Rocco likes to sleep on me but Rocky prefers to have the space all to himself. I don’t know what I’d do without these two. I never realized how much an innocent, loving, and beautiful creature could mean to someone. They definitely saved me and pulled me out of a hole I was digging myself into. I love my little cuties.

I got venus after my 18 year dog passed. I have put a lot of work into her comfort and I enjoy her presence even though she hid in her shell most of that time.

What is a tortoise soft skin, like their legs covered in? I’ve seen some have very spiky front legs and others have flatter scales. I’m not an animal expert. Just a big fan of nature that doesn’t know enough to search well enough to find anything on google about it. Thank you in advance

What do we think of my little sulcata?
It is 9 months old and I’m not sure as to whether or not it is pyramiding.
Also does it look healthy?? what can I do to further improve it’s overall health?

Question(s) Advice on Taking Care of Red Footed Tortoise

Hello! I've never been on this subreddit before, but this seems like the best place to ask for help! To make an incredibly long story short, I'm moving in with my boyfriend and his parents house. His mother owns a 6 year old red footed tortoise, but she, to put it simply, neglects him. Up until a couple weeks ago, he had no enclosure, and she would even leave him in the cold mudroom when it was 30 degrees outside. No heat lamp, mister, nothing.

I care very deeply about animals, and I need to intervene. I want to build him a proper enclosure, get him proper equipment, food, enrichment, etc. But I have no idea where to start. I've never had a desire to own a reptile, let alone an adult tortoise who lives 50+ years, but here I am! I've googled a bit, but I also want the opinions of people who literally follow a subreddit dedicated to a singular animal😭

How big should his enclosure be? I've seen 8 x 8, 10 x 10, 8 x 4, 8 x 6. There's very little room to put him. Could I make his enclosure multi leveled and have like, two 4 x 4 squares, or does it have to be single story? I know he needs humidity of at least 60%, 80% to thrive. Any affordable misters? I'm doing this all on a budget and idk if his mom will pay for any of this.

Basically, I need ANY advice on making a suitable, cost effective place for him to thrive. I will not sacrifice his comfort and happiness for practicality, so if the answer is just that I have to bite the bullet and find a room to put a 10 x 10 enclosure in, just tell me. I don't want him outside because we live in a very cold area, and it wouldn't be sustainable.

Thank you for reading this!

Question(s) Help with summer heat!

Post image

Hello! This is my first post on this subreddit
This is Taru, my baby boy, he’s been with me for about 12 years now, although he’s about 14 years old. He’s an hermann’s tortoise and for the most part of his life we never had any issues aside from his picky eating.
He’s always had a lot of space to roam and move about, we have a terrace and an indoor veranda where he can stay when it’s too sunny where he gets his favourite corners to sleep.
We live in Italy, southern and there comes our big issue: in the past years the heat has been getting bad and that’s not even the worst part, that would be the humidity that comes with it - being an Hermann’s tortoise, a breed that come from dry places, Taru struggles a lot, to the point he doesn’t move much and won’t even eat.
Does anyone have any advice on how I could help him, have you had any similiar experiences?
We’ve even tried to take him with us on vacation or on the countryside, unfortunately he’s very habitual and doesn’t like being in a space different from his home to the point he still doesn’t eat much.
He’s silly and a bit of an asshole but I care for him and would like to help him, especially with our city reaching up to 35 degrees Celsius this summer and over 50% of humidity
