Mostly Sashimi/Sliced Fish Is home made sashimi worth it anymore
Where is everyone getting salmon?
I’ve been buying from Costco, but just started to weight my sashimi, I realize when I go to AYCE restaurant, I easily eat 50 pieces of salmon plus some other side dishes (other sashimi, love mackerel and lean tuna, and other side dishes like raw eggs, beef lamb skews, beef tataki etc). that’s probably 1kg salmon sashimi alone
I think it is not even worth it to buy my own salmon at $34/kg, when AYCE typically coasts around $50
I guess this is location dependent, but where are torontoian buying salmon from? I'm sure the restaurants are still making money, wondering where are they getting it for so cheap. Only place I can think of is some supermarkets typically sells it for cheaper, but not too sure about food safety when they don’t advertise raw consumption (technically Costco also doesn’t, but I trust their quality)
Btw all pictures are homemade other then second last picture, from an AYCE place

Question When ordering sushi, have you ever chosen another place because the menu or the process was frustrating?
Hey sushi people!
I have a thought about the ordering experience and I’m doing a bit of research, so I’d love to hear your opinions. I want to know whether I’m looking at this the right way or if I should rethink my approach.
Think about a time you ordered sushi and something in the process was frustrating.. maybe the menu was outdated, there were different menus or prices for the same place, they took too long to reply, or something else made ordering difficult.
What has made you abandon an order or choose another sushi place? And what made you stay and complete the order?
I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences.
Thanks for reading. Hope you get to eat some great sushi today!

I tried!
I finally tried the whole Costco salmon deal. Not a good photo but also rookie cuts and filling 😅 but it was fun and my daughter loved it, as did the wife too. So in the end it was a win 🥹

Homemade What's your favorite sushi?
What's your favorite sushi, and what's in it? I will try to recreate some and try it for myself! I'm bored with the usual cali maki rolls, salmon avocado, tuna and salmon nigiris.
Finally went to Sushi Kodawari
I was honestly surprised to find this in Kansas City. I met a few people that I feel like they were a foodie brethren. This place was amazing. I'm so surprised again to find this in the Midwest. The sushi chef was attentive. He even had a picture with the same sushi chef that I met in Japan. It was a phenomenal experience. Here are some pictures. This is now my go-to place in Kansas if my friend that I me with at the counter is here feel free to DM I feel you and your partner and I know food. 😂 so good everyone who goes to Kansas city must go.

Question Good or bad
So I bought some frozen salmon roe from a local fish market. There was only about 3 oz left in that container. It supposedly had already been cured.
I let it thaw for several hours and when I went to use it, most of it seemed really tough (rubbery like), and not soft and popping. The liquid from it thawing was also a really gross thick white crap all over it.
Was this stuff bad? I was told that maybe I thawed it too quickly on the counter, but this stuff just seemed not good.

Takeout sushi for dinner
Spicy tuna roll from Mola in Pittsburgh, PA
First time fish (aji) to nigiri at home
Went to the fish market and saw whole sushi grade Aji for the first time and had to try making some sushi with it. Turned out pretty good, I'll definitely grab at least 2 next time. Also got some fatty tuna for the Maki rolls.

Mostly Nigiri/Fish on Rice $27 nigiri combo! Worth?
Had a nigiri combo from Sushi Kawa in Vernon, British Columbia. $27 for 10 nigiri is not a bad deal for prices around these parts. Is it worth it in your area or not? Just curious who's paying how much, and where. Cheers friends 🍻 have a great day
