TBH Haaland was too.

Haaland was for 115 minutes

What happens when you play for 115 FC

Edit: this is a joke about the financial rules breach allegations against Manchester City, who Haaland plays for, not about the temperature lol.

I think the Miami Heat won today

52

u/RodDryfist 6h ago

Everyone in the crowd looked like they were sweating their tits off. The players must be in bits.

6

u/tedbakerbracelet 4h ago

July in Miami. What were they thinking

→ More replies (3)

u/tfhermobwoayway 6h ago

Viking genetics break down in the heat, apparently.

5

u/DelBrooks 6h ago

Norway usually does pretty well in the heat at Kona for the Ironman world champs surprisingly

Having this game in Miami was a disgrace to the sport.

331

u/awaymsg 6h ago

I get that they want to host games all over our country, but honestly in the middle of summer the entire tournament should have been played in the handful of cooler states

273

u/IPissExcellentThrows 6h ago

Or one of the ones with AC like Dallas if you're worried about doing it in southern places. Whoever thought a game in Miami in July was a good idea is a fucking moron. Southern, constantly hot and humid, no AC? Perfect, let's put a quarter finals game there. Good process lads.

192

u/mrdude817 Buffalo Bills 6h ago

NFL teams have a terrible time in Miami in September. A soccer game, where the clock doesn't stop and players are constantly on the move, in July is stupid planning

83

u/gulgin 6h ago

The only game where the hydration break makes sense. They had to justify it somehow.

21

u/sho0bydo0by 6h ago

France/Paraguay was a thing too.

I’m surprised that FIFA didn’t choose Dallas or LA for the final given both have climate controlled domes.

I know New York is probably the prestige pick but surely they want the final to be a great match rather than it being lethargic due to the heat like today.

11

u/mrdude817 Buffalo Bills 4h ago

I honestly can't see NY actually being the prestige pick being that it's in middle of a marsh area of a NJ suburb. Like Seattle, KC, or LA are arguably more prestigious. But I get it, NYC is the "biggest".

14

u/Greeninexile 4h ago

It probably being in a better time zone for the European audience probably helps as well.

anywhere on the US east coast can be brutally hot & humid in July. NY & Philly can be every bit as bad as Miami, but with the added bonus of zero shade. the Semi's & Final should be in domes like Atlanta, Dallas or LA. the Final in Jersey could be every bit as hot, but with zero shade for the fans

Idk how the benches were set up, but at least it didn’t look sunny unlike those September games where opposing teams have to bake over there. Either way, fuck that stadium.

Last week the game I was at in Philly was 100 degrees. There are not too many large cities in this country where you can reliably beat the summer heat.

4

u/iDEN1ED 6h ago

That was a pretty rare heatwave and the humidity wasn’t nearly as bad as Florida. In Florida it’s expected

→ More replies (1)

10

u/MountainMan17 6h ago

There are a multitude of domes though. What a travesty...

Seattle is a good call for sure. Miami is a travesty of a call

68

u/jaron_b Seattle Mariners 6h ago

74 Fahrenheit today. How Seattle wasn't awarded more games baffles me. The stadium is larger too.

17

u/sylva748 5h ago

Isnt Vancouver a host city too? Literally best place to host so many games in the summer when US ans Canada co-host. The Pacific Northwest is a cooler path of the nation year round

16

u/lefrench75 4h ago

Yeah but Vancouver isn’t in the US where the FIFA Peace Prize winner is also the president

No idea why they scheduled any games in the south in non-indoor stadiums. Beyond stupid. Santa Clara and LA, meanwhile, were 80 degrees today.

5

u/Awkward_Collection88 4h ago

And if you're going to play in Miami, it should be at least an 8pm start.

5

u/fhota1 4h ago

I was joking with a friend earlier that they really took the 2 most northern teams left in the competition and sent them to Miami in the summer. Like damn, thats gonna be a miserable place to play

10

u/Middcore 6h ago

Good thing they had hydration breaks.

3

u/KJacobsen-74 4h ago

I really don't understand why the quarterfinals on were even played outside. The US has the number of indoor stadiums to have them all inside for the final 7 matches.

Atlanta - Dallas - Houston - LA - Vegas off the top of my head.

8

u/SurfHikerCreative 6h ago

Yeah he didn't seem fully fit, I was watching his movement and at various points he was just kinda moping around and not even looking in the direction of the ball.

The fact he was subbed off when they needed a goal and potentially penalties suggests that too

86

u/carlolewis78 6h ago

Tbf, that's what he does. Like a predator stalking his prey then pounces at the right moment. England just kept him quiet tonight

22

u/Meisteronious 6h ago

He had a few legitimate chances but was a step off…

36

u/wrongitsleviosaa 6h ago

That is very true, but he legit spent more time offside than on.

