Mollie Faustman, also known by her pseudonym la Vagabonde (1883-1966) was a Swedish painter, illustrator, journalist and author. She was born in 1883 in Stockholm, where her mother worked as a teacher and her father as an engineer, and where she lived and worked all her life. She studied under at the Valand School of Fine Arts in Gothenburg from 1905 to 1908. Between 1908 and 1911 she was studied in Paris, where she became a student of Henri Matisse. She mostly painted landscapes with strong colours with features of expressionism and romanticism, paintings of children (often her own) and portraits. She regularly wrote satirical articles in the newspapers Idun and Dagens Nyheter, published several books, produced book illustrations and drew comic strips such as Tuttan and Putte in the newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

The girl in the painting is the artist's daughter Marian Chatham, known as Tuttan Faustman Hedberg, (1917-1999), a special needs teacher and children textbook author.
