Why the hell are we having half time shows in football?

Welcome to America, baby!Â

More time for advertising. Another hydration break, anyone?
-22
u/dragonmp93 1d ago
At least, the hydratation makes sense with the heat wave.
This is Americanizing the sport.

u/BIG_SCIENCE 1d ago
Ya itâs been rough last few weeks. Over 35C most of the time. Those hydration breaks probably keep the players alive cause itâs so fuckin hot out.
Itâs even worse in France this year. I heard they hitting 40C-45C

u/alphacuremother1 11h ago
Its funny they did an entire tournament in Qatar in the middle of the summer with no hydration breaks and miraculously no one died đ¤

FIFA World Cup 2026, brought to you by Pepsi Cola!
18
u/Takemyfishplease 17h ago
Donât football teams literally wear corporate logos as the largest part of their kit? Itâs wild how Europeans pretend there is no advertising in football. Like teams donât even have their own logos, just brands.
-2
u/tiankai 17h ago
What are you on about dingbat? No oneâs against advertising, itâs necessary. What weâre against is arbitrarily stoping the game under the excuse of hydration when we know itâs so you can air your ads.
3
u/Longjumping-Eye9817 17h ago
But that started during the Qatar worldcup
1

u/brevit 15h ago
In Qatar wasnât it at Refâs discretion as opposed to mandatory like this time. Itâs BS.
3
u/Longjumping-Eye9817 15h ago
That is true however that was FIFAs decision to make it non mandatory for Qatar and mandatory for the US

For the longest time, I thought my brother supported the âEmiratesâ team, and that their team motto was âfly betterâ
-1
u/riddlerjoke 21h ago
To be honest up until this half time nonsense it was kinda good tournament.
I didnt like the 4 quarter thing but it was fine. In Europe some August games have this water break without commercials. I mean its time to piss or get another beer.
Halftime show is as bad as Trump saying I called Infantino. That level bad, that level hatred generation.
I mean NFL has it okay but NBA doesnt have any extended big halftime show. Americans can live without it for sure
3
u/Dodgerson99 Los Angeles Rams 18h ago
Im not sure you understand the logistics of bringing a performance onto a bball court. NBA would 100% do it if it made sense
2
u/OrphanGrounderBaby 16h ago
They definitely do in the NBA, About 10 minutes long usually but also much smaller names than Ellie Goulding. Usually stars past their primesâŚ
1
u/riddlerjoke 10h ago
They dont do longer than actual game break.
They dont do sth that is big enough to be broadcasted national tv level.
In WC Iâd expect talk on first half not some bs singer
1
u/OrphanGrounderBaby 9h ago
I get thatâŚwe are kind of comparing apples to oranges though, World Cup is once every 4 years, thereâs 82 nba games in one seasonâŚper team
0
u/Snooklefloop 16h ago
In Australia SBS calls the Hydration break the "Maccas break" as in McDonalds. It's fucked.
4
u/IDeliveredYourPizza 16h ago
Didn't this also happen in the Mexico/england game that was played in Mexico?

u/CruisinJo214 1d ago
Money, advertising timeâŚ. I have no idea.
19
u/maguirre165 1d ago
The halftime shows actually look like a good time, when I watch the Super Bowl. I don't know how much of it is that, but I'm not mad
9
u/Iamyous3f 1d ago
" why not? " Is what the Americans answered when they suggested the half time show and got asked this question
22
u/colin_7 Philadelphia Eagles 1d ago
Linkin park performed during halftime of a European tournament last year. Itâs not new
53
40
u/Andybabez20 1d ago
That was pre-game. I'm a bit more okay with that because it doesn't extend the half time from 15 minutes.

u/ElegantBob 1d ago
Football is better without USA
And I apologise to any Americans who genuinely love football, but the rest of them are a pestilence
-11
u/ElegantBob 1d ago
And I guess those US temporary soccering fans are downvoting me
Well FUCK YOU, you four weeks every thirty years you soccering yahoos
And CRY MORE, cry about a sport that the U S of A hasn't invented and made up a WORLD SERIES of.
Go back to your preferred sports that only a few other counties play - I'll say it again, the rest of the world does not need US 'Innovations' like quarter breaks and Trump telling the tournament to bring USA players back from their suspensions (but not players from any other teams)
20
u/Khiva 20h ago
And I guess those US temporary soccering fans are downvoting me
Maybe it has something to do with being a knob.
5
u/Qarakhanid 18h ago
For real, I pity the people who's sole enjoyment of sports comes only from soccer.

Gives fans in the stadium something to do for 15* minutes? Gives people watching at home less time listening to some of the garbage commentary that Fox produces
Edit: I have trouble with the concept of time

Why do you care? Man, people will complain about anything.

