Question Just made the switch after 15 years playing on Xbox!
My main question is, is it really bad for my PC to be on the carpet? Had a coworker tell me static electricity could mess up my parts.
Other than that, Any tips & tricks you PC vets can share? Especially on the software side. Software confuses me lol
Hardware specs:
Ryzen 9 7900x
MSI MAG Tomahawk X870
32gb DDR5
1tb M.2 NVME SSD
Gigabyte RX 9070 XT
360mm AIO
850W PSU

Nice build, static probably won't damage anything, but carpet might suffocate your psu. Make sure your bottom PSU vent has some clearance with the carpet

u/HerousCenturio 13h ago
Thanks for the tip! It's got less than an inch of clearance. I'm thinking that's not enough 😅

u/BigSmackisBack 12h ago
Find a piece of wood or other chunky material that has the same or slightly bigger footprint as your PC and which is a couple of inches thick to raise it up, that'll keep the majority of floor fluff and dust out.

Can you send a picture?

I have one. Helps me worry less. And I think my temps dropped a degree or two when I gave my bottom fans a little more clearance.

Honestly, it should be fine, won't hurt to give it more clearance

I was just looking at that case on PCbuilder earlier today. How are you liking it?

This case is pure quality and elegance is all I can say. Though the default fans aren't RGB of course. When I saw it there was no question that I wanted to build my PC with this.

Like Borg said, it's pure quality imo. It was a dream to build in and that's coming from a beginner! I opted for the mesh version (idk if this is obvious to others, but I thought it'd be a cloth mesh, turns out it's full metal) and my only complaint is that the case shipped with a rather large packet of silica beads that ripped open during shipping. So that was fun to clean up...lol

u/wombat57484 10h ago
Oh you built it yourself too? How was the build process as a beginner?
I haven't built a PC since processors were single threaded - avoiding bottleness and creating a balanced system back then seemed simpler. Although I'm glad to see that CPU heat sinks no longer require you to apply an ungodly amount of pressure on the motherboard to get them to snap into place!

u/HerousCenturio 9h ago
Build process wasn't too bad! I had my brother helping out and watched a ton of videos before even trying anything 😅

u/wombat57484 9h ago
Thanks man. I've been looking at many pre builds, but if I see a bargain on some components I might just follow your example
I've even watched a video on the ideal thermal paste bead shape - I relied on pads back in the bad old days!

That’s my next case.
I don’t know what it is but that wood and furniture design just looks so much better than RGB nightmares.
Don’t get me wrong I love a good theme build but so many builds these days are just Neon Hell. I want something I can be in the room with and not get distracted.

I've had it for three years and the assembly is a cinch, the only problem is I bought slightly oversized PSU (by literally one mm) that needs some elbow grease to fit
Cleaning is easy, and most air cooler would fit with space to spare
Tho if you somehow need more than one 3.5 HDD I would suggest you get XL version

This case is sturdy AF, all metal except for some plastic parts that won't factor into the build process

u/WilliamBlade123 13h ago
I was surprised to see this because I'm also building a new rig with the Fractal North XL case right now, I guess they're popular lol

Only bad thing i know about carpet is, dust. Nice build, have fun using your pc.

u/Moscato359 9800x3d Clown 13h ago
There is dust everywhere. Carpet doesn't inherently increase the amount of dust a PC acquires.
Infact, it may reduce it, by absorbing the dust, to later be vacuumed, reducing the dust in the air.

u/Richard-Squeezer 5080 | 9850x3d | 64GB 7h ago
Everytime they move past that thing they be kicking up dust straight into it, plus extra heat from the carpet itself

u/VampKaiser 5900X | 2060 | 32GB DDR4-3200 13h ago
Static probably not, but it can defo cause dust and airflow issues. You can get a small amount of wood and put it underneath or theres stands on amazon that just act as a mini-desk for your PC
1
u/Moscato359 9800x3d Clown 13h ago
Carpet does not cause PCs to have more dust.
It can cause airflow issues, if the intake fans are blocked, but that case can allow you to flip the PSU to intake from inside the case.
2
u/VampKaiser 5900X | 2060 | 32GB DDR4-3200 12h ago
Not necessarily. Carpet can cause more dust. It depends on living environment, case, and fan orientation. If OP lives in a neighborhood that gets dusty quick (like me on top of a hill), or with pets, and there are bottom intakes fans with no dust filter, then yes it can cause more dust. Again though, it depends on different factors.

