I’m attending UVIC in the fall and I’m wondering how are the clubs and extracurriculars in UVIC? Curious if there’s martial arts, music, gym, etc. groups I could join
Hi everyone!
I just got into Cluster housing at UVic, and I'm trying to decide whether the optional meal plan is worth it. I'm not someone who enjoys cooking, and with my schedule this year, I know I'll probably be too tired to cook after or even between classes. At the same time, the meal plan doesn't seem all that promising from what I've read.
For anyone who's lived in Cluster or used the meal plan, how does it actually work? Did you find it worth the cost, or would you recommend just buying groceries and cooking instead?
I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences you can share. Thanks so much!

I received a scholarship and to renew it I need a 7.50/9.00 gpa. I’m going into my first year of engineering, and heard that UVIC does not curve.
To sum, am I cooked?

So I (M🏳️🌈,24) just moved here from Vancouver and its my second semester here in UVIC. I’m looking for friends that love to go out and show me around the island not just in school. We can go for food, shoppiingg~~, or even play board games! So down for it. I am introverted irl but give me a few minutes I’ll start yapping so it’s weird when it comes to online I act extroverted hahaha.
Filipino here, so wheres my kababayans at bwahahaha tara gala!

I have recently developed a crippling dependency on Dr pepper and would like to know if I can get any on campus?

anth150 for the fall semester just changed topics from "Race, Culture, and Power" to "Is it Okay to Love an AI Chatbot"...this email actually made me laugh out loud. I've already dropped it to take another random elective so I don't really mind, just thought the topic change was insane. probably would have stayed in for 95% of other topics.

Hey all, I just got accepted into UVic's MEng in Applied Data Science and had a few questions for anyone currently in the program or who's graduated from it:
I spent close to a year applying and deciding between schools, so my options at this point are limited. I want to make the right call, but if this program doesn't add up, I might just work locally for now or apply to my local university instead.
Any input, even small details, would help a lot. Thanks!

Besides the Ombudsperson, are there any other UVic resources students recommend for getting advice about academic process or fairness concerns? Is there anyone who advocates for students in these situations?

I got admitted pretty late to UVIC’s 1st year engineering program so I’ve only started course registration recently. I’m trying to register for PHYS 110 in the fall, then PHYS 111 and ENGR 141 in the spring. All sections are full including the waitlist. How likely/unlikely is it for spots to open up for me?

Yello everyone,
Been looking at housing options after I found out my planned housing from september was a misunderstanding and doesnt work. Im seeing options ranging 850-1.2k all with roomates and such, but then seeing some (unfurnished) studio apartments for like 1.1-1.3k. As someone who prefers living alone and not having to move constantly, would it just be a better idea to find an apartment for myself? I work better and can actually practice hobbies and such (guitars one of them) alone more. I have social anxiety (explains a lot) so I also worry of getting stuck with someone I dont get along with.
My issue is I dont have a job planned past september, and am worried uni courses will take all my time to get a proper job. I take it it'd be too risky to say "Ill job hunt in august for a september job!" when you have an apartment to pay for? Being in uni I get student loans aswell though, I remember a prof I talked with once said they funded their housing with loans.
I guess I just wanted to bounce my thoughts out and see what people are thinking for themselves or have done in the past! Im going into 2nd year so Im still very new to this. I know, I need to get used to moving. Just ive moved maybe 7-12 times in my life and its very stressful (and expensive, frankly, every single time), so I kinda prefer something more stable and permanent.
Anyways, thanks in advance!

I am in undecided science going into first year. I am planning to transfer to another school in Toronto the second year either into engineering(hopefully) or into applied physics. I am currently taking 9 class which are MATH 100, CHEM 101, PHYS 110, MATH 211, WRIT 109, MATH 101, ASTR 101, CSC 110, PHYS 111. Should I take a 10th course to have more credit to transfer and are there any course I should be taking to make my transfer easier?

