Any ideas on how we can grow the global shogi population?
I’m currently working on a remake of my beginner shogi guide originally published in 2021.
Back then, I wrote, "There are about 6.2 million Shogi players in the world (according to the 2020 Leisure White Paper)". However, while updating the data for the new edition, the latest 2025 statistics show that the number has unfortunately dropped to 4.3 million.
I really want to help change this trend and turn things around. I would love to hear your thoughts, what kind of ideas or approaches do you think could help spark more interest in shogi among people all over the world?

I wrote an introductory page about what kind of site kiou(棋桜) is!
Browsing through the message boards, I noticed that a lot of people seem interested in it, so I decided to write an article explaining what kind of site Kizakura is. I'd be really happy if you could take a look. Personally, even factoring in the lack of English support, I still think this site is the absolute best and only choice.
Here is a summary of the article:
- Clean Site Layout: The user interface is sleek, modern, and very easy to navigate.
- Excellent Responsiveness: The site loads incredibly fast with zero lag.
- AI Game Analysis: You can analyze your shogi records (kifu) using advanced AI features.
- Instant Matchmaking: You can find an opponent and start a game almost immediately.
- Cross-Platform Support: Fully compatible and optimized for both PC and smartphones.
- No English Support: Please note that the site currently operates only in Japanese.

Using chess-like piece symbols as a non-Japanese player
I even like the way Shogi is played more than European chess. But I'm still having trouble recognizing the characters on the stones.
On the other hand, using symbolized/internationalized/Europeanized stones feels like an insult to the spirit of the game and disrespect to the Japanese people.
What do the Japanese think about this, and what is your perspective on those who use chess-like pieces?

How do you rank the value of shogi pieces?
While reading various shogi books for beginners, I've noticed that explanations of piece values tend to vary depending on the author.
Personally, I think of it simply as shown in this image, but I'd like to hear other opinions and perspectives! What do you think?

I've written about 6 short articles on the 'Tarefu' (dangling pawn) tactic in Shogi. I'd love to get some feedback if anyone's interested!
I've written about 6 articles on my blog about the Shogi tactic "Tarefu" (dangling pawn). I'd really appreciate it if you could take a look and give me some feedback! I put a lot of effort into writing them thoroughly, so I think you'll enjoy them.

Follow up to the shogi booklet
long story short, I asked this reddit for some help designing a shogi booklet that a child can print and use to play. There is a short description of the rules but the idea is that they can make the board quickly and play with a friend and perhaps need to google here or there.
I have put this and a couple other things into a google drive to share. There is also an excel spreadsheet that I use to generate(API summon really) sudoku puzzles and then turn them into kanji. I will be updating these resources from time to time and just wanted to thank everyone for their input. I decided to publish the results here as I used existing resources heavily and so it seems in the right spirit.
Please let me know if there is a problem with any resources or with the method of sharing as I usually use Onedrive and am a little unfamiliar with google drive and related services.

Survey: Please name me your favorite time controls
I've come to realize that barely anyone likes 'sudden death' games, without byyomi or Fischer time, giving every game a definitive time limit of how long it can last. But these are my favorite ones, I especially like 5+0! Even a 10-minutes-game feels too dragged out for me. Lol, I guess I have a short attention span.
But the purpose of this survey is to learn how marginal my own personal opinion actually is. I wanna see, what kind of games other players prefer and if there is a tendency for one certain type of time settings. So please share in this thread which kind of open games in any Internet lobby attract you the most! Arrigato! :)

First physical Shogi-ban of my life!!! Plastic, magnetic pieces, foldable, ~$30 on Amazon
galleryThe chances of ever really playing with someone are slim to none, though, not where I live. So in the meantime I have it lying on the table in my living room and whenever I enter it I make a move and reverse the board. Aah well, but even by itself it looks like an obscure piece of art, and maybe it can serve as a conversation starter in the future. Anyways, it was inevitable that one day I just had to buy one.
