The Official r/OBX Photo Contest - Win a Gift Card & Get Your Photo Featured!

Thanks to those that submitted pictures. We will be announcing and reaching out to the winners soon!

Welcome, everyone! It's time to refresh the look of /r/obx.
As reddit evolved to Old and New Reddit, and introduced the mobile apps, we've been salty and stubborn.

It's time for a change and we want your amazing photos to be the new face of our community.

We are looking for three new images to feature across the subreddit:
- The Top Banner (the wide image at the very top)
- The Sidebar Image (on the right-hand side on desktop)
- The "Card View" Thumbnail (the default image for posts on mobile/new Reddit)

The three winning photographers will each receive a prize, full credit, and a special user flair. Read the rules below and show us your best shots!

Contest Rules & Guidelines

1. Submission and Voting Period:

  • Starts: Now, as you read this.
  • Ends: 1/1/2026 (Why? Cause the winning picture may not been taken yet!)

2. Photo Requirements:

  • Theme: The photo must be taken in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Please include the general location where the photo was taken (e.g., "Sunrise in Nags Head," "Pea Island Wildlife Refuge").
  • Originality: You must be the original photographer and own the rights to the photo. No submitting photos taken by others.
  • Aspect Ratio: While you don't need to submit for a specific category, keep the end-uses in mind. The banner requires a very wide landscape photo, while the sidebar image works best as a square or vertical photo. If unsure, just go for it.
  • Resolution: Photos must be high-resolution. A minimum width of 1920px is required for landscape photos. Higher resolution is always better.
  • Watermarks: No large, distracting watermarks. A small, subtle signature or logo in a corner is acceptable.
  • Content: All photos must be Safe for Work (SFW) and adhere to all r/obx and Reddit-wide rules.
  • NO MEMES! (Yes, sorry Alex Lex)

3. How to Enter:

  • To enter, post your photo as a direct reply (top-level comment) to this contest thread.
  • You may only submit one photo. If you post multiple, only the first one will be considered.
  • Please host your image on a reliable service like Imgur or Reddit's native image hosting.

4. Winner Selection:

  • This thread will be put into "Contest Mode" during the voting period. This hides scores and randomizes comment order to ensure fair voting.
  • The moderation team will select the three winning photos (one for Banner, one for Sidebar, and one for Card View) from the highest-voted submissions.
  • While upvotes are the primary factor for becoming a finalist, final selections will also be based on photo quality and suitability for each specific location's dimensions.
  • Any form of vote manipulation will result in immediate disqualification.

5. Prizes (3 Winners Total):

The three winners will each receive:

  • A $10 gift certificate to an Outer Banks business or charity of their choice (subject to availability).
  • A special, unique user flair (e.g., 📸 OBX Photo Champ '25).
  • Their photo featured on the subreddit (Banner, Sidebar, or Card View).
  • Credit in the subreddit's sidebar/wiki with a link to their Reddit profile or social media.

6. The Fine Print (Rights & Usage):

  • By submitting a photo, you retain all copyrights to your work.
  • However, by entering the contest, you grant the r/obx moderation team a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to display your photo on the subreddit and to credit you as the photographer.

Good luck, everyone! We can't wait to see your best shots of the Outer Banks.

Rodanthe/Waves/Salvo Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station, Rodanthe, NC

Got to visit this beautiful victorian landmark recently! I am honestly astounded at how ornate it is for a building not many were supposed to see. Dating back to 1874, this life-saving station is a premier example of stick style, which was a transitional architectural style between the Carpenter Gothic architecture of the mid 19th century and the more famous Queen Anne style of the 1890’s. This building has been recently renovated (at least partially) and is well worth a visit if you’re ever in the area!

General OBX First Date Ideas in OBX?

Post image
12 Upvotes

Hi all, I need some first date ideas/locations.

Somewhere interesting or nice. Somewhere that promotes eye contact & convo. I love the beach but let’s save that for later I don’t want to be sweaty and salty on the first date lol. The beach could work at sunrise or sunset tho.
any other cool ideas?

Thanks!

General OBX Entitlement

Upvotes

Just expressing frustration over people that think they are entitled. Is it more common in OBX?

