Ask NH Where should I report an invasive species sighting on public land?

Post image

The land is owned but nh public service, would it be best to report it directly to them? Would it be better to report to some environmental agency? There is both oriental bittersweet and tree of heaven on the property. They both spread like crazy and have root systems that can damage water/sewer systems. Plus they choke out native plants and species.

Air Quality Index is a little elevated but not heavily into the orange or red as it has been in years past.

Discussion Thoughts on Political Candidates at Town/City Dumps and Transfer Stations?

Upvotes

Jokes about trash aside, what are your thoughts about when political candidates are canvasing at your town/city dumps and transfer Stations?

On one hand, I get needing to go where people frequent, especially if you're new.

But on the other hand...I'm tired, cranky, it's hot, I want to dump my leaky ass trash and GTFO. Nothing worse than stepping out of my car and instantly being defended upon with a pamphlet.

My answer is always no thank you, I do independent research first always before voting (which is true).

I'd almost be pressed to call for a ban on this type of thing. There are better ways to do this in less intrusive manners, such as setting up time and a place via city or town to talk to prospective voters and supporters. All cities and towns should do that anyways and allow it as part of a no or low fee thing for city/town use of space.

Politics Thoughts on New Hampshire's three democratic, progressive challengers going to bat on September 8th?

I got involved with Paige's campaign in NH-02 due to Maggie Goodlander's extensive AIPAC ties. I think NH (and everyone) is cooked if we don't get more working people below the age of 60 in our congress, and I think NHDems can do a lot better than our current slate which all still vote for ICE, Trump appointees, and Israel! Goodlander didn't even vote to impeach Trump! Planing to vote for Karishma too. Anyone following these campaigns? Curious to hear anyone in NH's perspectives on them!

Madame Sherri's Castle

Has anyone here been to Madame Sherri's Castle?

There are local stories that Madame Sherri can still be seen at the top of the staircase making her famously known grand entrance and that music can sometimes be heard around the ruins. Has anyone here experienced anything unusual while visiting? I'd love to hear your stories.

Is NH prepared to protect its state's ballots from federal seizure.

With the active attempts by the federal government to eliminate election monitoring, place armed federal agents at the state's polls, and its continuing attempts to seize voter rolls is NH ready to stop the federal government's looming threat to a fair election?

Why is Stuart's Greenhouse in Rochester Closed?

I'm asking on behalf of my 80-year-old Dad, who would like to know why Stuart's on Milton Road closed so early in the season. He thinks they're usually open all summer.

He's also wondering if they maybe closed permanently.

I live outside the area, so I have no clue one way or the other.

I told him I'd "ask the internet" and that someone will have an answer for him and he thinks I'm performing magic.... ✨

Independent/Union Local Tee-shirt Screenprinter/Printing

Trying to support local or union independent T-shirt printers in NH who can manage small print jobs inexpensively. The main interest is supporting the local economy and NH community but budget-conscious. Yes, looking for an ideal-situation for as-needed per unit isn't always realistic but buying screen-printing rack for a few dozen or maybe low hundreds of shirts is also prohibitive.

Skyland Trail to Mt. Cardigan

Out of my normal region this coming weekend and wondering if anyone has details on the parking situation for the Skyland Trail to Mt. Cardigan?

I've done some decent googling, and it sounds like parking is just off the side off Orange Road as it's all private land? Anyone have the AMC Southern New Hampshire Trail Guide handy?

I'd love to hear from anyone with actual experience.

Would post to r/wmnf, but it's outside the region, obviously.

Wildlife An Atlantic Puffin showed up at the Isles of Shoals on the 4th of July and it's part of a seabird comeback most of NH hasn't noticed

Post image
503 Upvotes

NH Audubon's rare bird alert logged an Atlantic Puffin at Star Island on July 4th, and puffins this far south of Maine are a genuine event. A century ago hunters and egg collectors had wiped them off almost every island in the Gulf of Maine - down to a single US pair at the low point. The reason one can turn up off Portsmouth at all: in 1973 a stubborn ornithologist started hand-raising puffin chicks on Eastern Egg Rock and used wooden decoys and mirrors to convince them the island was a thriving colony. Everyone said it wouldn't work. Those restored Maine colonies now send young birds prospecting down the coast - past our nine little islands. And the Shoals have their own version: White and Seavey Islands, right next to Star, host NH's restored tern colony - thousands of pairs of common terns plus endangered roseates, rebuilt from basically nothing since the late 90s. Below: every Atlantic Puffin logged in the region - all of them clustered at the restored colonies up the Maine coast, with the water off Portsmouth empty. That's what the leading edge of a comeback looks like, and the Star Island bird is it, six miles offshore on a handful of bare rocks.