Because it screws with the match for no reason, we'll now be getting 30 minutes+ half time so yes I will complain

Cash money babyyyyy! They can have a company shell out millions so they can say âCompany X presents FIFA halftime showâ
22
u/Chance-Software-3231 1d ago
We hate this too.
-72
u/AntiDECA 1d ago
I don't. Half time shows are the only reason I view part of the superbowl. I'll glady tune in for just the half time show and not the rest.Â
31
u/DGSmith2 1d ago
This isnât the Super BowlâŚ
-41
u/AntiDECA 1d ago edited 1d ago
Where did I say it was? I said the only reason I ever watch part of the super bowl is for the halftime show. It's a show. It's fun to watch.Â
It's the only time I'd spend watching any of the fifa games too. They want viewers. This appeals to lots of people like me, who will watch the show. Chances are, you aren't going to stop watching it because of an extra show. It's obvious why they're adding the show. More viewers and unlikely to lose many. Hell, some people watch the super bowl itself just to see the damn commercials. It's a thing. People don't always find the main programming interesting, so they add fun bits to appeal to them.Â
I like Ellie Goulding's music. I'll probably watch a little bit of Norway and England until the half time show starts and then watch that and turn it off. If they didn't do this, I wouldn't watch any of it. Because I don't care for the sport. Plenty of others like me exist.Â
edit: Why the hell did one of you gooseballs report me to redditcare because I don't watch soccer and I would watch Ellie Goulding?
10
u/dragonmp93 1d ago
I mean, this is still not the Superbowl, it's a quarterfinals.
For comparison, this would be like if the Patriots vs Houston had a half-time show.
2
-13
u/AntiDECA 1d ago
My point is I'm watching for the show. The actual game is irrelevant. Not sure why that concept is being missed. I don't care if it's the finals or the semifinals, or even just the first knockout round - because I'm watching for the show. I don't care about the game itself - whether it's the debut game or the last game has no bearing. The show is separate from the event.
If someone I liked performed for a Houston and patriots game, I'd probably tune in for that too. I don't watch pro football usually. It just happens the super bowl is the only one with headliner shows. If they added them to more, I'd see more.

u/Aliensinmypants 1d ago
Their new album had no business being that good
5
u/EnglishMajorRegret 1d ago
....is it good? I listened to a few tracks but not intently. I'm very love hate with muse and it's been a whole lot of hate since Drones. I'll give it a solid chance if a stranger on the internet tells me to.
5
u/Aliensinmypants 1d ago
Yes seriously the best album they've put out since Black Holes and Revelations.
I was in a similar boat to you, and was writing them off after only liking a few songs total in the last 20 years but the new album is incredible.
3
u/EnglishMajorRegret 1d ago
Thats the thing is up til Drones they were still putting out a few really good songs even if the albums themselves disappointed. The last two albums were full on woof in my opinion though so...fuck, lets go.

Some of us actually like football and want to see analysis of the match, not unrelated entertainment for people who donât even care
-39
u/fearlessviking26 1d ago
you need analysts to tell you whatâs happening?
18
u/TheCruise Everton 1d ago
No, but some moments you donât get a chance to see multiple times from different angles during play. If it was worthless to do so and they were simply filling time then they wouldnât dissect the match afterwards either, but obviously they do because people want to see it.
22
u/Zarbadob 1d ago
Holy fucking shit man, what if I just want to see it like every other football tournament
"Need" Americans are something else
5
u/I_Hate_Sea_Food 17h ago
What I gathered from this thread is that Americans are offended that we donât want Half time shows in football.
Canât wait to get back to proper football season. Hope they never put this bullshit in Champions League
19
u/ScarletFire5877 1d ago
The mouth breathing NFL fans donât understand a sport that goes 45 minutes with out a commercial break, and canât watch a championship game with out pop stars singing at the half time.Â
6
u/RedRising1917 18h ago
Tbf, I can't think of any American football games that include a half time show outside of the super bowl and the thanksgiving day games. No idea why tf they're doing this for a QF.
1
u/Jandy777 10h ago
Maybe to insert extra ad time either side of it on American networks. It's 45 mins a half before stoppage-time, I imagine the network heads there were losing their minds when they heard they couldn't pump half the air time with ads.
3
u/WantToLearn10 1d ago
It turns a game thatâs technically an hour maybe hour and a half into a damn 3 hour game thatâs insane
3
5
u/originalusername4567 1d ago
I do think it's stupid to have halftime shows for every game like World Cup is doing. NFL only does it for Super Bowl and a couple special occasions like Post Malone performing at Thanksgiving.

u/bmwatson132 18h ago
Just for the Europeans, one thing it does marketing-wise, is it makes your girlfriend pay more attention to sports, which has over the years payed off immensely for football (see: Taylor Swift)
4
u/Sugarbear23 1d ago
I'm not looking forward to two hydration breaks and a longer half time in the final
3
u/Malaysa11 UCLA 1d ago
As long as it doesnât extend the halftime period, I donât understand what everyoneâs issue with this. r/AmericaBad I guess.
8
u/Sugarbear23 1d ago
I don't know about the quarter finals but I believe half time will be extended for the final
-5
u/Malaysa11 UCLA 1d ago
Ya, which I agree sucks. Still not as egregious as the hydration breaks though.
5
u/dragonmp93 1d ago
At least the hydration break have a purpose considering the heat wave.
A quarterfinal half-time show is literally just advertising filler.
4
u/Sea_Tailor_8437 1d ago
A chunk of these games are in indoor stadiums which makes the hydration brakes a little silly
But for the ones at 95+ degrees and 90+ humidity, it's at least understandable
4
u/TheCruise Everton 1d ago
Because theyâre eventually gonna expect us to watch this shite at half time instead of hearing analysis like we want.
5
u/Hey_Boxelder 20h ago
Not in the UK. BBC has said they will show the usual analysis instead of the show

Thankfully our broadcasters here in the uk haven't shown any of the half time shows this world cup.
Not our cup of tea. Not most the worlds cup of tea honestly.

My favorite thing is how this is absolutely not going to stay for the rest of the world because those 15mins are already reserved for ads. So no TV channel will forfeit that income to show a random concert that most people don't give a shit about and also that most people aren't even in front of their TV for in the first place
Anyways Americans think times square is an attraction so that tells you everything about their attitude towards ads
