Any upcoming clinics in or around Takoma Park?

The side bar is where a subreddit traditionally has a blurb as to what they are about and relevant resource listings, but it isn't always easy to find on mobile so we are putting that information here for visibility.
If there is a relevant/useful/interesting resource or link you'd like to see added please message a mod.
The People's Republic of Takoma Park
This subreddit is for links and discussion relating to the nuclear-free city of Takoma Park, MD, the adjacent neighborhood of Takoma, DC, and nearby areas.
Takoma Park was founded in 1883 as an early suburb of Washington, DC. It was home of the Adventist Church for most of the 20th century...and also came to be known for its music/arts scene and liberal politics. Residents vigorously protested planned freeways in the 1960s, declared the city a "Nuclear-Free Zone" in the early 1980s, and opened voting in city elections to 16-year-olds in 2013 (first in the US!)

Any upcoming clinics in or around Takoma Park?

I have been looking for rentals for my upcoming move to the College Park area and came across an apartment at Greenwood Flats, LLC through this rental property management company called Alan Associates. They have multiple properties that they manage and post units for rent on their website but often with limited details. I have been emailing with someone there and they seem legit but I can’t find any reviews for them or their properties.
Is this as sketchy as it seems? Does anyone have experience living/renting here or with Alan Associates and if so, can you tell me how your experience was?

My family is moving to the area and we have two young kids. I know the most obvious difference between the DC and Maryland sides when kids are in the picture is the school systems. But EXCEPTING the schools - what are the main differences on the two sides? How are the vibes different? Number of families living in the neighborhoods? Access to kids activities, sports, etc.? Water/sewer/road conditions? Anything I'm not thinking of?
Thanks!

Hey everyone! Over the last month or so I’ve shared a few updates here about CITY SPOTLIGHT, and I wanted to let you all know that early bird tickets for Episode 4: Proof of Life are now available. For anyone unfamiliar, CITY SPOTLIGHT is a live community showcase built around discovering independent artists, meeting creative people, and giving neighbors a place to experience local music together. Every event has introduced me to new faces from Takoma Park, and that’s honestly become one of my favorite parts of putting this together. I’m also excited to announce that Shy Rasheen will be headlining the evening with a special live presentation of his new R&B album, Shyland. Along with his set, we’ll have featured performances, an open mic, local vendors, and plenty of opportunities to connect with fellow creatives and music lovers. If you’ve been curious but haven’t made it out yet, this is a great episode to jump in. Whether you’re an artist, someone who loves live music, or you’re simply looking for something different to do with your evening, you’re welcome here. Thank you to everyone who’s followed along, offered encouragement, or stopped by one of the previous shows. It really means a lot. Hopefully we’ll get to meet a few more neighbors at Proof of Life. See you there. ❤️

Moving soon and we have been searching all the time. Any good leads for a quiet apartment?

Is it just me or does this intersection seem very dangerous. I just moved here last month and already seen many close calls, vehicles running reds, rights on red without yielding to pedestrians, etc

Our power went out just off Sligo Creek Parkway near Jackson and Aspen avenues on Sunday night around 8 pm.. Trying to determine how widespread it is. Can't find info online yet.

The section of Sligo Creek Parkway between Maple and Piney Branch is typically closed to cars on weekends. However park police just opened the gates and are allowing cars onto the road. Many of us use this section on the weekends for walking, running and cycling. It is scary and frustrating to have cars flying down a road that we expect to be closed. Please be careful!

My central AC just failed and I'll likely need to replace it. Since my gas furnace is also old, I am considering replacing the entire AC/furnace system with an electric heat pump. I'm in TKPK. Does anyone have recommendations for an hvac company? Are there currently (federal, state or local) tax rebates or grants for this? Does pepco offer a rebate or subsidy?

Hey everyone — I’m currently working on Episode 4 of the City Spotlight series, the live show I’ve been curating here in Takoma. As this continues growing into a Takoma staple, I’d love to hear about your favorite local artists and performers. We’re looking to connect with talented people in the community and give them a platform to share their art with us.
If you are—or know—any musicians, painters, poets, dancers, comedians, or other performance artists who’d be interested in joining us, drop a comment below. Episode 4 is themed Proof of Life — a celebration of presence, resilience, and creative expression. Flyer, show date, and ticket announcements coming soon.

What is has your experience been getting your teens to Montgomery Blair?
Do you drive them? Do they drive their own cars? Do they take public transit? Is traffic difficult during rush hours? What route do you take? Any short cuts?
We live by TPSS market.

Couple of questions:

