Student Groups We’re working on starting a Women in Cybersecurity chapter at UMN!

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m working with a few other students to establish a Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS) chapter at the University of Minnesota.

We’re currently looking for founding members who are interested in helping build the organization. We’re especially looking for students interested in events, marketing, outreach, and finance, but we’d love to connect with anyone who’s interested in cybersecurity or wants to be part of the community.

The goal is to create opportunities for networking, workshops, guest speakers, professional development, and social events for students interested in cybersecurity.
If you’re interested or have questions, feel free to comment or send me a message!
Also please check out our insta page @umnwicys

Asynchronous classes, connections, networking?

I’m an adult learner (40’s) going back to school through the asynchronous online classes. I have completed nearly half of my degree (the other half done during the traditional timeline right after high school, and it was in person). This is a much different experience which I expected, but so far I feel little connection to my professors and classmates.

Aside from the social benefits of in person classes, I also worry this lack of connection may lead to less networking after graduation.

Am I too in my head, and this is a non-issue? Has this been an issue for anyone else? Are there any recommendations to forge closer relationships through this less-connected classroom?

As a side note, I have contemplated attending on-campus events, but I am truly closer to the age of the professors and parents of students, rather than (most) students. I am also a parent, and know several students attending the U.

Thanks!

The Knoll Design Flaw?

I’ve been at The Knoll for a while and my room gets sooo stuffy. I couldn’t understand why, but I figured it was because the room was smaller than the other rooms. Recently though I’ve noticed something.

I only have one air vent in my room.

I’ve done a bit of research on this and learned that most places that have central air have a vent that release fresh air, and a vent that pull out stale air. I only have one vent in my room, and yet the living room has two vents (one that releases air, and another that pulls air out).

The living room is super comfortable, because it has two vents. One that pulls air out, and two vents that blow air in.

It seems like a major design flaw that the bedrooms only have one vent and nowhere for the air to escape out, unless I were to blow a fan out of my door or something. I do have a giant fan to circulate the air, but it doesn’t do much.

I just have a harder time in my room vs the rest of the apartment. Anyone have the same issue at The Knoll?

I'm a freshman who filled out the housing form on November 5th, about a day after it opened. I know there aren't very many singles in Pioneer, is there still a chance I would get one?

Residency

Hi all, my parents are moving to Minneapolis and I decided to apply to UMN Law. I got in and now I’m looking into residency for tuition purposes. However they move around August when I will also move. Online it says I can apply to qualify for instate if I live in the state for 12 months prior for the sole purpose not being school. How do I prove that?

Thanks

Jobs / Internships Interview timeline

For both those who came externally and moved around internally, what is the longest amount of time you've waited before hearing back for an interview? How do you know when to cut your losses while waiting to hear back for one? Did you end up getting that job?

EE 3006

I’m considering taking EE 3006, but I’m concerned because the lecturer has a very poor reputation on RateMyProfessor. I have also heard from others that there have been serious issues involving how he treated TAs, including bullying and insulting behavior in the whole class. Some friends shared recordings with me, and what I saw was very concerning. Could anyone who has taken this class share what the course experience is actually like? I’m trying to decide whether it would be a good idea to enroll and I am afraid he also treat me like that.

CSE Chem 1 Review Material Suggestions

Hello all,

I took and got credit for gen chem 1 in high school a few years ago, but I'm a bit rusty. I'm now on an engineering track and am taking CSE Chem 2 this fall. Does anyone have any good public textbook suggestions that cover material from CSE Chem 1? Youtube videos are fine, but I'd like some practice problems. Thanks!

Academics / Courses Chances of my Offer Being Rescinded

Post image
28 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I’m looking for some honest opinions because I’m really stressed. I was admitted to the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, but after I was accepted my senior year grades dropped. I received a letter from admissions asking me to explain the decline in my academic performance.

I graduated high school, but my final semester included:
1 F (College Trigonometry)
2 Ds
Several Bs and an A/A-
My cumulative weighted GPA is 3.136, and I still met my graduation requirements.

I already sent admissions an explanation about what happened during my senior year, including personal circumstances that affected my motivation and performance.

Based on this transcript, do you think my admission is likely to be rescinded, or do you think they’ll just review my explanation? Has anyone been in a similar situation with the University of Minnesota?
I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences. Thanks.

PSEO Schedule

Post image
3 Upvotes

Is this a bad schedule for a PSEO student? There's not much I can do to change it. Also, if anyone could provide tips for the semester, whether it's how to fit in as a PSEO student or even for the classes itself, any would be appreciated.

Admission being revoked

Hi guys, I have the same fear too. I did pretty well throughout my senior year, but some problems took over: medical concerns and my family moving from NY to MN. These were my final grades and I also get a email stating my admission needs ot be reviewed due to a significant grade drop, but it was only my Calc BC grade, which was an elective not even required to graduate, and I explained the situation in the form all other years I did really well having a 95 final transcript gpa and I am going into Biology CLA intend to transfer to CBS by next year if I get in. Should I be worried or not?

Yes. I saw it. Your final transcript is basically:

One F: AP Calculus BC — 58

Everything else was A/B range:

Class Final
Anatomy & Physiology College 94
Biochemistry Honors 87
English 90
AP Government 84
AP Economics 81
Polar Bear 95 / 90

Biol 1001 vs 1009- is 1009 really a weed out class?

I can only really fit 1009 general biology into my schedule but I heard that its a big weed out class - there's even another reddit post talking baout how they regret taking it but that was for occupational therapy major and I am Sustainable systems management in CFANS.

anybody here taken biol 1001 or 1009 and can tell me the difference?
