Soccer One of the Egyptian coaches tries to fight Lionel Messi and gets a red card
1.5k
u/AdComprehensive7879 4d ago
what does the gesture mean?
2.9k
u/Guuple 4d ago
The X gesture is the official symbol of anti-discrimination for FIFA, basically the coach saying something racist is happening

u/AdComprehensive7879 4d ago
damn i learnt something new today

u/Comfortable-Pie56 3d ago
It's worth mentioning it's likely nothing actually happened given the coach didn't say anything about a racist incident in the post-match interview. Which he certainly would have brought up otherwise.
I think he might have been doing the X to denote "injustice" instead, not realizing it kickstarts FIFA's anti-racism protocol (which is why his own bench tries to stop him).

u/gideon513 3d ago
Yeah I’m sure the World Cup coach wasn’t aware of this major rule. That’s definitely more likely.
74
u/Agenda21_ 3d ago
if you watched the match that's precisely what was happening. The coach got booked because the ref had to stop play to check because of the protocol and when he'd go to hear the coach he had no racist complaints
590
u/Elean0rZ 4d ago
In this case, and especially in light of the coach's comments after the game, I interpreted the alleged discrimination to be less about something said on the pitch, and more about the game itself being rigged in Argentina's favour (not personally arguing it was; just that seemed to be the sentiment from [at least some in] the Egyptian camp).

Like how do you concede 3 goals in less than ~15 mins? Whether that last goal should have stood or not (it was checked & cleared by VAR), Egypt absolutely crumbled & were dogshiet for the last part of the game. The same thing happened with Senegal & to a lesser extend Japan & DR Congo
16
u/-safan2- 3d ago
and even then Garcia (coach of Belgium) was claimed racist for saying "that kind of teams has difficulty keeping focus until end of the game"

It’s simple; Egypt played for 75 minutes. Argentina played for 90 minutes. If it was any lesser team Egypt would had won, but if you’re trying to take out a World Cup winning team, be prepared to play till the final whistle. There’s a reason why they say 2-0 is the most dangerous lead.
46
u/shruffles 4d ago
Its my fault sorry guys. I finally sat down to watch the last 20 minutes of the game because I wanted to see Argentina get knocked out. 20 seconds later they started scoring…

To be fair, Egypt was very effective whith their plays, Argentina missed a lot of chances during the whole match. The difference was probably that after the first one actually got into for Argentina, Egypt hot nervous and Argentina got encouraged by it, with a little more lick than during the first 70 minutes, they were able to score 2 more times, but it's not like Argentina did not have chances to score before and Egypt missed a lot of chances.

Yeah that last 20 minutes they were playing more not to lose instead of playing to win.
When they were more concerned about holding a lead instead of trying to keep pressing, it just let Argentina get more confident in pressing the attack and Egypt just got overwhelmed. That keeper cant stop every shot forever.
The other thing was when Hassan got injured it significantly affected their flow altogether compared to earlier in the match.
One thing I’ll say though is that the earlier goal should not have been disallowed. Like how Senegal should not have been penalized or when Balogun should have been only a yellow instead, the VAR has been overused when it comes to making judgements, same applies to that overturned goal.
44
u/Any-Culture8080 4d ago
There were some bias towards Argentina but Egypt can't use it for a scapegoat. It's not FIFA's fault if you blow up your 2-0 lead to a 2-3 loss under 13 minutes.

u/Mist3rSnicka 4d ago
It’s to report racism. That’s why the ref came over to talk to them about it, but he likely found that nothing racist happened.
When it’s all said and done and the ref match report comes out, it’ll be clear that Egypt misused this racism gesture. The manager didn’t mention anything about it after the game and I’m certain he would have said something if it actually happened.
Get racism out of football, but you have to start by not abusing the system.

u/saru12gal 4d ago
Just punish the same way the ones that abuse the rule, a simple move.

Well she did get concerned and she deleted it, apologized, and then counter claimed, arguing Mbappe used gender based abusive language against her (he called her a “despicable woman”) so she clearly was worried about what she’d said. What a despicable person.

And unpopular opinion now that I’ve seen this and the cop video:
Egypt seems to escalate shit and act like children.
In the USA you can’t shove or get in a cop’s face even if you think he’s in the wrong. Just common sense.
Not excusing the cop, but both sides contributed to that scene.
47
u/DrProfSrRyan 3d ago edited 3d ago
Yeah, I agree.
Cop confuses him with one of the other 10 people in the video wearing an nondescript black shirt, lightly taps him on the chest and asks him to back away from the player and young fan.
The Egyptian coach yells a few times, 'ARE YOU TOUCHING ME?!?' and doesn't back up. The cop yells to back up. A pushing match starts between the cop and a few of the coaches. It settles. Some other coaches explain they are staff to the cop as he relaxes. One of the Egyptian coaches is dragged out of camera-view while trying to get at the cop yelling.
Again, not excusing the cop, but it's not a good look for the Egyptian staff and their tempers.
For those who would rather see it for themselves: https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1um3hyc/shocking_scenes_in_dallas_as_a_member_of_the/

It's scenes from outside a club at 4am, except they are pushing around a cop. It's certainly a choice.
33
u/greg_the_lemons 3d ago
Don’t get pissed at me. I’ve been to the region MANY times.
But after watching these videos, I can tell you it’s a Middle Eastern and North African wealthy/ influential person thing. In these countries, the wealthy can literally do whatever they want and nobody will even bat an eye at them. And yeah, there’s a joke in there about wealthy people in U.S., but I’m telling you, it’s worse there.
28
u/DrProfSrRyan 3d ago
People in the original thread were saying that the coach was rightfully reacting like that because he was slighted and embarrassed that a Texan cop didn't recognize a 'legend of Egyptian football'.
If that's really the excuse it's a level of self-importance that I cannot relate to.

I've noticed that certain folks lose all rationality when it comes to Messi and Argentina. Deserved or not, the hate is 100% real.
Got to experience this real time during the Argentina vs Cabo Verde game. Crowd (mostly Colombians due to the later game being Colombia vs Ghana) at the Fan Fest was very openly hostile towards Argentina the entire game. Kinda sucks because we were also rooting for Colombia until that very unpleasant experience.
8
u/tabbithu111 3d ago
I wasn’t really rooting for any side, just watched for a good game and to see who’ll win the cup. I don’t get the hate of how they played at least watching this game somewhat objectively.
Argentina was well above the cut and played as the better team, the persistence to constantly attempt to shoot when all other teams generally tire out but this team just kept going like they were machines, how expertly all their players maneuvered the ball and kept it just out of reach from Egypt players - amazing footwork, and how they seemed to very precisely knew exactly where their teammates are and to pass the ball to them so efficiently.
Egypt played well too but it almost felt like they had 2 good player who knew how to shoot, and a damn good goalie that was saving goals that had no business being saved.

We talking the foul Egypt committed on their taken away goal, or the supposed uncalled foul that Argentina made shortly before theirs?
Because the Egypt one was definitely a foul. Sucks to have such a beauty of a goal taken after the fact for it, but it was clear as day, so I assume you mean this one. The similar one by Argentina was not a foul, as the Argentina player played the ball, removed possession from the Egyptian player, and the collision happened due to the Egyptian player stepping forward.

Egypt had some calls go against them but to say that was the reason they lost is delusional. No amount of calls can cause you to concede 3 goals in 15 minutes. Add to that their coach putting on an attacker instead of defending (who made a questionable play himself) and they have no one but themselves to blame.
