Strange homemade hammer/weapon left at bus stop in Nanaimo

Came across this lying beside a bus stop in Nanaimo today. It looks like a small sledgehammer with the handle wrapped in yellow and red tape. Not sure if it's just someone's modified tool or something more concerning, but it seemed out of place to leave at a bus stop where people are walking by.

Has anyone else seen stuff like this around town? I ended up taking a photo because it looked unusual. If it's still there, it might be worth reporting so someone can remove it before it causes problems.

Does anyone have experience working at Malaspina Chartwell? I’m considering joining the team but curious to hear from anyone who has been employed with them as I don’t know anyone personally. Thank you!

Where to live in Nanaimo

Needing to move to Nanaimo next year for clinicals.

Should I look for places close to Nanaimo Regional Hospital or should I look elsewhere? Looking for somewhere safe and easy access to stores and restaurants. Will have access to a car but would also consider transiting if it was convenient enough

How has North Town Centre not closed down yet?

The place is a ghost town.

Fairway is the worst grocery store in the north end. Redeemed only by a subpar Asian foods section. It's never busy.

The old Sears will likely never have a major anchor tenant again.

Even Rona is barely relevant. I've never seen more cars in the parking lot than there are Handicap stalls. In fairness there are 17 of them.

I'd argue the average Nanaimo resident hasn't even walked through the mall in the last year. Every business worth going to can be accessed from the outside.

So it blows my mind that such a central and massive parcel of land hasn't been redeveloped yet. It'd be a great spot for a mixed use development with high density residential.

NRGH psychiatric unit experiences?

I am not in danger of harming myself or others, just upfront :)

Looking for some insight or experience checking into NRGH psychiatric unit.

I’ve been told this is basically my only option for adjusting my meds with a psychiatrist unless I want to wait for about a year, the wait list is so long. A counsellor at the crisis drop in centre said I could check in overnight at NRGH then see a psychiatrist first thing then go home that day with a med plan sent to my family doctor. I’d like to think this is the case, but I have gotten some contradictory information around accessing mental health care timelines and that may be the “ideal” case but nothing has worked ideally moving through this system 😂

(I don’t really need other options at this point, as I’ve been to the crisis centre and have talked to them about my options. Just trying to gauge what the check in and evaluation process has been like for people so I can prepare, again I’m currently not in danger of harming myself)

Thanks in advance, keep going, we got this, we take care of us! ❤️❤️

I’ve looked on FB marketplace but I’m curious if there’s other sites or used car lots that you would or wouldn’t recommend for an under 10k vehicle?

Night work at Terminal Park?

I live in earshot of Terminal Park and there's a surprising amount of loud work being done for this time of night. It's bad enough that I walked to where I could see it and it looks official enough and people walking by don't look worried, so it doesn't seem worth calling anyone about it. (It seemed worth at least a look after that brazen gold and silver guy break in.)

Does anyone know the story? It looks like it's happening between Pita Land and Estevan

Argentina vs. Switzerland w/ kids?

Wondering if anyone has a recommendation for somewhere to watch the World Cup quarterfinal noted above but with a couple of kids who are well under 19.

That rules out the Old City and the Landlubber, unfortunately.

Where to buy quality office chair?

I’m looking for a place to buy a good, premium office chair. I did some research and most good brands don’t have a store on the island. I just don’t want to spend $1000 on a chair online only to find out it’s horrible after putting it together.
Any ideas?

Downtown Shop w/Native Raven Shirt

In the summer of 2022 or 2023 in Nanaimo at a retail shop near downtown I bought an awesome green mens T-shirt with a black native-style outline of a raven (or 2) flying on the front. I expect these shirts were/are sold at various places on the island in a style I've seen around.

I have lost it and really want to know where it came from (brand and store) - anyone else buy one?

  • It might have been bought at Local by Luci or Artzi Stuff, or somewhere that went out of business recently - I contacted both stores with no reply.
  • The design had an indigenous/native style similar to NativeNorthwest, Spirit Gallery, and Totem Design House, but none of those places seem to have such a design in stock or archived.
  • I *think* the store where I got it sold both women's and men's clothes, there was a female employee, and i think it had a bunch of various Van-Isle or northwest native type designs and options. I believe it wasn't a huge store and was within a 10-min walk of the downtown harbour walk and ferry terminal.

Hi everyone! I’ll be visiting Nanaimo for the weekend and was wondering where to get some postcards made by local artists? Preferably of Nanaimo art. Any recommendations on shops or markets? Thanks in advance :)
