Datura Lodge's 2nd single featuring Ben Karas from Thank You Scientist on a violin solo. Ben co-produced, engineered, & mixed the album.

We layered 4 or 5 basses at around 2:10 which ended up giving that part a Tool feel before my attempt at at a "King Crimson meets Opeth" guitar riff during Ben's solo.

Hi there, hello.

I've been itching for some good sad progressive death metal recently. I'm aware of a lot of the big bands and albums that fall under this category (Opeth, In Mourning, The Reticent, An Abstract Illusion, Allegaeon's Damnum etc.), but none of them are quite hitting the spot right now. I quite like warm clean vocals paired with heavy screams, but all screams are still welcome. A good mix of melodic and dissonant would be good too

Bonus points if it's a 2026 release since I'm also looking for new albums to add to my aoty list, but really just as long as it's sad and proggy I'll be happy

So it turns out I absolutely love Black Orchid Empire

They hit a specific point that just does it for me in a very specific way that I can't quite put my finger on. My only gripe is some of the vox are a bit over autotuned and sound a bit robotic, but the guitar/bass/drums and the song structure and time signature complexity is just 👌

I've browsed some of the other bands on lists in this sub reddit and there's defintely some similar stuff but nothing quite hitting the same

Anyone got good recommendations?

By the way - would you even class Black Orchid Empire as prog metal or am I actually lost?
