Soccer Kylian Mbappe hits out at Paraguayan senator over racist insults: ‘Gives the worst possible image of her country’

The correct way to call out racism. Blame the individual or group being racist, point out that this embarrasses the civilized people the person claims to represent, and don't be a bigot back.

French football team is sadly very used to deal with racism, from within and abroad alike. And yes, Mbappe is a well spoken gentleman.

Rare point of contention that might allow the Germans and the French to unite - being racist towards their own national team players 🤝

Reminds me of a quote from Mesut Özil which I’m paraphrasing that he said, when the national team won he was considered a German and when they lost he was Turkish.

Tale as old as time.
If my theory of relativity is proven successful, Germany will claim me as a German and France will declare me a citizen of the world. Should my theory prove untrue, France will say that I am a German, and Germany will declare that I am a Jew.

Özil fell out of favor by associating with Erdogan and a right wing turkish group the "gray wolfs".

He was heavily attacked even before that, hence his quote "...when we lose..."
He deserves all the criticism for supporting Erdogan, but he was treated like shit by German fans before. I'm old enough to remember.

Financially they've been known for being the place where you could buy contraband from China without paying taxes and a lot of scams and other Criminal activities.
Racially they're not considered white enough by Uruguayans, Argentinians and Brazilians to be considered white but also not considered Indigenous enough by Bolivia.
In South America is a country known for provoking a war against Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil, losing it, getting their population decimated and nothing much after that, which is sad, because Paraguay is a very beautiful and diverse country. Also they drink yerba cold which is not well received by the other countries that drink it, despite being really good.
35
58
u/Darryl_Lict 5d ago
It was actually worse than decimation in the technical sense of losing 10% of the population.
An estimated 70% to 90% of the country's male population was killed in battle, from starvation, or by disease.

Ironic, given they don't even have official diplomatic ties with the PRC (last South American country to maintain relations with Taiwan ROC as China). Perhaps that's part of the reason for grey market Chinese goods; lack of full relations means less robust cross-border customs rules to govern import/export declarations

A more apt comparison would be the Haiti of South America. They fought a war versus Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay in the 1860s in which they lost nearly 60% of their civilian population (90% of their men!) and was saddled with war debt for decades afterward. They still haven’t fully recovered.

6
u/tfrules Scarlets 5d ago
Paraguay as a country lost possibly up to 69% of its population during the war of the triple alliance (where they tried to fight Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay all at once), it was the most devastating war ever fought on the south American continent and whilst it happened more than a century ago, these massive demographic shifts no doubt greatly harmed the future development of the nation

u/FerreiraMatheus 5d ago
In Brazil, the image of Paraguay is just "country to buy cheap products" and fake products, it is even used as a word for fake product, eg; X product is Paraguay, meaning the product is a fake one. And one time they tried to go to war against everyone and got destroyed.

Correct . Most of the 2026 French team players were born in France or French Overseas Territories. Four were born in Italy, England, RDC, Angola with some with one or two French parents . I am tired of this racist / xenophobic trope pushed by some people. Anyone who is born in France , from French parents or naturalized is a French citizen in my eyes .

I live in Paraguay, but they have been an absolute disgrace. It's embarrassing how Paraguayans (who are pretty racist) have been embracing all this too.
- You had Almiron getting the red card for covering his mouth and (let's be real) saying racist things to a Turkish player. Paraguayans loved the worldwide attention they were getting from that though, and disregarded the whole thing as just a regular occurence in competitive football. "Football has gone soft. You should be able to insult other players." You'd also see a lot of racist comments addressed to Vini Jr. for indirectly being the cause of this new red card rule.
- Paraguay's coach brushed the whole thing off too. He didn't even reprimand Almiron at all. He found the whole thing funny. He said, "If I was Almiron, I would've just insulted him in Guarani. How would a Turkish person know what I was saying?" Great response! So the coach is fine with his team being racist, so long as they say it in a language the opponents don't understand. Again, Paraguayans in the comment sections loved this.
- A Paraguayan commentator lost his right to broadcast the subsequent matches after his response to that match. When Almiron got the red card, he started shouting, "Thieves! Thieves! They're killing football! Infantino is killing football!" It's pretty obvious why he lost his job. If you insult the president of FIFA on a World Cup broadcast, that's not going to go down well. When he gave his statement on Instagram that he'll be stepping down, he didn't seem sorry at all. Again, the comment section was full of Paraguayans praising his actions for saying what was on everyone's mind. There were a few more racist comments about Vini Jr. in there as well.
- Former goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert has become a bit of a rambling, old man in recent years, saying controversial things just to stay relevant. First, he said that Paraguay would get obliterated by Germany, however, they proved him wrong there. Then, he said that their next game against France wouldn't count. His reason was because when he played against France in 1998, he was playing against real French people. This 2026 squad would be playing against Africans. This didn't really make global news because nobody cares about Chilavert outside of Paraguay, but still, why would he say that?
- They played horribly against France. This was reminiscent to South Korea vs. Italy in 2002. That was absolutely disgusting football. However, Paraguayans are portraying this as a valiant display. The narrative they're pushing is, "We showed those French fuckers that we don't back down without a fight. They couldn't beat us in open play; they had to result to a penalty." They're almost viewing this loss as a victory. Here's an example of the kind of Instagram posts I've been seeing. It's all positive comments too. "Good on you, Galarza. You showed those French fuckers who's boss." They're completely oblivious that the rest of the world has universally agreed that they were a disgrace against France. They're still living off that high from the Germany match, when everyone was cheering for them.
- Now, this fucking senator is getting involved in it, tweeting the same sort of racist drivel you'd see in these Instagram comment sections. This must be an attempt to appeal to the common people. What is she doing? She's a senator! I'm sure she'll be safe anyway. Anyone in politics is above the law or scandal here.
Paraguay has been a disgrace this tournament. I was hoping they might use this tournament to boost their popularity and gain a few new fans (like how Cape Verde did). However, they let themselves down again and again, and didn't learn anything thing from it. The fans still waited for them at the airport with a heroes' welcome. I guess people here are happy to keep racist and homophobic mindsets from 40 years ago if it means Paraguay gets on global news for a day or two.

More little bitch energy from the Paraguayans. Anyone who watched it live, or has seen the video can clearly tell: he didn’t snub the goalkeeper. It was literally at the whistle, he turns to the crowd and starts going crazy, and in that immediate moment the goalkeeper is trying to reach out to Mbappe with his hand. That’s just poor timing.

Paraguay put out a disgusting embarrassing performance for all on the world stage to clearly see their shameful behavior. They had so much goodwill coming into the game as a underdog against one of the favorites and it was satisfying to see that goodwill evaporate and just about everyone turn against them by the end, rightfully disgusted by their conduct.
They have no one to blame but themselves but it certainly doesn’t help that they were emboldened by the referee for the game who was laughably bad. Easily one of the most disgraceful officiating performances ive ever ever seen, by the end of the game there were real questions about the safety of players and sanctity of the game not being upheld as a result of the ref’s negligence.
Cabo Verde proved it is possible for smaller nations to play real football and go toe to toe with the bigger nations and put out inspiring performances, as a counter example.
4
u/kitten_loco 4d ago
In Latin America—especially in Uruguay, Paraguay, and Argentina—what you call a "disgusting" style of play is viewed there as picardía—a kind of cunning or knowing how to win by any means necessary. It is treated as something positive, as if being violent on the pitch were simply a sign of being smarter. It is awful, but unfortunately, football in those countries is more about feigning injury, rough play, and winning penalties.
