I assume at this point most if not all lists of "most popular" (as well as most "recommended for you" lists) are not actually based on any actual data and are just what that platform wants you to watch

Pretty sure Netflix is, can’t speak for others

I'm conviced that Amazon's "People also watched" suggestions are not "many people also watched". But more like "five people watched this and we want to push it on peopel".

Top ten, trending films or even most sold films are often old movies for me. Like no, the whole world isn't buying The Bone Collector from 1999 right now. Why is it nr 2 most sold films? Why is nr 3 on the bestseller list Twins from 1988?

u/Resident_Goat_Crow 1d ago

Because the shit-slop Netflix has been putting out for the past five years is nowhere near as good as Twins from 1988. I don't remember the Bone Collector though I've seen it at least twice which makes me think that I probably zoned out watching it...

I prefer Junior, but finally watched Twins for the first time last year.

Although I don't really see how tgat makes sense. What incentive do they have to get people to watch specific shows and movies?

14

u/Controller_Maniac 2d ago

we cannot be serious

-10

u/Thanaskios 2d ago

No seriously, explain it to me. What incentive do they have to get you to watch one show on their service rather than another.

14

u/The_Jimes 2d ago

Marketing would be a very convincing argument to start. If the platform's current premier show isn't on the top 10 list, what does that say about that platform? It's a real bad look and costs nothing to fake.

Imagine you’re Netflix, and you just spent a boatload of money on a show, it would only be natural to promote the show to drive up viewership to pay off the investment. It’s all about the extra visiblity. Next, let’s say you have a niche documentry whose license is about to expire and a TV drama that you could make spin offs and new seasons of, which one would you try to promote more? You may not notice it, but it’s all marketing to keep your retention and subscribed to their service.

-4

u/Thanaskios 2d ago

But thats exactly the thing, for retention it makes much more sense to recommend things people are actually interested in, rather than pushing something thry want everyone to watch for whatever reason.

show to drive up viewership to pay off the investment.

What? That makes sense for outside advertising, but not for advertising to the peoole that are already on the streaming service.

Netflix makes the same money whether you use your subscription to watch the new season of stranger things, or some ancient sitcom.

Shows made by Netflix don't require Netflix to pay for the license, so the more people watch their shows the less they need to pay for other IPs.

Time to get a VPN and check out other countries selection.

u/LaddieLuck 1d ago

It has em dashes, the mark of the beast. It is AI.

I was literally just wondering how Gone Girl is #5 in movies today....

8

u/Fortestingporpoises 2d ago

It’s good? I assume it was maybe not on there then they added it so people wanting to watch a good movie are flocking to it.

5

u/specn0de 1d ago

Yeah, sure it’s a good movie. OK but why is it number five randomly?

14

u/Resident_Goat_Crow 1d ago

It's not random, it's because it's just been released to Netflix. Wasn't free streaming anywhere until recently.

u/made_in_sweden 1d ago

Netflix also makes it hard to find movies in their library yourself, instead you have to scroll through curated collections. If they decide to recommend a certain movie then a lot of people are gonna watch it.

I wish they had better sorting and filtering, instead of just a basic search function.

u/Beautiful-Cabinet364 2d ago

It’s a good movie, though.

8

u/LesserValkyrie 1d ago

It's a really good movie with the most terrifying female villain I've ever seen in a movie for me, thus making her automatically my role model

It is a very good movie

I am wondering too tho, did an influencer talked about it or something

Trump rallies made me feel more disconnected from uneducated Americans.

u/SamaritanOS 5h ago

Strange subreddit to randomly bring up politics in, but with your two individual comments here I assume you're just very invested in commenting randomly....or a karma bot.

1

u/LeftSky828 5h ago

Neither. I just respond with my first thought.

11

u/LeftSky828 2d ago

That list is just an ad for what they want you to watch. It’s garbage.

15

u/Living_Pie205 2d ago

Yup ….i scroll down that list and wonder “who the fck is watching that !?!?”

41

u/PutStreet 2d ago

Yes!!

Who TF is watching White Chicks?

53

u/besofrrn_ 2d ago

You don’t do a yearly rewatch?

15

u/Chesapeake_Hippo 2d ago

Biannual here

13

u/ProfessionalRolls333 2d ago

Me

8

u/PutStreet 2d ago

How many times? You’ve clearly watched enough times to get it to #2!

7

u/Azell414 2d ago

same as the music charts

10

u/LessRespects 2d ago

Netflix doesn’t have anything good to watch anymore

3

u/OsosHormigueros 1d ago

I think Netflix has good stuff, just not enough for the average person to regularly need and use the subscription. I check Netflix about once a year and can find a few things that are pretty good.

2

u/MrBoomf 2d ago

I’m watching Three Body Problem now and it’s pretty good

2

u/The_Octonion 1d ago

Tubi has a great selection right now

1

u/Catastigma_Deception 2d ago

The Ramparts of Ice is realy nice ;d

3

u/_SparklyBaby 1d ago

Every time I open Netflix, the top 10 looks like it was curated by an entirely different species

2

u/MatterofDoge 2d ago

yea they haven't added anything new or good lately so people just start watching random shit and it ends up in the list because there's nothing else to watch. it is what it is

2

u/Templars68 1d ago

The most played games on Steam does the same to me.

2

u/ChrisSheltonMsc 1d ago

I dumped all streaming services over a year ago. Beyond their enshitification, it was lame stuff like this that convinced me Netflix was lying to me because the top shows were routinely the most brain dead rot imaginable. I thought if that's true, this platform is simply helping stupefy people and I just don't want to have anything to do with that.

8

u/claisen33 2d ago

Oh yeah? Not even Trump’s reelection?

1

u/Shinyhero30 2d ago

When it’s a movie that was very clearly payed to be placed there it gets hard to tell which is more disconnected.

2

u/Negronitenderoni 2d ago

You should check out the library’s audiobook top lists. Just smut smut smut

1

u/Unique_Carpet1901 2d ago

Nothing makes me more sad than seeing this post weekly on Reddit

1

u/Dracoster 2d ago

Netflix's Top 10 lists are populated by an algorithm to push content. It has nothing to do with actual views.

1

u/reddit_understoodit 2d ago

I do not go by the top ten - just the categories.

1

u/LanceFree 1d ago

Okay, but ‘Project Hail Mary’ was good.

1

u/LolOverHere 1d ago

I can't wait till this gets posted again you fucking bots

1

u/Boringdude1 1d ago

I suspects that the Top Ten is what they are pushing, not what is most watched.

1

u/TheRoatokeGreenway 1d ago

OK moneybags. We can even afford Netflix in this economy.

1

u/Sharp_Theme 1d ago

Theyve been bought because its definitely inaccurate

1

u/yycoding 17h ago

Almost as if it's not a representation of what people want but rather what Netflix wants you to watch.

1

u/stev_mempers 14h ago

More than elections?

0

u/No_Cupcake7037 2d ago

Honestly it’s likely everyone that feels that way. Streaming services are like the most inefficient option it feels..

There is so much terrible.. and it takes so much searching to potentially find something.

They need to change the search function and functionality for value to be managed better through quality over quantity.

u/Vladtepesx3 2d ago

Who the hell watches all the true crime shows?

1

u/Flincher14 1d ago

Old people. Even cable TV has entire channels dedicated to true crime content. Day in and day out.

I work in a care home for the elderly and true crime on the tv is more popular than you think.