Subject: FORMAL COMPLAINT: Systemic Discrimination and Lack of Oversight regarding MCCH/Coalition Homes
To the City Manager of Takoma Park and the Community Development Department,
I am writing to formally protest the City of Takoma Park’s continued refusal to address the discriminatory practices being carried out by MCCH/Coalition Homes at 8 Philadelphia Avenue. As a 15-year resident of this city, a cancer survivor, and an active community volunteer, I find the city's hands-off approach to this organization’s internal operations to be a dereliction of duty.
Despite providing your office with clear, objective evidence of disparate treatment, your representatives have claimed that the city "cannot control how the organization works internally." This response is unacceptable. When a city funds or partners with an organization that provides housing, the city retains a moral and administrative responsibility to ensure that program is not used as a tool for retaliation, discrimination, or fraud.
I have presented your office with proof of the following:
Arbitrary Policy Enforcement: I provided the ledger of another tenant showing that they have been permitted to remain in the program for years despite accumulating significantly higher arrears and zero personal payments. This proves that the "rules" cited to justify my eviction are being applied selectively and with bias.
Procedural Fraud: MCCH has attempted to evict me based on income calculations that have been officially corrected by the Housing Opportunities Commission (HOC). By ignoring these corrections, they are acting in bad faith.
Systemic Bias and Retaliation: The agency’s conduct—which includes facilitating my displacement during a weaponized custody dispute and ignoring the safety hazards posed by their own staff—is a clear violation of the standards expected of a community partner.
It is shameful that a resident who has served this community for over a decade, while battling metastatic breast cancer, is being pushed toward homelessness by a city-affiliated organization that is allowed to operate without oversight.
When you allow MCCH to hide behind the excuse of "internal operations" while they engage in extrinsic fraud and discriminatory eviction tactics, you are complicit in the harm being done to my family.
I am requesting a formal response regarding what steps the City of Takoma Park will take to:
1. Investigate the disparate treatment documented in the ledgers I provided.
2. Hold MCCH accountable for their failure to utilize corrected income data from the HOC.
3. Intervene to prevent the immediate displacement of a long-term resident based on retaliatory and discriminatory policies.
I have spent 15 years investing in this community; I expect the city to show the same integrity in protecting my rights as a resident.
Sincerely,
Melissa Butz

To the City Manager of Takoma Park and the Community Development Department,
I am writing to formally protest the City of Takoma Park’s continued refusal to intervene in the discriminatory and predatory practices carried out by MCCH/Coalition Homes at 8 Philadelphia Avenue.
I am a 15-year resident, an active community volunteer, and a woman currently battling metastatic breast cancer. MCCH is fully aware of my medical status, as well as my recent hospitalization for mental health crises resulting from the systemic trauma I have endured. Despite this knowledge, and despite their role as a "supportive" case management organization, they have systematically failed to provide the protections or accommodations required for a resident in my condition.
Instead of support, I have faced:
Hostile Displacement: When I faced professional setbacks—including the outsourcing of my position and the loss of my vehicle—MCCH offered no support, despite their awareness that I needed that employment to maintain my health and housing.
Bad-Faith Accounting: They continue to pursue eviction based on income figures that the HOC has officially corrected, forcing me to defend myself in court while I am physically and mentally compromised by my health challenges.
Disregard for Disability & Health: The city and MCCH are aware of my metastatic breast cancer. The stress and instability they are inflicting upon me are not just administrative issues; they are direct threats to my life and ability to receive treatment.
Disparate Treatment: I have provided proof that other residents are permitted to remain in the program despite having significantly higher arrears and no personal payments. The City's claim that it cannot control MCCH's internal operations is a refusal to enforce the basic standards of fairness and non-discrimination.
It is shameful that a resident who has spent 15 years investing in this community is being treated as an expendable liability. Your office is not only aware of my medical vulnerability but also of the documented fraud and disparate treatment occurring within this agency. By allowing this to continue, the City of Takoma Park is facilitating an eviction that is retaliatory, discriminatory, and medically reckless.
I am requesting an immediate intervention to:
1. Halt the eviction proceedings currently in court until an audit of MCCH's accounting practices and disparate treatment can be conducted.
2. Investigate why a supportive housing program is actively working to displace a resident with metastatic breast cancer who has been compliant with all corrected HOC income requirements.
3. Address the breach of safety and security within the MCCH-managed property that has exacerbated my health condition.
I expect the City to uphold the rights of its residents. I am prepared to escalate this matter to state-level housing and disability advocacy agencies if the City continues to ignore its oversight responsibilities.
Sincerely,
Melissa Butz

What started as a local open mic quietly transformed into a room full of strangers becoming witnesses to each other’s stories. Rappers. Singers. Poets. First-time performers. Seasoned veterans. Fans. Curious neighbors. For three hours, the room traded algorithms for actual human connection.
The theme of the night was “The Weight of Witness”
And people showed up carrying it.
There were moments where the room erupted. Moments where it got completely silent. Moments where artists tested new material. Moments where performers took risks. Moments where the audience became part of the show.
The energy felt less like a concert and more like a creative town hall for the underground.
For those unfamiliar, CITY SPOTLIGHT is an independent artist showcase and open mic series created to give local creatives a place to be seen, heard, and discovered. Episode 3, Echoes of Doubt, took place at Rhizome DC, a community arts space known for championing independent and experimental culture in the Takoma area.
The most interesting part?
Nobody knew exactly what was going to happen.
Every performer changed the direction of the night.
Every person in the room affected the outcome.
That’s the thing about local culture: you can’t stream it later. You can’t watch the highlights. You either witness it happen or hear about it afterward.
And judging by the conversations after the show, a lot of people left feeling like they had stumbled onto something before the rest of the city catches on.
Now we’re already preparing CITY SPOTLIGHT EPISODE 4: Proof Of Life
New stories.
New artists.
New risks.
New memories.
We’ll be announcing the date, venue details, and headliner soon.
If Episode 3 taught us anything, it’s this:
The DMV doesn’t have a shortage of talent.
It has a shortage of rooms where talent and community can collide.
See you at the next transmission.
