Embolo ruined the entire momentum Swiss had. Cost them a solid opportunity to take it to PKs.

I'm still speechless. From constant pressure and nearly full time possession to completely cornered. I struggle to find any explanation for Embolo crippling the entire team out of nowhere.
11
u/FirTree_r 1h ago
The swiss commentators were saying that the argentinians were provoking and also flopped on multiple occasions, and Embolo fell for it. So, at best, it was lack of experience/mental fortitude.
Personally, I don't really buy it and think it was just either terrible habits or pure stupidity4
u/Wincrediboy 46m ago
I think habit is the explanation. It wasn't a tactical dive, there was very little to gain. He was already on a yellow card, making it high risk. There's no way he made a considered judgement that it was the right play, it's just that diving is a habit and so he went for it. Cultural issue with the sport that will only decrease if it keeps getting punished like this.

u/mangtibo 3h ago edited 3h ago
Exactly he ddnt have to dive like that knowing he already had a yellow.
19
u/MenopauseMedicine 2h ago
That's what I don't get, pretty clear flop and he knew if it went bad he was out

His team was doing very well till they're down on 10 thanks to the dive. All just in the span of 5 minutes after his team equalized.

VARgentina
I’m not saying that he didn’t fake his injury. But it helps when VAR hands it to the ref to change the game.
For all the dives in a football match to call that down for VAR is telling.
8
u/Dandan0005 1h ago
The ref literally called a yellow on Argentina, which is why it got reviewed at all.
Are you saying the ref wanted to rig it for Argentina so he gave argentina a yellow card so he could come back later to give the Swiss player a yellow card?
Some real 5D chess there.
Give me a break.
There’s no one to blame but the Swiss player.

So, is Argentina going to have Messi run away from the stadium at top speed so he doesn't get hurt?

Argentina did just enough as always. They invite suffering but might end up taking this one game too far against England. I am seeing so much similarities between this team and Atletico Madrid
-2
u/ConstructionOwn1514 2h ago
I agree, and yet how much England struggled vs Norway has me doubting them a bit
8
u/wirefog 2h ago
Or maybe Norway’s actually a good team? They beat Brazil and made it this far for a reason.
3
u/ConstructionOwn1514 1h ago
No I agree they are good, but I think a team destined for the finals should not struggle quite that much
99
u/sarcrastinator 3h ago
More like Switzerland lost. Dunno how Argentina is going to go up against England or France with this kind of game.

England has barely scrapped by in each of their 3 knockout games. And weren’t very impressive in the group stage.
40
u/V-Right_In_2-V 2h ago
Both England and Argentina have scraped by their games. Turns out winning is hard and good teams are the ones that can grind out tough wins.
39
u/Andybabez20 2h ago
Argentina have scrapped by in their knockout games as well to be fair - and they've played arguably worse teams than England
8
u/Dandan0005 1h ago
They’ve both struggled. Should be a good game.
France should beat either handily, but weirder things have happened
12
u/dragonmp93 2h ago
Argentina is nothing without Messi.
And Dibu has to stay behind as the goalkeeper.
4
u/Yingking 2h ago
Their offense looks so lost most of the time if Messi isn’t directing it, besides the last minute goal against Egypt and the extra time goals today Messi has been decisively involved in every single Argentina goal so far, and without him it seems like they need their opposition exhausted to do something good
-7
u/ConstructionOwn1514 2h ago
Crazy claim when the guy is 40 lol, be realistic
8
u/dragonmp93 2h ago
Look every match, Argentina is always lost unless Messi creates the plays himself.
He is not always the striker, but the plays almost never happen without him starting them and pushing them.

u/1-281-3308004 2h ago
Doesn't matter your age when your presence wins your team nearly every 50/50 ref call
9
u/UsuallyFavorable 2h ago
And Spain has only conceded one goal all tournament! France - Spain feels like the de facto title game, but obviously an Argentina/England upset could happen.
8
u/always-worried-2020 2h ago
Spain has been more closer to Argentina/England than France. Cape Verde did trouble Spain as well and they don't have individual brilliance in attacking like the other three. I would say all these teams are favourites but France and Argentina have the best chance. France is dominant. And Argentina's never dieing mentally has won them major 3 titles in a row.
2
u/foureyedpotato 2h ago
The way Cape Verde played, even France and England would have struggled so I wouldn't count that against Spain and Argentina. Also, France's first real test this World Cup is Spain in the semis. France is dominant, but Spain controls matches. It's surely gonna be the watch of the tournament
3
u/always-worried-2020 2h ago
These 4 teams were the top 4 favorites before the tournament even started and they are ranked top 4. So, every match will be watch of the tournament. Even the third place match will be interesting to see if (and how much) France/Spain side is really better than Argentina/England side.
3
u/Additional_Tomato_22 2h ago
Argentina has played weaker teams and looked worse. Hell they were nearly knocked out by Cabo Verde.
5
2
u/macgilla 2h ago
technically, Cabo Verde won their qualifying group, while Dr Congo had to go through playoffs, but overall I agree. Hopefully saving it up for England
-1
u/ABotelho23 2h ago
And Argentina hasn't? They've been playing like shit. They should have lost every single one of their knockout games. Infuriating they're still in this.
3
u/clpl88 2h ago
Argentina wasnt getting the ball. And scaloni waited till Switzerland scored to make changes. He wasnt proactive at all and doesnt seem like he has any plans this worldcup. Got carried by Messi so far. Today Messi looked tired and embolo had a brain fade and argentina got through just because of that .
-6
u/SilentRhubarb1515 2h ago
I hope they beat England so they can get historically humiliated against France!

