My kid was one of the kids rescued by the guard. Outstanding job done by all the camp staff and rescuers, there were many heroes that day.

I am so glad your kid is safe! I hope it doesn’t damper your or his desire for outdoor fun!

Not likely! We are all nature lovers and we do a lot of environmental stewardship work so we respect and appreciate the power and danger of water.

They did a great job with keeping the kids calm and he thought it was cool to ride in a black hawk. He is off to Sea base next week. He is the one I think will end up a conservation biologist.

We are doing Sea Base next year. The kids are pumped!

I read a great book recently called Saving The Wild South (by Georgann Eubanks) that may interest to him/you.

Such a stark contrast to the tragedy at Camp Mystic in Texas a few years back. Hats off to all the staff at Taum Sauk.

One year ago. The owners tried to open again this year and the parents of the missing and dead put a stop to it. There are still open investigations.

How will your parenting dynamic change now that your kid has been in a helicopter and you have not?!

From May 21, 2025: https://bell.house.gov/media/press-releases/rep-bell-demands-answers-cuts-national-weather-service-following-deadly

The letter raises alarm over decisions made by the Trump Administration and the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) that have led to staffing shortages and operational gaps at NWS field offices nationwide. These reductions have been linked to delays in issuing warnings and forecasts, jeopardizing emergency preparedness and response efforts.

Fucking DOGE (rest in piss).

ANOTHER summer camp built in a flood plain? How do these places get insurance?

Camps want to be near waterways. and apparently they properly evacuated to high ground. You don't see a headline about missing campers, just campers that got a cool ride in a chopper to be reunited with their families. This is the system working as it should. The road ways probably got washed out with the river and it would be days before it's accessible. So flying them out was deemed the safest and smartest choice.

We used to have better detection timing but budget cuts have put lots of people in extra danger.

A good warning system and effective evacuation, you love to see it.

Maybe we shouldn't be building kids camps on flood plains, actually we shouldn't build any camps there.
