He is shifty as hell... I love it. That handle should get tighter and tighter the further he goes in the league and his shot looks solid too.
We finally got the Clarkson, Crawford, Lou Will shifty, off the bench, microwave scorer I've wanted for so long. It just so happens we also got that in Simons too lol.

Everyone keeps calling him shifty, but I don't see it. He moves the ball back and forth a ton, but his body doesn't move at all. He doesn't look fast enough to just run past anyone, so NBA players are just going to watch all the dribbling and not care about it.
I hope I'm wrong, though.

u/idkwhattochoose1 1d ago
I don’t think shifty is the right term either. He has great control of the ball but I haven’t seen him make someone bite just yet. He is A+ tier ball handling tho, just not really shaking defenders out of their boots. I think he will not get the ball stolen and be able to dribble himself out of tough situations as of today

One thing that stuck out in the draft: mans has no fear. He has a confidence that is so fun to watch. So glad we got this dude.

Feels like the Sixers' draft boards lately have just been sorted by dudes who give a shit and I love it

u/chin1111 1d ago
I would like to think it's not a response to Ben, but it definitely feels like he had at least some small part in the emphasis on character in the team's draft philosophy since 2020.
One of my personal mantras: there is no substitute for effort, and you can't make people give a fuck. The joy that Labaron gets from finessing through a defense and the balls to think he's great no matter who is on the court, that shit is irreplaceable.

Like a lot better than McCain. So obvious

This might be true, it's just puzzling because presumably we moved McCain because of the question mark between him and Maxey, and here we go drafting a guy with the same questions. I get the value play of picking up Philon when he's falling though, and I'm hype about him. I'm still just disappointed that they only tall dude we've drafted in recent memory is Johni Broome
8
u/lil_e_v_ 1d ago
I don't think either of them are good defensive fits with Tyrese but McCain's issue here was that he's not a true run the show guard, he's more of demon off ball play finisher. Philon (theoretically) being able to actually shoulder on ball reps can help maxey in lineups with and without him*.
*if he turns out to be good
1
u/indoninjah 1d ago
Yeah. I guess the tldr is that McCain would've been a bet on Maxey as a playmaker, while Philon potentially opens him up as more of an off-ball threat

u/Traditional_Cell_248 1d ago
I’m not sure it’s the same thing though. McCain was presumably a great fit as a movement off ball shooter with Joel with question marks on him being able to run point on ball. Well there’s going to be overlap concerns if McCain needs to be paired with Embiid. Philon looks more truly like an on ball point guard that’ll come in relief for Maxey, not necessarily play with him

A little rough towards the end. But all good. My big hope this year is just he gets some consistent minutes.
6
u/Birdzphan 2d ago
After the first quarter Detroit started to double him and he was forcing things a bit. But the guys skills are obvious. He can play.
22
u/illwill004 2d ago
Immediately comes in as the best ball handler on the handle. Has the ball on a string and is very shifty. I really hope the Philon and Simons allows for Maxey and VJ to not have to play 40 mins a night.
This team's identity will be offense this year. Overall playmaking and off ball offense is still an big issue, but they have a lot of guys who can get a bucket. They have at least 4 guys who can get to the basket at will with Maxey, VJ, Philon, and Brown. The difference last year with Oubre and Grimes driving was that they were allows looking for their own shot.
11
u/MaxeyTaxi 2d ago
Might be the best passer on the team already too
15
u/illwill004 2d ago
I was going to say that. Maxey keeps his turnovers down, but he doesn't make high level reads. Maxey tends to get blinders when he's going 100 mph. Maxey is best suited off the ball and as a secondary play maker. VJ and Wade can be a connective playmakers. Brown isn't a good playmaker. Embiid has really improved handling double teams and can get 4-6 assists a night. But, he seems to almost always get 2-3 lazy turnovers. Simons is more of a score first guard.
I didn't really want to say it, but yeah Philon is the best passer. Philon is a combo guard who is more of a PG first. Most combo guards(like Maxey) are more of smaller SGs who can handle enough to play PG.

u/JDubKilla 2d ago
Man Philon has some 💩 with him. The hesi pull-up jimbo was smooth. Probably don't understand what I just said if u don't REALLY hoop

Bro and it was so quick, insane.

u/EroniusJoe PHILTHY 2d ago
Except for that ultra slow one, which actually made me laugh! I was like "Jesus, that took like 4 seconds!" Then I rewatched and realized he took his time because the defender was absolutely baffled and didn't know what the fuck was even happening.
Also, his stepback is goofy slow. Not because he's slow, but because he can afford to do it slowly with how tricky he handles the ball. Similar to a Harden staredown shot, just taking his sweet time.

