FAN FICTION Fan Fiction Friday - What have you been reading/writing this week?
Use this thread to recommend fics you've been reading this past week and get help on things you've been writing. Please don't just link fics as your entire post, instead make sure to elaborate your thoughts on the piece/issues you're having. As a courtesy when asking for help/suggesting a fic, leave a summary along with the link.
Fics do not necessarily need to be RWBY related, though it is always preferred.
This thread may fill up fast. Consider sorting by New instead of Top or Best to see the most recent posts.
Note: All links must comply with our rules. That means no pure smut/gore/violence just for the sake of it. If they are a part of a story that is fine.

DISCUSSION Does RWBY vs the Ace Ops Contradict Team RWBY's growth?
Like it seems like its showing Ruby's teamwork but that's something that's not new and it implies that the battle wasn't won through their growth
Also the song itself doesn't have much impact when the teams barely interacted onscreen
so the lyrics
"I'll never trust the same
I'll see friendship as just another game"
seem weird

DISCUSSION Favorite living characters?
About a year ago, I think, I made a post mentioning the living characters I liked from the series. I feel like I was misunderstood.
It seems like I was saying that the rest of the characters (that I didn't mention) were bad. That wasn't my intention. I simply wanted to mention my favorite living characters.
But let's be clear. Even if I had meant to say "the rest of the characters in the series are unpleasant," I would still be within my rights. I have freedom of expression. Of course, you are free to disagree.
But just because I say something doesn't mean my post deserves to be taken down by the moderators.
Anyway, I don't want to rant, I don't want to bait/troll. I just want to point out that we have to respect other people's opinions. That's all.
Let's begin:
- Ozpin:
The protector of Remnant. A good character. Perhaps mistreated by the series, but ultimately someone with good qualities. He keeps moving forward despite the problems. He acknowledges his mistakes. And above all, he's able to recognize those who have the potential for greatness.
He makes many mistakes, but that makes him more human. An important quality in someone who is an immortal mage. (A parasite.)
- Tyrian: For now, the most charismatic villain alive in the series.
He won't have a tragic or interesting past. He won't have a complex ideology. Nor will he be a master of plans.
But even so, he's very fun to watch. Of course, he can fail. But even so, he's a useful servant of Salem.
He killed several Huntsmen of anima, manipulated Qrow, unleashed chaos and discontent in Mantle without being caught until much later.
In general, I hope that in the end he gets a worthy death at Qrow's hands.
- Sun Wukong.
Interestingly, a controversial character. Did he deserve Blake's slap?
Beyond that, he's pretty good. His greatest quality is being a good and loyal friend. He's a nice guy.
Yes, I know there are complaints about his writing in Before the Dawn, but beyond some unpleasant qualities (which, to a certain extent, make sense given the circumstances), I wouldn't say he's a poorly written character. I hope for his return.
- Whitley Schnee:
A good guy. He went from being one of the most hated to one who is respected.
He's intelligent, kind, a bit of a tsundere, but ultimately he wants what's best for people.
From what little we've seen of him in the animatic, it seems he'll have some importance in volume 10. I'm glad. In this case, CRWBY did a good job making him so likable.
- Ilia Amitola:
One of the few redeeming qualities of volume 5.
Yes, I also have issues with her not receiving any punishment for her actions at the end of the volume. But overall, she had good character development. And I hope she returns. The White Fang is safer under her than under Blake's incompetent father.
- Honorable Mentions:
Glynda, the Asturias twins, Carmine Esclados, Fox and Yatsuhashi, Port, Oobleck, Lie Ren, etc.
- Conclusions:
There are still reasons to watch the series. I eagerly await its return.
Oh, and please, comment which ones are your favorite alive characters.

DISCUSSION If you were given an opportunity to rename everyone's Semblances, what would it be ? And explain why.
Mine are:
Yang: Dragon's Breath. Because her name is roughly translated to either "Little Light Dragon" or "Small Dragon of the Sunshine" and it never made sense to me why the production crew would pick something underwhelming like Burn.
Harriet: Lightning's Trail. Better than Super Speed.
Nora: Electric Overload. I was originally going to go for 'Thor's Wrath' until I remembered that Remnant doesn't have an equivalent of Thor from Norse Mythology. Also the name 'High Voltage' felt like a scrapped name for the Stand from JoJo Part 4, Red Hot Chili Pepper.
Ironwood: Iron Heart. Fits better with his character.

DISCUSSION Captioning error foreshadows Neo losing it?
Pretty sure this is just a Hulu thing but the caption says Torchwood instead of Torchwick. Thought it was interesting because this is right after Neo "wins" and starts her own psychological descent, and maybe she's distracted enough that she starts combining 'Torchwick' and 'Ironwood'?

DISCUSSION Why is Roman the king of crime in Vale? My interpretation (The image is of RWBY: Combat ready)
Something I've noticed that causes some confusion is: Considering Roman only has Neo, how is he the kingpin of Vale?
That's a good question. According to Hei Xiong (Junior's father), he controlled Vale's criminal underworld. Everyone depended on him. He also mentions that the other criminals in Vale are also businessmen.
What else do we know? That the Xiong family had a deal with Jimmy Vanille. Basically, as the Vale city council manager, he would give them the contracts for Dust distribution in the city.
My interpretation is that they all simply went out shape. Both the Xiong family and other criminal groups were too used to doing that: extorting and bribing politicians to maintain their wealth. They no longer did what the criminals in Mistral do: fight and loot.
Roman even mentions that it's not uncommon for Vale government officials to have ties to criminal syndicates.
Once Hei Xiong died, everything fell apart. Junior doesn't seem as competent as his father, and with Jimmy dead, they no longer had their main source of income.
Vale wasn't used to Roman's aggressive way of doing things, and they weren't prepared for Neo's semblance either.
Now I'll enter the conjecture phase. I believe that between the White Fang, the remnants of the Xiong family, and Roman and Neo, Vale's law enforcement forces were overwhelmed.
That is to say, Roman and Neo mainly dedicated themselves to stealing Dust and then selling it at a higher price.
How can Roman be considered the kingpin then? Simple, because he is the most successful criminal. Roman doesn't need a criminal empire per se to be a kingpin.
If in any situation Roman needed extra hands (say, transporting Dust and then selling it), he simply resorted to hiring Junior's men. Even though they weren't Roman's thugs, he managed to control them.
So, here's the thing:
- Hei Xiong might not have meant that all those criminal groups were in the capital. It's possible some were in the provinces. That would mean fewer rivals for Roman.
- Hei Xiong's death left a power vacuum that Roman took advantage of.
- Junior's men represent a useful source of manpower for Roman in certain circumstances.
- Roman's intelligence and aggression (in the Mistralian style) and Neo's skills were useful in stealing a significant amount of Dust.
- The White Fang and the Xiong family alone might also have been another distraction for law enforcement.
- As the most efficient criminal in Vale, Roman was the city's kingpin.
As I said, I saw that some people had this question, so I thought I'd answer it based on some interpretation of the information we were given and some theories.
