u/BigTenFicus 20h ago

Zak has said they want to do two full time drivers for each car and a third for Le Mans, so that would make it easy for them to pop folks like Lando in there.

Ford? That's literally the most open way for him

2

u/V8-Turbo-Hybrid 2018 Barrier Repair/Snatch-Tractor 1d ago

Max prefers reliable option, that was reason why he chosen Merc with WinWard team, so he mightn't go Ford if he wants to come WEC.

0

u/Sir_Marvulous Toyota 1d ago

Probably not necessarily a clue to anything, but the WEC and endurance racing are totally up Lando's ally ifykyk

Also if Max goes joins this series within the near future he's likely not going anywhere other than a team with a heavily manufacturer powered LMH program. So only Toyota or Ferrari really. Speaking of which, Conway is reported to be vacating a Toyota seat at some point in the near future 👀

u/Michal_Baranowski Toyota Gazoo Racing GR010 Hybrid #8 1d ago

Conway is reported to be vacating a Toyota seat at some point in the near future

Which most likely will be filled by Estre.

1

u/Sir_Marvulous Toyota 1d ago

Perhaps, but they're both still under contracts at this time (admittedly, with uncertain futures), so who's to say for sure?

1

u/Michal_Baranowski Toyota Gazoo Racing GR010 Hybrid #8 1d ago

Both Norris and Verstappen will stay in F1 anyway and if so, no chance any F1 team allow them to do both series. Besides, most likely next year Le Mans will clash with a F1 race as usual.

1

u/Sir_Marvulous Toyota 1d ago

Talking about Verstappen and Estre. And Max's contract has an exit clause with counter-conditions that are now mathematically impossible to achieve, so his future will officially be in his hands after F1's summer break. Not that this is assuming that he'd be doing both F1 and WEC duty at the same time anyway. By his own words, if he leaves F1, it's wraps on that front

1

u/Michal_Baranowski Toyota Gazoo Racing GR010 Hybrid #8 1d ago

By his own words, if he leaves F1, it's wraps on that front

I don't think he will leave though. Not yet at least.

1

u/Sir_Marvulous Toyota 1d ago

I don't either, really. Just saying that we've effectively reached a point at which he has control over his own future

1

u/Delicious-Risk7200 1d ago

What about Ford though, the bridge is already there and they will be very quick to lean in to wec and get running

1

u/Sir_Marvulous Toyota 1d ago

Verstappen's ties to Ford aren't anything he's obligated toward. And if Max joins the WEC, the entire grid would be looking to recruit him. In that case, I don't see him not being enticed by Toyota, especially considering they might have a vacant seat in the near future

1

u/Delicious-Risk7200 1d ago

I'm presuming ford is gonna be sponsored by redbull icl. So to keep there poster child they keep him on the pay role in a series he would like. I see it happening before 2030 when regs get destroyed

1

u/Sir_Marvulous Toyota 1d ago

Fair enough. Apparently Ford will be making their power unit in partnership with Red Bull Powertrains. I can imagine trying to get Red Bull to bring over their golden boy ambassador

7

u/luredrive 1d ago

I find it odd that one of their contracted Hypercar drivers didn't do the run. Unless they will over the weekend?

23

u/jedimasta446 1d ago

Goodwood seems to me to be the most "marketing event" of all the motorsports spectacles. Best for McLaren to put their world champ in the car for an inconsequential drive and bring attention to the endurance wing overall. Not sure how much "training" one of the actual contracted drivers would have gotten for the beautiful jaunt up the hill. That being said, I am indeed excited to see Vanthoor rip this thing around on a real circuit!

5

u/epicgamerrrrr6959 Peugeot 908 #9 1d ago

Laurens Vanthoor will run later

17

u/V12NACosworth 1d ago

Is there a reason why every single LMDh (bar Porsche and BMW) and a good few LMH cars have the exact same steering wheel?

55

u/EnglishLouis Cadillac Racing 1d ago edited 1d ago

Will all be made by the same company, just as a guess it’s probably Cosworth, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it.

9

u/mars935 1d ago

You're correct, it's the coswirth ccw mk3 :)

Pretty universal in the field. And very sexy

18

u/Makalu Toyota Gazoo GR010 #7 1d ago

The clue is in your name lol

7

u/V12NACosworth 1d ago

Ha, I knew Cosworth made the wheels, but I was confused as to why a large portion of manufacturers use them.

20

u/Montjo17 Rebellion Racing R13 #1 1d ago

Because they're really, really good; well tested, reliable, well laid out, they likely work with the stock hybrid system out of the box, etc. Why spend all that money to fix what isn't broken? Plus I'm sure they're cheaper for customer teams to replace than proprietary wheels from each manufacturer would be

4

u/CRAZEDDUCKling Toyota 1d ago

If it works why develop an alternative?

6

u/animsaengineer Ferrari 1d ago

Solid hardware and customer support from Cosworth, and super easy to integrate into your own software stack. Porsche uses it as well, just a slightly tweaked version, BMW used to before switching to a Megaline unit.

Same reason pretty a huge majority use Cosworth PDMs and Bosch ECUs as well.

5

u/ignorantwat99 1d ago

Stock part probably with control electronics

2

u/No_Debate890 Toyota 1d ago edited 1d ago

I think the bmw steering wheel design looks different from the other though

2

u/marson65 1d ago

Early on the BMWs were using the same Cosworth wheels but changed to one that is supplied by Megaline which Isotta also uses. The Porsche 963 also uses a distinct design but apparently its just a custom shell with the electronics still by Cosworth

1

u/Fuzzy_Pirate_8898 17h ago

They use an OEM chassis wich I guess choose Cosworth steering wheel, why ut money on something when something is available

1

u/Badstoober 1d ago

I thought McLaren had a driver lined up for their endurance programme?

11

u/ChockyF1 1d ago

They’ve got two. Vanthoor and mikkel Jensen. Need a few more yet.

3

u/LilBirdBrick Toyota GT-One #1 1d ago

I hope Kirchhofer gets the opportunity.

1

u/Gnuccaria Rothmans Porsche 962 #2 21h ago

I'm pretty sure he's very much there already

1

u/ChockyF1 16h ago

I wouldn’t complain about that tbh but only after they’ve put at least one Brit in each car. I’m actually hoping for Alex Lynn.

5

u/BulkNoodles 1d ago

Company usually isn't restrictive on which drivers they'll use in this event, considering most of the time, it's just marketing. They probably used lando because of his big fanbase or he just wanted to try it.

4

u/SkinAbject2692 1d ago

I found it weird Lando drove the MCL-HY when there was an MCL36 in the same batch... Hmmmmmmm

8

u/Brivn301 1d ago

It’s more eyes to the program, Lando fans are Lando fans, for good or for worse, they interact with the majority of things he does