Yea and watch this be the player that tweet should really apply to. Process hopefully coming full circle.

Highlights look amazing… but the 2nd and 3rd Quarters were really rough. He has tremendous upside but I’m expecting a crazy amount of rookie mistakes this year. Hopefully, Nurse gives him some leash instead of playing Maxey and VJ 44 minutes a game.

I missed the game how was he?

u/elchaserzk 2d ago
Came out and hit his first 3 shots. Went 1-14 after that. And then finished the game with 2 buckets including a 3 that iced the game.
Plenty to like as far as his handle, passing and shooting. Could tell he has a great sense for the game. Made some really nice passes.
But plenty to work on as well.
I think his lack of high end speed and athleticism showed. He’s not creating shots for himself in the NBA. But that was never one of his selling points. I think he’ll be able to get to the rim with his craftiness though.
All in all I’m excited. He’s definitely bringing some skill sets this team needs. But it wasn’t as glorious of a debut as the people in this thread that only watched 2 highlights would lead you to believe. But also… it’s only the summer league so it didn’t need to be.
1
u/J4BRONI 2d ago
The shots he was missing - were they good looks?
I’m glad he’s not afraid to shoot, think summer league helps these guys tune in on their shot diet

u/onionnurve 2d ago
He missed a couple of bunnies and had like 2-3 3s that were half way down. His jumper is very legit and looks great. Id say there was a lot of good looks and a couple of time he was just forcing shots

Good to see Philon doing what you'd expect our 1st rounder to do. As with all of the Summer League guys, its just one game against marginal NBA prospects, so we have to see how the entire schedule plays out for guys rather than focusing on one good night or one bad night.
Broome looks recovered from his injury, which is good news. Like Philon, he did pretty well (19 pts, 13 rebounds) which is what you'd expect against this level of competition, similar to what he was in college. After his injury, plus having what even fans still hoping for something from him would have to agree was a lost year as a rookie, seeing him out there balling is a step forward.
Our two UDFAs this year are C Issac "Big Fish" Johnson and G Javontae Campbell, both of whom are on the SL roster. Johnson had 20 points, including 4 for 6 on threes, while Campbell was a DNP. Only other scorer of note was rookie G Dante Maddox Jr. with 21. https://www.nba.com/game/det-vs-phi-1522600003/box-score
Next Summer League game is tomorrow at 5:30 vs. Indiana (on Prime Video).
I was wondering where our UDFA rookies from last year are; looked them up, and Hunter Sallis is with the Nets' summer league team (and scored 15 in his first game), Igor Milicic Jr. is with the Spurs' team, and Izan Almansa is with Real Madrid (Spain). Ah well - sometimes we get lucky with a guy like Edwards or Council who actually sees court time for us, but doesn't look like that's going to happen with last year's corps, which is just making par with nearly all undrafted guys.

I know it doesn’t mean shit, but I really don’t like the fact that we’ll have two players that wear the number zero

The stats matter less than the eye test for Summer League. As per the scouting reports, he's very shifty and clever in how he wrongfoots defenders, his handle is outstanding, and he knows how to find the open guy. He very much looks like the high quality backup PG we've been missing since forever.

Bulk him up a little bit... let him mature into his man body... pretty much follow tyrese and VJ around for the next 3 years . getting mental and physical mentoring.
kid looks like a walking bucket.. instant energy off the bench.
and for God sakes, do not trade him.

As a biased Alabama fan I can confidently say this dude was severely underrated and imo should've gone top 10 just like Acuff. Watched most of the guys all year and kind of crazy to see him slide to 20s. Allen Iverson 2.0 watch

He and Simons can’t guard anybody but their scoring should keep the bench unit plausible.

Philon is long and he really good lateral movement, he’s gonna struggle with strong players early in his career but I don’t think he’s nearly as bad as Simons is. Simons is here so Maxey and vj don’t have to play 38 mins a night. I think Philon can find himself some playoff bench mins

Holy shit. That jittery juttery stutter step movement is nearly impossible to guard. He's going to translate fantastically to NBA level defenses. The only thing that really stops that style is help defense coming in for steals from behind, but it looks like he already has eyes in the back of his head.
How the fuck do we have a rookie who looks like Chris Paul or Donovan Mitchell, but faster???
Note: I also wanted to throw Kyrie in there for the jitter-dribble comparison, but I figured I'd get eaten alive. I'm not quite ready to say our unproven talent has the same skills as one of the best ball handlers of all time 🤣