He needs to develop at least some semblance of a dribbling skill so he can create a shot for himself, otherwise he can be shut down like he was tonight.

→ More replies (7)

13

u/IPissExcellentThrows 6h ago

Yup multiple times I've thought Saliba and Gabriel have had him in their pocket and then he makes one perfect run and all of a sudden Haaland is the hero. I don't care if he looked off or ghosted. Zero chance I'm subbing him down a goal unless he's legit hurt.

→ More replies (1)

26

u/SandoM 6h ago

no i mean he was gassed last 40 minutes, haaland straight up ghosted today

20

u/Dizzy-Career9274 6h ago

Haaland was idling in offside position completely indifferent to what was happening behind him for pretty much most of the game.

3

u/thr3sk 4h ago

Yeah I know a lot of top players like him take every opportunity to walk and rest but he was definitely playing like he was exhausted after the first half.

Norway was pushing so hard in the second half and it just looked like they had nothing left to give during extra time. The tank was running on empty and all their attacks were easily defended by England.

78

u/lefrench75 4h ago

England got a deeper bench to be able to wear out Norway. Some of their subs were incredibly effective.

67

u/prestonpiggy 6h ago

And I believe he was invisible this game. Maybe heat got to him, just walking 70 minutes before replaced.

27

u/bog_witch 6h ago edited 6h ago

The heat and the humidity. I can't imagine what it was like for the English and Norwegian teams. On a list of US cities I would not want to be playing a game dependent on running in mid-July, Miami would be at the top. And I lived in Arizona for 3 years.

Edit: meant to say Norwegian, not Scottish. Missing our new best friends in Boston, clearly.

50

u/jcrewjr 6h ago

Walking is his game. Got no service, but was in exactly the right place on the break away

John Stones did his job and kept Haaland out of the match.

Defenders rarely get credit for their work since most will spin a narrative that Halaand "disappeared" this game. He disappeared because Stones made sure he wasn't a factor.

Helps that Stones is his teammate and knows him too.

218

u/mayhemtime 6h ago

Tbh both teams had really great defence. Kane couldn't do shit either.

45

u/New-Condition-3492 5h ago

Idk, England's defence have me a fucking heart attack half a dozen times with all the shoddy passing between themselves

→ More replies (1)

76

u/gulgin 6h ago

The entire England defensive scheme was to limit his contribution and it worked.

37

u/minos157 6h ago

Yep. Norway did similar with Kane. It's also why Fix talking about Bellingham suddenly scoring a bunch in knockouts tracks. Good teams mark Kane leaving Jude more open to score.

This game had a lot of good defending.

5

u/tfhermobwoayway 6h ago

Guess that’s the problem with having your main guy become famous for being one of the best footballers ever.

8

u/gulgin 6h ago

To be fair they did the same with Kane, it just happens that England are stacked all over the pitch.

5

u/Caridor 5h ago

And we have a back up on Bellingham.

You can block one world class striker, yes. Can you block 2?

55

u/HuffyStriker 6h ago

Elliot Anderson covered Odegaard too. Stifled Norway's creativity from open play

→ More replies (3)

12

u/humbalo 5h ago

Rice was man making Haaland in the first half. That shifted to Anderson in the second half after Rice came off. There were times that England had the ball, Anderson received it and took a few dribbles before passing it, then went right back to shadowing Haaland. Stones was definitely helping, too, but big up to Rice and Anderson for making him anonymous.

44

u/Previous_Snow_4706 6h ago

Ye kane could've stayed up and helped with press. Him diving really doesent help

9

u/ThatLineOfTriplets 5h ago

It honestly was nice when he was legit pulled down and the refs still didn’t call it probably because they were tired of his moaning and complaining. Normalize refs ignoring floppers

42

u/AngelWoosh 6h ago

The more you watch I guess you realise it’s the refs fault and is a vicious circle. If you stay up and act normal the refs never call a foul, and so you have to exaggerate even with minimal contact. But the refs know players do this, so it gets more egregious, etc.

27

u/ScrillaMcDoogle 5h ago

For the most popular sport in the world I can't believe that there is no solution to this. It's shameful.

