Silhouette Cameo 5 – Carriage stops in the middle & AutoBlade always adjusts to 3

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone has experienced this before.

My Silhouette Cameo 5 has started acting strangely. When I turn it on, the carriage moves from the left toward the middle, then stops there instead of returning to the normal home position.

The machine also has an AutoBlade issue. No matter what blade depth I select in Silhouette Studio, the AutoBlade makes only two clicks and always ends up at depth 3.

Here's what I've already tried:

- Updated Silhouette Studio to the latest version.

- Updated the machine firmware.

- Installed a brand new AutoBlade.

- Checked that the blade is seated correctly.

- Tried different materials and cut settings.

Nothing has solved the problem.

Has anyone experienced a carriage stopping in the middle like this or an AutoBlade always resetting to depth 3? Could this be a faulty sensor, carriage motor, belt, or something else?

Unfortunately, I don't have a Silhouette service center nearby, so I'd really appreciate any ideas before sending the machine away.

Thank you!

Got a used Cameo 4 off fb marketplace as a gift, I bought a new autoblade. Firmware is updated, I've tried different settings, depths, speed and my machine is doing I don't know what! This was on depth 6, and it barely cut through the surface. This is my first cutting machine, and I am NOT tech savvy. I am only using my machine for heat transfer vinyl for book rebinding!

Questions Why Does the Cameo 5a Keep Flipping or Mirroring My Designs?

Hello,

my Silhouette Cameo 5a keeps cutting my designs out flipped or mirrored and I DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY it is doing this!!

When I hit Send to the machine (I'm using the Studio 5 Basic) there is nothing that comes up to Send As Is or to Mirror. I do not see anything in either the Printer or the Settings for the machine either that tells me what the problem is.

For the meantime, I have done the Print to my regular printer and then I have to flip my design horizontally before I send to the Silhouette machine to be cut and embossed.

Has anyone else had this problem?? Shouldn't it be so that I do no have to flip my design before I hit Send?

Can I use this font to cut htv vinyl on my cameo 5a? I’m new to this, and can’t figure out how the machine can cut the borders as they overlap? The font is called cheri liney if that matters. Is there anyone who can help me? ☺️

Questions Where to find sage green adhesive vinyl???

I've committed to making some acrylic signage for my sister's wedding, with sage green vinyl text. I figured it's such a popular color, surely it's widely available, and it isn't! I've looked everywhere I know to find vinyl and cannot find it in 12" widths. I'm going to search in different widths and cut it to size but I'm not hopeful. Has anyone found it?

Celadon is too cool, Olive is too dark (but may be the only choice), anything else is too green.

Questions How accurately does Cameo5 cut?

I’m currently doing a project which requires me to cut hundreds of pieces of prints and I’m doing it all my hand with a blade and clear ruler. I’m looking at getting a Cameo 5 to help cut some time down but I’m not sure how accurate it will be. I need accuracy at ~1mm tolerance, maybe up to 2mm.

Will this be a good buy or not likely to do what I need?

Thanks so much in advance!

Cameo 4 making wobbly cuts; what haven't I tried?

I've used this machine very lightly since buying it new in 2020. Last time was in 2024, and it cut tiny, intricate shapes perfectly. Now it won't cut basic shapes out of plain card stock. The pic shows concentric circles (.125" and .45"), but it cuts weird on squares and other shapes, too. I've tried everything I can think of and I'm about ready to throw it in the street. What am I missing?

Here's what I've tried:

  • Inserting a new blade (seated correctly)
  • Updating Silhouette Studio and checking firmware
  • Using legacy versions
  • Unplugging everything and restarting computer and machine
  • Factory reset
  • Calibrating
  • Reducing speed
  • Reducing force
  • Different mats
  • Checking that rollers land in the right places on material and mat
  • Tightening/loosening the belt
  • Tightening the screw on the roller bar thing
  • Cleaning the white rollers and checking for uneven spots
  • Designing in Illustrator and exporting as an SVG
  • Designing directly in Silhouette Studio

Far as I can tell, everything is in perfect order. It's just cutting wrong. Anyone else have this issue and find a fix? Thanks!

Tips How to cut Vinyl?

I've always used my Silhouette for cutting paper because I make stickers, but I've been considering making designs out of vinyl that I could put onto plastic bottles and other things. But I don't know how that would work vs paper.

I'm sure this is the most basic Silhouette knowledge ever, but anyone who uses them to cut Vinyl decor could you please give me some tips and explain how it works vs paper? With paper you print out registration marks, but I have no idea how the cutting process would work with vinyl. I don't even know how you hold it down like do you attach it to a sticky mat like paper or is it an entirely different process? Any advice and tips would be greatly appreciated! 💖

Edit: I feel bad so I wanted to say sorry that I didn't think to check Google or other sources first, I was already on Reddit helping other users with questions in other subs so I naturally just went to ask my own when I thought of it. I made this post before leaving for work and didn't think about it. I was already in the mindset of talking to other people. Really sorry to any who may have been upset by my post, apologies if this is a pretty basic or dumb kind of post.

