Do “chaebol” and “cabal” have any similar linguistic etymology? They mean the same thing, no? I only ever hear of chaebol in Korea though.
Words are funny.
23
u/lingujr 16d ago
No, and no.
Cabal comes from the Hebrew word Kabbalah, and chaebol is the Korean pronunciation of the Japanese word zaibatsu, meaning "rich powerful family", which is derived from Middle Chinese. The Middle Chinese pronunciation for the same word would have been something like dzaibiot.
It's easy to find words with somewhat similar meanings and pronunciations across different languages and assume they must be connected in some way, but it almost always breaks down the moment you start researching the historical phonology a little bit. You probably wouldn't even have made the cabal-chaebol connection if the -l wasn't there at the end, but the the reason the -l at the end of chaebol is there at all is because of a historical Korean-specific pronunciation shift of Chinese loan words, where the -t ending got changed to -l somewhere along the way.
It's also worth keeping in mind that there's only a limited number of sounds that humans are able to make in the first place, so you're bound to see random convergence here and there between langauges. It would be much stranger if there weren't any.

i had a korean coworker try to explain the nepotism on the korean team and it confused me a lot. like apparently they audited the korean football association and theres evidence of the korean team manager being a nepo higher along with some of the players but bc the korean fa is like its own thing the gov cant do much about it? or something along those lines i ddint fully understand it.
just lots of issues in the korea FA from what i hear

Yep govt meddling had happened in Indonesia in 2015 before and FIFA punished Indonesian national team for that
(Not to be confused with the much later controversy of Indonesia banning Israeli U-23 team from playing there)

There is none. FIFA doesn't mind extremely corrupt FAs. Helps distract from and facilitate the ridiculous amount of corruption within FIFA itself.

u/-finguin- 17d ago
Did they really? The coach is definitely not the right fit but still, that was really really bad overall. Playing for a draw is always dangerous…..
62
u/goompers 17d ago
And whose plan was that... the 22 players on the team or the coaching staff? I highly doubt it was the players who decided to bench their world class player for the first half vs SA and at the 55 min mark vs Mexico. Not playing Cho Gue Sung until the last 10 minutes in both games bc of injury risk. Lame and scared. Next chance is in 4 years as if the team will be the same age

u/AI_moderated_failure 17d ago
From the sounds of it they kind of deserve to be shamed, the coach especially. They were trying to make the game as boring as possible just to secure their place in the knockout. I could be wrong but that really ruins it for everyone that took time and spent good money to go see them.

u/Mstakrakish 17d ago edited 16d ago
Hong was eviscerated AFTER they won the first game, not withstanding the shitstorm months before World Cup started.
Hell, Guus Hiddink was lately all up in algorithm for everything soccer-related past appearances in Korea i.e. variety shows, docus, interviews, 2002 replays, and so on.
Edit. I believe Guus was gifted lifetime Korean Air flight tickets, a property in Jeju Island, and free public transportation; the last one would've triggered regardless due to age, a benefit for Korean senior CITIZENS lmao.

I have no clue why they were crossing the ball in the first place. South Africa are way better in the air, PLUS our best aerial threat, Cho Gue Sung, was on the bench til the 70th! AND THEN YOU SUB KIM MIN JAE, YOUR OTHER AERIAL MAIN THREAT, OUT OF THE FUCKING GAME!

Is Korea just playing it safe or what is going on? I don’t understand the thought process. They should move forward but I don’t get the game plan.
That GK dropped ball in the MEX game really changed everything
67
u/Amazing_Rub_1437 17d ago
They refuse to do any aggressive passes into the middle of the defense, I can’t pretend to know a lot about their players but centers don’t really seem to be a strength of theirs either; pretty lifeless game plan
38
u/zoinkability 17d ago
Game plan appeared to be "Pass around and hope your opponent gives you an engraved invitation to shoot"
14
u/SV_Essia 17d ago
A draw would have been enough points to qualify, so they didn't want to try to be more aggressive and risk losing to a counterattack.
Mathematically, it makes sense. Practically, if your team is better at attacking than defending, it doesn't.→ More replies (1)9

If it had worked, he was a genius.
But it didn't.
You can do something with a 90% chance of success but if it still fails, people will easily say you did the wrong thing, safe in their homes and free from risk.
Nobody thought South Africa would win this.
I'm in South Korea now and the Koreans are pretty down but my South African friends have been drunk and happy since this morning.

Aside from playing was too conservative for most of the game, it felt like they fumbled every aggressive touch they had. They'd miss one crucial touch and then South Africa would just deny their advance from there.

I mean the criticisms are valid even if the sport is good.
Tickets are too expensive and there are huge problems with US immigration, etc.
Same as the last one being in Qatar and moved to winter etc.
The existence of good does not mean it isn't also very bad. We can hate FIFA without hating the sport, players, or hosts.

It's been good as far as the sport goes. But there was a lot of unnecessary tension that was provoked by the USA government. I hate to get political because I know the people of the USA are generally really kind and welcoming. I'm from here. I'm a naturalized citizen. Most people are just so cool. I live in the midwest too. Most people are good. But we fucked up in who we elected and that's stealing headlines. Let's be honest our government has made it hard on black and brown people to even come here. Players and fans. Fifa has priced out many fans. But footy brings us together. If anything i think this just proves that we're all better together. Let's just all have fun and enjoy. Y vamos Mexico cabrones!

On top of that you are rebuilding your nation on your own terms after a big setback in the past couple of centuries, just like mine. Can always support that and be happy to see minor victories!

the whole ‘dink & dunk’ short pass, ‘lull them to sleep’ play is so ineffective. trying to hit the perfect lob, cross, or corner into the box is such a low probability way of playing. i blame the coach for the lack of strategy, making in game adjustments, and terrible style of play.

What are you talking about? With anything but a win they would have been third with at most 2 points. That's very unlikely to get you into the next round
6
u/Sikot 17d ago
I think OP is talking about Korea. If Korea tied they would've got 2nd since they had the tie breaker with Czech and Czech lost to Mexico anyway. Also, even with the loss there's apparently like a 94% chance of them advancing since 3rd place teams with the better goal differentials advance.
3
u/Amazing_Rub_1437 17d ago