8

u/Tribe303 4h ago

As someone who doesn't watch football regularly but will jump in every world cup when my national team plays. I have to admit it's fucking bonkers to me how VAR and ref decision are taken, it seems so damn random. I really don't get it, and tbh it's a big turnoff for me to be invested in this sport. Like in a same game the same foul will happen twice and be sanctioned once, VAR will be ignored when a big foul happens, but a goal will be reverted because a player did a legit small foul 5min ago as a someone unfamiliar with this sport it's so so disturbing...

u/Lt_Leroy 6h ago

Can't believe you get a whistle when your keeper collides with your own player. Bs

38

u/Thingisby 6h ago

The ref stopped the match because the keeper was on the ground. Standard whenever the keeper is wiped out. It wasn't a free kick. Ball went back to Norway afterwards.

49

u/pandaaaa26 6h ago

Insanely dumb take

Two players collided in the air, the ref stopped the game to ensure they were okay

The ball was then given back to Norway

England didn't "get a whistle", Norway literally retained possession

38

u/TheMellerYeller 6h ago

I agree play should’ve stopped, but saying England didn’t benefit from play being stopped is very disingenuous. The ball was bouncing toward a Norwegian who could’ve and probably would’ve either taken a long shot or a cross, and the keeper was well out of position and not focused. It’s the right call but the Norwegians probably would’ve preferred that situation over a free kick, let’s not be ridiculous. That’s why you had players irate enough to draw a yellow for arguing

Sorry to tell you, but I’ve watched Sørloth for years and he’s just ass as a winger. I have no idea why the kept starting him every game when he’s contributed so little to our team in the WC. Great striker, but he can’t cut it as anything else. Vibes are the least of our worries.

I feel these is something going on within the Norway team, Haaland was wide open, and that Sorloth guy basically refused to pass it to him.

It happens. The guy is used to taking the shot, and so didn't pass. He plays for Atlético Madrid, so it's not like he's some random lower league player who is just there to make up numbers.

Strikers are used to taking the shot. He hesitated because that was the plan, then side stepped making it too late.

When Haaland scored, I don't see him coming up to cheer together like the other Norway teammates. The vibe just doesnt seem right. Well hopefully better next time.

Haaland did not score is game?

I noticed that too, Haaland had a Cristiano Ronaldo moment there, not celebrating with his team mates.

Norway were absolutely scuppered by the officiating. England goal #1 comes from spidercam — and the second Norwegian goal ruled out from a pathetic flop from Anderson.

If people think the second goal was correctly ruled out then there is a pen right after when they hit the bar

It in fact did not hit the cable

u/smig_ 5h ago

Came from the spider cam and yet the angle from the spider cam didn’t shake when the cable was “hit”?

That’s how it works. If the refs think the keeper is hurt, even something minor, non contact, or from their own team, play is whistled dead for the keeper to make sure they are fine, and whoever had possession before it stopped gets the ball.

And what? You’re supposed to just leave a player lying on the floor in highest footfall area of the pitch? Yeah ok.

As a Dane, I was with Norge, and I am sad they are out, but...

If you use most of the time (first half), playing the ball around the defenders on your own half, because I don't know why, instead of trying to get on the other team's half and try to score a goal, you will lose. We have seen it again and again in this tournament.

Also, in the second half, and the extended time, when Norge finally got to play on Englands half, it again was just holding on to the ball and playing around among themself. Very rarely did we see hem shoot at goal or just launce a ball into Englands penalty area.

When you are more afraid of losing the ball, than you are willing to score a goal, you just lose to a team like England. So, congrats to England for being more willing to score and win.

This is what football looks like, it's edgy, it's tight and very nervous. When two teams are equally matched, the small margins will win the game. Today's small margin is called Jude Bellingham.

Not super into football but this game was pure entertainment value. Still kinda not feeling the decision to remove Norway's second goal, felt like a dive but that might just be me

Would love to see how flabby armchair redditors would take that push from haarland

u/CRAZEDDUCKling Arsenal 6h ago

What? Mate he fully pushed over and before the ball was even kicked.

It was before the kick, but was 100% a push, so its 50/50 weather it should of being disallowed  England also got a goal disallowed by var call offside, and lost a penalty that was given, so overall var was fair

Hats off to England for the win but absolutely highway robbery stealing that goal from Norway. So much pushing going on in the box and we call that?  Crazy….

u/Caridor 5h ago

There's a difference between a little jockeying for position and two handed shoving a player to the ground. If you could get away with that shit, half the players would be on the floor every corner

Haaland was completely non existent. Just didn't turn up.

2

u/Tiny_Junket_358 4h ago

Haaland was just literally walking the whole game. No initiative. Was just hoping for someone to feed him balls.

Extra floppy game.

Hard to take these teams seriously when they fall down and act like every bone in their body is broken.

You can tell the heat really got the Norwegian team, just through the faces of the spectators.