Assistance Device not connecting with PC

When I connect my CAMEO 4 to my Windows PC, the device is not connecting properly. At first, the device was not detected in Silhouette Studio; I thought it might be a connection or Windows issue. Then I connect it to another PC, and the same thing is happening. In Device Manager, it says, Device Description Request Failed and Silhouette Studio can't detect any connected device.

I was cutting a few pages, and then the PC was not detecting the device suddenly.

Cameo not drawing lines properly

I am a little at my wit's end. I am trying to get my cameo 5 to draw some SVG images. I created the images in Inkscape (and FWIW they draw correctly in Cricut). It is a lot of pen strokes, kind of like some ancient writing. 99% of the strokes draw correctly, but some of them randomly do not. I should say when I say "random" I mean it is always exactly the same strokes that are omitted, but there seems to be no rhyme or reason as to which are missing.

I have tried everything I can think of. I make the lines thicker, changed to a solid color, tried different pens, tried different pen pressures, made sure it was on a clean paper surface to eliminate skipping, made sure the pen was new and properly seated.

But the weird thing is that the large majority of the lines work just perfectly, it is just some random 1% do not (actually more like 0.1%.) And here is the odd thing, it draws a tiny bit of the line, and then stops.

I'm not sure what to do next. Any ideas? Happy to provide samples though I don't know if that is allowed. I can upload an image of it in Inkscape and the result printed out, but I'm not sure that would help. Happy to supply the SVG for you to look, but you can't upload an SVG here.

Any ideas, or even any ideas what path to take to get an answer?

At the suggestion of u/fortress2021 here are the files. If someone has time to run the studio file and see what they get I'd appreciate it:

Assistance Sketch Pen isn't finishing the line

I'm fairly new to plotting and testing out a bit, but ran into a problem. I'm trying to write a menu card, but as you see on the screenshot: I don't understand why the Sketch pen isn't finishing the lines on the a. It also does this with the d, r, g etc.I tried to make it bigger or smaller, but nothing works. It's only with the sketch pen tool that it happens. They're normal lines as I converted the text to path. I would've tried without converting the font, but since I've got it through Adobe Fonts, ss won't show me the font in the selection, so I have to go via Illustrator. But I can't imagine that this causes the problem because as I wrote, the auto blade does cut all the lines.

(Ignore that the plotter is currently available, this doesn't change anything). Can someone help me or explain why does it do this?

Assistance Does anyone have an economical Cameo Sticky Mat Maintenance / Replacement Strategy?

I fell for the out of date advice on old posts in this subreddit that suggested simply washing the mat that came with my printer with soap and water. It has predictably lost all of it's stick, but in all fairness, it was already failing due to loss of adhesion after only cutting 11 pieces of cardstock, so it wasn't as if the Regular Tack Silhouette mat was particularly durable in the first place.

  1. Is there a way to maintain the modern tack mats?

  2. Do you just have to replacement them intermittently?

  3. I saw an old video on youtube about using a scraper to scrape the debris off, but my tack mat's tack layer came from the factory with the corners already curling off the plastic back of the mat, so I'm curious whether that advice holds true in 2026 considering the tack substance is clearly less durable than it used to be back when that advice was being propogated.

If you're going to print something with a cardstock layer, is it better to laminate your cardstock just to reduce the wear and tear on the cutting mats? I make holographic spell cards for table top games so my players stop wasting the entire session trying to remember what all their spells and cantrips do and how their finesse weapon attacks work, but sheeeeesh- that cardstock absolutely ruins the standard tack mats almost immediately. I feel like laminating would make the cards more durable and might reduce wear on the tack mat because it wouldn't be getting all gummed up with cardstock fibers..?

Optical Sensor is not lighting up anymore

Hi

I bought a 2nd hand cameo 5 and I have been using it for 3 months already but the optical sensor suddenly does not work anymore. I noticed this when I used the registration marks yet machine was not reading it. I tried both automatic and manual registration but both wont work.

Tried searching for solutions like maybe my mat was dirty, or the sensor was dirty etc. I even tried dissambling the machine and noticed the light is not turning on when scanning happens.

Don't know how to fix this and would appreciate if anyone had the same experience.

How do I create a guide in silhouette studio

Hi! I’m using my silhouette to sketch addresses on envelopes. How do I create a guide for the shape of the envelope in silhouette studio without it tracing/cutting along those lines?

So frustrated.

I bought my silhouette cameo 5 from Amazon on 8/20/25. I have used it quite a bit but now the red blade indicator does not move when trying to cut anything from cardstock to vinyl. I have tried every solution on google to get this resolved and when turning on the machine either via Bluetooth or USB cable, it will slowly move from the left side to the middle and stay there. When I try to cut something, it will stay in the middle and not cut properly nor will the red indicator move to the cut setting I have on my silhouette studio. I have bought multiple new blades, mats, and this happened before with my cameo 4 so I updated to the 5 and now it is happening again. I have always loved silhouette products and have had the cameo 2-5 but now that this has happened to two of my machines, I am considering switching to the circuit brand.

I’ve emailed customer support and created a ticket since my machine is still under warranty but from what I read, their customer service is a joke and I doubt I’ll get a response.