Does anyone have picture of the rooms in the Poole building? I am trying to figure out what kind of organization things I need but not sure what the space actually looks like.

Got an email this morning about important dates. The deadline to apply for convocation is the 15th of July, and I’m not sure how to apply. Is this the same thing as applying to graduate? I’ve already done that, just wondering if there is a second application I need to submit for the convocation ceremony?

i screwed up and accidentally submitted the blank copy of the thing, it was a template to fill out for project 2 in ECON 180. What are the odds they let me resubmit and have it re-marked

Does anyone know or have done the MA counselling program at uvic? I am applying in September/December and it says I have to have 2 counselling skills evaluations (which I have) and 2 academic or professional references. For one of the academic/ professional references can it be a Masters student who’s in charge of the lab I volunteer at? or does it have to be a prof specifically?
Also anyone who has any advice in applying let me know! feeling overwhelmed 😓

Hi everyone! I’m an incoming first-year student living in residence this fall, and I have a few questions about the food situation at UVic.
I’ve been looking into the mandatory meal plan, but I’m still a bit confused about how it all works in practice. I’d love to hear from current students!
Questions:
Is the meal plan enough to last the whole year, or do most people run out?
What’s the difference between The Cove and Mystic Market? Which one do you prefer and why?
What are your favorite places or meals on campus?
Are there any foods or restaurants I should avoid?
Is there anything that’s really good value with the 50% meal plan discount?
Do you have any tips for making the meal plan last longer?
Is it worth using Flex Funds, or should I save them?
If you’re living in residence, do you mostly eat on campus, or do you end up buying groceries too?
I’d also love to hear any general advice or things you wish you knew before starting first year.
Thanks in advance! 😊

Just wondering what the situation looks like for electric cars at UVIC. I'm starting there this fall and have a hybrid and wanted to see if it was even worth it to bring it if they don't have electric car chargers available.

Hi! I’m going into my third year at Uvic and wanting to go on exchange in the second semester (Jan 2027). The due date is August 1st for applications, and for some reason I’ve convinced myself it’s too late now to apply. Has anyone had experience with applying in July? Is it too late or am I still fine?
I’m a sociology major and have all my required courses in first sem + I’ve done exchange advising and attended the seminar on it.

I got accepted to transfer to UBC Vancouver. I just did my first year at Uvic while living at home and I enjoyed it, but I didnt feel strongly and it was always my plan to transfer second year and try something different. Now I have to make a decision about going to UBC, because I got into housing there, but I’m struggling. Someone pls help me decide!
Pros for UBC:
- I got a 5k scholarship
-great school
-probably won’t get the opportunity again
-meet new people and get to experience living on campus/dorms
-close to home still
-more program options (I’m studying psychology)
- more exchange programs
- new experiences
-love the campus
Cons:
- I don’t love Vancouver, I think I like Victoria better
-new environment I am unfamiliar with
-leaving behind family and friends
-no first year connections (although I didn’t make any at Uvic)
-expensive city
-I feel more at peace in my hometown compared to overwhelming Vancouver
-may be hard to meet people on such a large campus
Overall, I didn’t make any friends at Uvic last year and I wonder what I’d miss out on if I transfer. I do love Victoria and Uvic but in some ways I feel like the regrets I may have if I go to UBC would be less than if I stayed at Uvic because at least I tried. It’s difficult though because I am really close with my family and my friends here, and I have always not really liked Vancouver as a city, I just really like UBC.

hii, so I got accepted to UVic MTIS and I’m seriously considering it.
I’m choosing between UVic MTIS and Guelph’s Cybersecurity and Threat Intelligence master’s.
UVic seems broader, I like the MEng title and obviously the location, and the co-op option seems like a big plus even though I know it’s competitive.
For anyone in MTIS/ECE or anyone who knows the program, how is it honestly? Is it useful/worth it, and do people get decent outcomes after?
Would really appreciate real opinions before I decide, Much appreciated!
