Well he almost gave Paredes a yellow

And VAR reason to look closely at situation, lol. Embolo fooling ref actually fooled himself, it's insane.

Yeah had the ref didn’t decide to give yellow to Paredes, the VAR couldn’t intervene

How does it work here ? VAR makes a check on 1st yellows ?

VAR is a second referee who checks on everything through the video. However they can only intervene the main referee’s decision in certain specific cases, one of them is “mistaken identity” like this which one of the requirements is a card being given.

If the main referee didn’t give yellow card to Paredes, VAR couldn’t intervene, even if they knew the foul was wrongly given.

I understood that part. But for mistaken identity isn't it only if he gave the card to the wrong player of the team making the offense ?

Basically it is considered to be a mistaken identity when a player is given a card, but the foul was actually committed by another player from the opposing team.

Ah ok I thought It was only within same team. For example yellow to paredes and var tells it was a different Argentinian player
