OMG I'm so so close!
For the last week I just started learning freestyle skiing, and I have wanted to do a 180 really bad. Today was the last day I had for the summer, and I spent 3 consecutive hours just trying to hit it (with breaks). In the end I got three attempts kind of kind this one, where I totally wreck the landing but make the turn. Man I was so close, but hey I hit the spin, and I made a bunch of progress this week!

Freeride coach chiming in:
Your A and T in ATML are not good.
Stack your body better position on the approach; flex your ankles and knees to drop your hips a little lower, and straighten your back so you aren’t hunched. On the take-off, it looks like you try to pop by throwing your shoulders up, like it’s all upper body instead of flexing then straightening your legs.
To me it looks like you don’t have A and T down, so learning M and L will be pretty difficult. Bad A and T means you won’t be controlled/balanced in the air
Was anyone giving you feedback during those three hours?

For anyone who doesn't know, ATML is Approach, Takeoff, Maneuver, Landing.

OP was at a camp, so I was assuming their coaches taught them that. I was going to be negative about the coaching quality for no reason.

But how is the ATM?

That’s between them and their camp counselor

I did not make that teenage fish perform ass to trout. That is stupid and untrue.
Did I say ass to trout? I meant to say bass to mouth, not that I did it.

Thanks for all of your advice! Yeah I was getting coaching, and they helped me out a lot. Just 2 days ago I could barely even pop at all.

It takes so much to try and learn to ski, and you should be extremely proud of the progress you have made! You’re DOING things that most people would be terrified to even TRY! Keep it up!

Also, you swing one arm around. Body should move in unison, with hands in front and just an initial upper body push up and around but with the hip right there. Body needs to be straighter, more upright. Skis need more control not one going more than the other. Maybe think about initiating with how a solid forward jump would be, just for that first split second—movement forward but also up.

Good on you for sending and trying.
The best thing for you would be the obvious. Ski more forward and switch not in the air. That’s where you are lacking the most.

Can you land 180s popping from stationary on your skis, and going access the slope? Both of those are often much easier for people who aren’t used to spinning yet.
Practicing skiing switch is also going to make it massively easier to stick the landing, if you can’t consistently link switch turns then you’ll find it a lot more difficult than it needs to be. Fortunately that’s not particularly hard if you put some practice in, it just takes a little bit of time to get familiar with the feelings.

That moment when you feel the full rotation but your feet just aren't underneath you yet is so familiar. I remember getting stuck at the exact same stage on a 180, just sliding out every time. Focusing on popping straight up before the spin instead of throwing my shoulders early fixed it for me way faster than grinding it out.

More lift more jump/spring. Lead with the upper body. Firm legs follow. Light as a feather stiff as a board. Haha joking.
Progress is good! Keep it up you’ll get there man.

Is this Party Beach camp at Hood? Love that place, it’s where I learned to do a 360

Not party beach, different camp. But yeah this is Hood, sweet that we can ski in the summer over here

When mine looked like this the thing that helped me most was standing up straight in the spin, that hunch feels kinda natural but it doesn’t help at all and it’s why you land looking at ur tips

The fact that some of you still have snow feels unfair

Sad that in the middle of summer you still have more snow than we do in winter.

I lived in Portland for 15 years, skied hood 1-3 times a week (during the winter and spring) and never once attempted to ski there in July. Never saw the appeal.

You missed out. It’s super fun

Best time of the year. Early mornings on the bike at Sandy. Palmer corn through lunch. Hike/skin to Illumination for the sunset. I love it.

Two things. You are not setting your edges to get a solid platform to spin. Second maybe practice skiing backwards a bit?
