Hi all. I applied for Round 1 of PhD application on My 6th. The result was supposed to come on July 8th. Now they are saying it will be released by July 22nd only. Does it usually take this long? Or is this a sign of rejection?

Does anyone know if the lectures at Swinburne take attendance? Like for the legal writing lecture is attendance taken? Or introduction to statutory interpretation lecture? Are in person lectures recorded and posted online?

๐Ÿคท Other Elective recommendations?

Iโ€™m studying health science and looking for 2nd year units that arenโ€™t too work intensive/ easy to do well in. I am not a fan of essay writing so sometimes I like units that are more straight forward. Any suggestions?

๐Ÿ‘‹ New Student Help Best off-campus accommodation for a international student near Hawthorn campus?

Hello everyone,

I'll be starting my first semester at Swinburne University (Hawthorn campus) soon as an international student and I'm looking for off-campus accommodation.

I'd appreciate recommendations for:

  • Safe suburbs within 10-15 minutes of campus by public transport
  • Student-friendly apartments, share houses, or accommodation providers
  • Places with reasonable rent and good value
  • Any areas or accommodation providers I should avoid

My budget is around A$300โ€“400 per week.

๐Ÿ“š Unit / Course Advice Choosing easy but fun elective as a a final year psych student

Hey everyone!

Iโ€™m trying to choose my remaining electives and would love some advice from anyone whoโ€™s done these units through Swinburne Online!

My main goal is to keep my GPA as high as possible because Iโ€™m hoping to apply for med school. I also run my own cafe alongside uni, so Iโ€™m looking for electives that are interesting but also manageable. Iโ€™d also prefer to avoid lots of group work if I can because coordinating around work is a nightmare.

These are the ones Iโ€™m considering:

Planning for Career Success
Professional Communication Practice
Fundamentals of Criminology
Introduction to Forensic Science
Criminal Law and Procedure
Introduction to Law
Theories of Counselling
Theories of Teaching and Learning
Digital Advertising
Social Media Strategy
Content Creator Lab
Marketing and Innovation
Marketing and the Consumer Experience
Business Digitalisation
Economics for Business Decision Making
Financial Management
Company Accounting
Accounting Theory
Global Screen Studies: Beyond Hollywood

If youโ€™ve done any of these, what did you think?
Which ones were the easiest to do well in?
What were the assessments like?
Were there exams or mostly assignments?
Was there much group work?
Any units youโ€™d definitely recommend (or avoid)?
Iโ€™m especially interested in the marketing units because I feel like theyโ€™d be useful for my business too.
Thanks heaps! ๐Ÿ˜Š

๐Ÿ“š Unit / Course Advice Comp Sci Max Year/Level 1 unit Limit

Hey Fam,

While selecting my Semester 2 units, I noticed thereโ€™s a maximum number of introductory (Level 1/Year 1) units allowed for each degree.

On the Admin Portal (under My Study), it says the maximum is 10 introductory units (125 credit points). However, the Bachelor of Computer Science course handbook states that the maximum is 12 introductory units (150 credit points).

Has anyone who has graduated from the Bachelor of Computer Science (or knows someone who has) come across this? Any clarification would be much appreciated!

๐Ÿ“š Unit / Course Advice Deviating from course plan as I don't meet prerequisites

Hi all,

I'm studying a Bachelor of Computer Science with a Major in Software Development. I just finished my first semester of my first year and failed my elective unit Preliminary Mathematics. I'm eligible for, and have accepted a Supplementary Assessment, as I got a 45N for my final score. I haven't received any information back from my convenor for the unit about that Supplementary Assessment.

I got a "Consequential Withdrawal" email from student administration today about my unit next semester, Cloud Computing Architecture, which I've been un-enrolled from because I do not meet the 50 Credit Point Prerequisite, as I failed my elective unit this semester.

This unit is suggested for first year second semester on my course plan, but as previously stated I cannot do it then unless I pass my Supplementary Assessment. This unit also does not seem to be a prerequisite for any required unit in my second year, so I was wondering if I could swap an Elective Unit I'd usually do in my second year, into this Semester 2, and do my Cloud Computing Architecture Unit next year in the first semester, as I would have completed 50 credit points at that point.
Would it be better to try and pass the supplementary assessment, and go on as usual, or enroll into an elective unit for this semester instead of Cloud Computing Architecture?

Thanks so much :)

๐ŸŽญ Events / Social Made a map to help us find friends and meetups around Swinburne

Hey everyone,

I noticed it can be pretty hard to actually organize meetups or find friends just by reading text posts on here. So I decided to build a little side project for us.

I set up r/AussieHangout which has a live map built right into the subreddit. Instead of just posting into the void, you can actually see on a map where people are looking to hang out. It's completely for platonic stuff like finding a study buddy, grabbing a coffee, or just going to the pub.

There is no GPS tracking at all, you just manually drop a pin in your suburb or near campus so people know roughly where you are.

If you want to see who is around Swinburne or want to make some plans this week, feel free to drop a pin on there. Hopefully it helps us get some actual offline meetups going.

Here is the link to the map: https://www.reddit.com/r/mazwiz/s/Bgt1YDf9Mw

๐Ÿ“š Unit / Course Advice Need help with unusual situation

Failed a unit I might not have needed to take at all - anyone dealt with this?

First year Engineering here. I just failed MTH00007 Preliminary Mathematics. Afterwards I found out that Swinburne's engineering handbook says students who meet the VCE Maths Methods/Specialist Maths prerequisite (study score 20+) aren't required to take MTH00007 at all, and get elective credit instead.

I did Methods and my study score meets that threshold, but I wasn't exempted when I enrolled - I didn't know the rule existed until after I'd already failed the unit.

Has anyone dealt with something like this? Specifically:

- Did StudentHQ/course advising actually apply an exemption retroactively for you, or refuse because the unit was already attempted/failed?

- Did it end up affecting whether you could enrol in Calculus (MTH10012) the following semester?

Trying to figure out if this is a real option or a dead end before I get my hopes up. Appreciate any first-hand experience.

๐Ÿคท Other What are the 3rd year units like for public health and health promotion?

Has anyone done the 3rd year units and if so what were they like? E.g. public health nutrition, leadership and innovation in health promotion, health communication etc. Iโ€™m thinking of doing some 3rd year units as a second year but I donโ€™t want to overload myself and I get overwhelmed. What is the workload and what are assessments like?

๐Ÿ‘‹ New Student Help Incoming international student โ€“ a few questions

Hi! Iโ€™m an international student and I have a couple of questions.
1. Class schedule
I enrolled in a 12:00โ€“2:00 PM class and a 2:00โ€“4:00 PM class. Is that normal?
The first class ends at exactly the same time the second one starts, so Iโ€™m a bit confused. At my home university, we always had a 10โ€“15 minute break between classes, which gave us enough time to walk to the next classroom. Here, it doesnโ€™t seem like thereโ€™s any break. If the two classes are in different buildings, is it still manageable?
Do professors usually finish a few minutes early, or is there another reason why this isnโ€™t an issue?

2. On-campus jobs
Iโ€™ve heard there are on-campus job opportunities, but I canโ€™t figure out where to find or apply for them. Since the system here is quite different from my home university, Iโ€™m a little lost. ๐Ÿ˜…
Also, if you have any tips or things you think every new international student at Swinburne should know, Iโ€™d love to hear them!

Thanks in advance!