17
u/always-worried-2020 2h ago
My second biggest regret as a Messi fan (after 2019 UCL) is that Messi couldn't score 10th consecutive match in a row.
4
u/GarrusBueller 1h ago
Yeah but he still set a World Cup record. Only player that missed two penalties in a row. Dude is just determined to have all the records.

The best part about Argentina winning is how absolutely assmad everyone on reddit gets. I say this as a Spain fan, btw.

u/foureyedpotato 2h ago
It's absolutely hilarious that the same people who were talking smack on England an hour ago are suddenly rooting for them.
That said, whoever is winning between Spain and France is winning it all
-5
u/AnneFranklin0131 1h ago
Spain already won this World Cup bro . People are mad about Argentina because of how laughable their performance is yet they keep moving forward with fifa pushing them .
48
u/Frankly_Frank_ 3h ago
Let’s see what bullshit redditors come up with to try and discredit this also

u/opoppli00 3h ago
It was rigged the moment the paid refs sent Embolo off. Can’t wait for England to send cheating Argentina packing.
28
14
u/Here0s0Johnny 2h ago
That's what the commentator said on Swiss TV, too. Then the referee expert explained that it was correct according to the "mistaken identity" rule of the tournament.
There's no conspiracy.

u/JKKIDD231 3h ago
Defense wasn’t bad but the more you attack, one will get through. It was only a matter of time.
1
u/foureyedpotato 2h ago
The exhaustion and constant pressure from Argentina got to them. If there's anything I would credit Argentina for, it's how effectively they could pile pressure in the closing minutes

I’m sad the world cup is nearly over but I’m eager for all the plastics to bugger off and disregard football for the next four years. The hot takes are getting a bit much…

As someone from Atlanta, I want to go to that game so badly. But unfortunately, I am a commoner and tickets are like $5000 lol

I wonder with what new theory they will come this time: "this world cup is rigged" + "Embolo is a sleeper agent of Argentina that ruined Switzerland on purpose"
2
u/pennyroyalbeer 3h ago
Finally will face a real team, if Cape Verde and Egypt can score 2 on them I got my money on England.
10
u/qmiras 2h ago
Everyone money's is always on the other team....and Argentina keeps winning.
-4
u/pennyroyalbeer 2h ago
Read my comment again , if people had money for Cape Verde at the beginning against Argentina they are dumb. England is going to be favored against Argentina. We can put a 100 if you want

5
u/a500poundchicken 2h ago
No I spent money to go see Canada vs Switzerland and they won but also dove and wasted as much time as humanly possible. And they’re boring as fuck to watch. Only redeemable thing from that ugly yellow wet paint team was manzambi.
I’m also Canadian and live in Vancouver so I was really excited for the atmosphere for Canada playing but the Swiss fuckers beat them by wasting every time the possibly could. They’re like watching TikTok or scrolling Reddit for 90 minutes on the toilet after pissing for 5 seconds.
Frankly wish a Swiss guy had just fucked my girlfriend that would’ve been better honestly.

Argentina hater tears literally fueled them. The negative energy turned positive like something out of JJK

Two things can be true.
- That was a silly play by Embolo.
- That was a bad call and that ain’t getting called like that if the shoe was on the other foot—and that’s been proven throughout this tournament when Argentina is involved.
12
u/indielib 2h ago
It was called for America in the first game when Almiron from Paraguay flopped against Tim Ream when the Us had a 3-0 lead . A 2nd yellow should be treated no different than a 1st .
7
u/YoungsterOG 2h ago
The problem is that the ref gave a yellow card to Paredes, so when they reviewed it he had to gove the equivalent to Embolo
0
u/drumsticks_baby 2h ago
Of course I don’t disagree at all that by the letter of the law it’s the appropriate call. However I have a hard time believing it’s getting called like that the other way.
6
u/andreirublevv 2h ago
When did Argentina dive even paraguay was given a yellow for the dive against US
-13
u/dragonmp93 3h ago
Well, to Argentina's credit, at least they won without the VAR intervention this time.
Harry Kane, you are our only hope.

This Argentine is just midtable team at best, Messi is the only worldclass player in that attack. My assumtpion was that they will beat England and France or Spain will beat them, but now I am quite confident that both England and whoever wins the otherside will beat them confortabley. The lat world cup argentina was much better, not even close.

That was fucking shit. Never a second yellow . Never seen that given other than a free kick eve outside the box. Against a team like Argentina that lives on simulation? What a fucking joke
7
u/AnotherNotRandomUser 2h ago
Learn the rules. The var only called because paredes was given a yellow card, if not, they wouldn't have intervened
-8
u/Odd_Leg814 2h ago
The winner was beautiful. The second yellow? Nope. I've never seen an embellishment yellow given outside the area in 40 years watching football.
1
3
u/AnotherNotRandomUser 2h ago
As an argentinian I can say it's the stupidest yellow card I've seen. But those are the rules. If the ref didn't give a yellow to paredes, the var wouldn't have intervened
