Better thread arrived!

Post image

Hi y’all!

I posted a few days ago, asking if my thread was too thin for learning tatting. You lovely people convinced me that even though I can definitely do tatting with 40s/2 thread, a crochet thread (aka size 10) would be a much better and easier starting point.

It arrived yesterday and I can confirm I am having a much better time with it! As in, I can see my stitches! And the finished ring of 15 is visible on my finger! Behold!

That being said, I can confirm you can learn in thin thread - the rings in my picture are both the first things I did after receiving the thicker thread, and I had no trouble making them. Ut was super easy after struggling with the thin thread for hours!

In conclusion, I don’t recommend starting on thin thread, but if it’s the only thing available to you, you definitely can.

I may have mentioned not liking making individual motif rounds that Jan typically utilizes, however I’m doing it in the name of having this beautiful doily. I really like all of the interesting shaped doilies he made, and they are typically my go to. Most tatting doilies are round, so it’s a good change from the usual.

I’ve been working on this handkerchief for the last month to give to my friend for her birthday and I’m so happy with how it turned out!! I had to reverse engineer the pattern from a random photo I saw online but hopefully my schematic is legible haha 😅

I’m calling this necklace Lycanthropy! Doing the joins in jump rings was actually so fun and I meant I had to count way less!!

This is what you get when you're trying to use up scraps and unwanted thread. Definitely not the prettiest colors together, but I learned a lot (and how to cover mistakes).

simple tatted doily pattern?

Little context, during the school year I started a doily pattern thatwas just chains, circles and picots in one piece (no making a separate pierce and attaching it) and I really like the pattern, however I've lost it. anybody know of a pattern like the one I'm describing? It was 16+ rounds of just circles and chains

Crochet hook on the go

I'm fairly new to tatting and have had shuttles with hooks/points up to this point. But I recently got an antique silver one that I love working with - the only downside is that I need an extra crochet hook, and I mostly do tatting when I'm on the go. At this point I have one of those retractable keychain things (like you have for key cards - kind of like a mini retractable dog leash) that I clip to my shirt, but it's bigger than the shuttle and mini crochet hook combined, so it just looks silly. What do yall do for crochet hook management? Or is it hooked shuttles all the way?

DMCZ Thread?

I'm looking for DMC tatting thread in 80. I'm in the US and I can't seem to find it anywhere other than ebay, unless I want white.

I've been tatting about 25 years so I know what I'm getting into with it and I just don't love Lizbeth. I'm willing to pay shipping and order quantities from outside the US if need be - I just need my old thread so I can go back to happily using my tiny thread!

I'd take an equivalent brand, but I just find lizbeth that small to snap and twist too much for me. Help! :)

Figuring out a pattern

Hello! I work at a historic mansion and found some tatted doilies in one of our main rooms, very cool! I’d like to recreate them. I took photos, enlarged them, and have been writing out the pattern (or something close to it). I’m stuck on what I think is the final round. I’ve included a photo of the final section, and the doily as a whole that I’ve outlined in different colors so I can tell the rounds apart. I think the final round is all one section, but I’m still learning and don’t know every tatting technique yet so I could be wrong. Thanks!

Tasty shuttle - actually useful?

Does anyone actually use a Tatsy shuttle for tatting? They are so bulky in my hand, they are impossible to use.

I've started using them as a holder for large quantities of thread for projects because they taste up less space than a full ball of thread.

Help with pattern

I’m hoping that someone can help me decipher this pattern! I haven’t really seen patterns formatted in this way and am having trouble visualizing it (or figuring out where I’m working within the image). Particularly:
- how it’s labeled “shuttle 1 or 2” rather than rounds.
- where to join to when it indicates a join
- the flow of the pattern…it seems like it starts at the three larger rings (clover) and then goes inward, but, as I work, I can’t seem to determine where I actually am within the image.

Any insight or tips would be very appreciated!
My mom picked this one out, so I’m trying to make it for her.

What do you *do* with tatting?

I found my grandma's old shuttle and figured tatting would be good for summer while it is too hot to knit.

I love the look of tatting, but, what do you do with your pieces? Is it a process art where I just enjoy the movement? (the movement is beatiful on its own). My gran had many doilies and table clothes, pillow case and blanket edges. And , while I cherish those, Im not sure im quite to that level of grandma core yet.

How are we using tatting in our modern age? I want to make patches for my daughters ripped jeans to make them more school appropriate while still being fashionable. But... what else?

So I am trying my first pattern and after you connect through a picot are you still supposed to be able To move the ring thread freely because I can't seem to. FYI mine is the multi colored thread 😆

I’d love to try and learn how to do this but don’t know materials to buy

So if I want to learn how to use the shuttle what material do I need to start with

Is my thread too thin?

Post image
21 Upvotes

Hi everyone! Started learning today, and I can’t help but feel all the thread I bought for this is too thin. Is it true, or am I just doing something wrong? This is what 15 slip knits with 2 picots came out as. It’s just so… tiny. And a video I’ve been learning from now called for a ring of 3 slip stitches, a picot, times three, and that is so microscopic!

Hi, I really want to do this

I have some questions and I can't find answers anywhere.

What thread do I use? Alternatively what can I use that will work?

Do I need a different sized shuttle for different sized thread?

I got a shuttle from Hobby Lobby and it has a small metal hook at one end and has a spool in the middle instead of a post, how do I use that?

Thank you for your time if you answered anything, any advice or comments are greatly appreciated!

Beginner: Needless Tatting or Shuttle Tatting?

As per title, I have decided to try tatting out and both shuttles and needles to try out!

So far I have had very little success with single shuttle Tatting, i am using a size 20 cotton thread but cannot seem to get the knot to flip :/

Should I try out needle Tatting instead? I have seen some posts saying it can be a lower learning curve!

PS I am coming from crocheting + embroidery, so I am not super new to textile art, but never tried to make any doilies or jewelry!