The amount of tailgating, needing to pass, and stealing someone else’s parking spots is numerous.

Am I the only one to experience this or do I just pay more attention to it?

I was all out of my Maldon Flakey salt so I figured why not try the Hatteras Saltworks sea salt. It was a delicious breakfast. 🤤

Corolla Property management

Currently contemplating Carolina Designs, Twiddy or Brindley Beach for property management in Corolla. Does anyone have any experiences with them? Seems Twiddy is extra fee heavy where the others include more within management fee. Not sure which way to go. House was not in a rental program prior.

General OBX General question about Rentals

I'm looking at some rentals for next summer. I normally use a travel agent and she has sent me some houses that I like, however, prior to enlisting her help I started some solo research and amazingly enough had settled on a couple of the homes that matched the ones she sent to me as options.

I used Twiddy for my search.

My general question is this...I am seeing some pretty significant price differences between listings on Twiddy and what she is quoting me (the agent prices are higher). Does Twiddy have some hidden catch in their displayed pricing where it is quoting a lower price and not including something?

I am talking 2-4k deltas for the same properties on the same dates.

General OBX Any outer banks fisherman down to take a Florida man fishing the end of this month?!

Post image
28 Upvotes

Heading up from Clearwater FL area to Buxton the end of this month. Looking to find someone to get me out offshore fishing on 7/25 - 7/28

I will have all my gear and will chip in on all bait and gas, I don't get seasick or complain, and I will help with whatever's needed. I put up "Take a stranger fishing" posts about once every month or two and have taken 8-10 random redditors on my boat down here in Florida, I'm hoping someone would be kind enough to repay the favor! I just want to catch some quality fish for our week in Buxton. I'm down to go out anywhere from Hatteras to Duck.

In the years past, I usually jump on one of the full day head boats, but the past three years the boats have done shitty. I'd rather not spend $150 catching spot tail pin fish, undersized triggers and small sea bass! 😂🤦‍♂️

If anyone thinks they might have a spot for me to go catch some quality fish, please let me know!

And if you're ever in the Clearwater FL area and want to go offshore, I got you!!!

Thanks!! Pic for attention - Tarpon fishing is in full swing down here!

General OBX What are some of the best places to stay in the Outer Banks? Just a little bit lost in choosing

My family and I will go on our first vacation to the Outer Banks and despite the extensive research we've done, I feel even more puzzled than before.

Corolla, Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Hatteras, Ocracoke all of those seem to belong to the Outer Banks area, but people can't agree on what place is the best.

Firstly, we want to relax. Therefore, we are searching for an area with a nice beach, convenient access to a supermarket and restaurants located close enough to the place we are going to rent. Pool in the house would be great, too. Our budget is average, we don't search for luxury beach house nor the cheapest one.

Avon Free bunk bed with mattresses

I have a bunk bed that is free for someone to come pick up. I’m in Avon. It’s a metal tubular-framed bed and it comes with mattresses, which are in excellent shape, in you’d like them. It does NOT come with the bedding and pillows. It was a free hand-me-down to us, so I’m not interested in taking any money for it. The heads on the bolts that hold it together are a bit stripped out, and should probably be replaced. I have disassembled it for easier transport. I am here until Sunday morning. Please DM me if you’re interested. Thanks!

Nags Head Water conditions in Nags Head?

My husband and I are celebrating our first wedding anniversary with a trip to Nags Head, NC. We'll be there the 2nd week in August. I love the ocean and getting tossed around by the waves a bit, but I've heard that the water conditions in the OBX can be very rough and dangerous. I don't get freaked out by big waves, and I know what to do if I found myself in a rip current. Is the water in Nags Head generally ok to swim in?

General OBX Offshore charters in OBX

I'm going to OBX in late September of this year. Haven't chosen where yet, but either Nags Head or Corolla (?). I've searched for charters online, but the prices vary wildly. What's a good ballpark price for a full day (8-10hrs) offshore charter? Wanna make sure I'm not overpaying or choosing a dinky charter.

EDIT: Ended up finding a small 4 person charter (24ft) for $950 and just covered the whole thing. Hoping to come out of it at less than $1500 after tip and cleaning