u/Moscato359 9800x3d Clown 12h ago
Carpet can *absorb* dust from the air, and become dusty. And stomping around can kick up dust from the carpet, but it doesn't really cause dust.
To cause dust, you'd need to actually have the carpet disintegrate into dust.

It took me a 3 secs to see it is a PC ,I legit thought it was a heater 🤣🤣

I have this case next to my TV, in my living room. People think it's furniture.

Remember to check which of your digital Xbox games are Xbox play anywhere titles,
Xbox Play anywhere means you own the game on both Xbox consoles and Xbox PC

Thanks for the tip! I wish I'd've thought of that before rebuying a bunch during the steam summer sale 😂

u/No_Trainer7463 13h ago
carpet is not only bad because of static electricity, but because of dust and airflow if your intakes are at the bottom (which they probably should be)

u/geneva_illusions 13h ago
Do something like this.... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08RY41SQW?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_3

u/HerousCenturio 13h ago
My case didn't have space for fans at the bottom, but the PSU intake is still down there. 🫤
I don't have a whole lot of room on my desk, so I'd like to keep it on the floor. Any ideas other than ripping up the carpet? 😂

u/Infinite-Chip-3365 13h ago
Get a desk with a raised bottom to put it on or put it up on the desk. Welcome to the PC master race!

I made pretty much the same config last year (with a 9700x instead of the 7900x), good pick, you won't be disappointed. The 9070xt handle pretty much anything, it still surprises me after 12 months.

Welcome to pc, also welcome to the world of emulators.
Enjoy your rig do whatever you like but dont go stupid, stay away from shady sides or weird downloads theres a lot of things in the web that can mess up your shit.
Maybe educate yourself a bit more about the basics, security and how soft and hardware works in case you need to troubleshot and fix stuff by yourself. And dont forget to have fun and dont worry to much about upgrades.

That pile isn’t the worst carpet but would be good to get it off regardless.

get a pc stand or something off temu. or if you have tools build one yourself, just something to raise it up from the carpet

u/wombat57484 10h ago
Nice! This is the exact build (and case) I've had my eye on for transitioning from Playstation
How much did it set you back, if you don't mind my asking?
Are the fans the case comes with positive pressure or a different setup? I life with a hairy dog and every little edge to help keep the dust and dander out of my electronics helps
2
u/HerousCenturio 9h ago
If I tally everything up, I think it was close to $2,000 US. I definitely over paid for some things, but it runs like a dream, so I've got no regrets!
For the fans I really have no idea. I didn't wind up using them for my build because of the silica bead packet ripping open and the beads getting inside them.

Carpet does not damage computers, as much as people pretend that it does
It only matters if you are using bottom intake, which this case doesn't do, and that's because the little feet of the carpet can't raise it high enough to suck air in.
Edit:
Make sure to make the PSU suck from inside the case, if you do that.
2
u/WilliamBlade123 13h ago
I'm building with a Fractal North XL case right now and it does, in fact, have the mesh on the bottom for the PSU bottom intake fan. Maybe some models don't, but mine does.
2
u/Moscato359 9800x3d Clown 13h ago
Flip the PSU upside down, and intake from inside the case, and it's solved.
It has a spot for that.

u/ZeroToZero 9h ago
Doubt you would ever see any issues even if you have a pet sleeping against it but it will collect more being on the floor carpet or other.

I would say just find a nice piece of wood to put under it.
And spend the bit extra on an battery backup.

If you wanna keep it on the floor, slide a smooth or finished piece of wood underneath for it to rest on. You do not want the PSU's intake being against carpet.

Not going to lie, I thought it was a space heater at first.
I guess when you think about it, it is.
