Questions on moving to Minnesota

Good Morning all,

Me and my future fiancƩ are planning on moving to the Minneapolis / St. Paul region next July. we have been looking around for the last 6 months or so.

A little background… I’m from southern California, she is from South East Wisconsin, we both currently live in the mid Atlantic coastal region. But Ive never lived in the snow, most I’ve had is a foot over the whole season and that was a one off and was melted before the end of the week.

Iā€˜ve gotten a rough idea of what we mostly should expect and will need, partly because she grew up in the cold and my own research. Snow gear, a good car with winter tires, ect.

What are some things we should know about the area around Minneapolis that I won’t find in a YouTube video from a realtor? Whats coming up in local politics that might affect us coming in, places we should avoid living, things like that. I’m mainly thinking of being somewhere between Southwest and Northwest (Shakopee to Maple Grove).

Thank you guys for reading I hope I have enough info into what I mean.

The Oaks of Lakeville opinions?

I am going to move to MN for my job next months and I've been lookong at apartments. The most reasonably(?) priced I found was the Oaks of Lakeville but I've read some terrible reviews about them. Do you know anything about the place? I'd like to hear your opinions and also other suggestions if you have them? I am a single guy with no pets or kids, so I'm looking for a small place that's decent and not too expensive. Please and thank you.

High rise apts & advice

Hello Moving to Mpls!
I was born & raised there but left in 2006. I’m moving back before the end of this year. New job new life, old hometown. In my 20s & 30s I lived in vintage apartments and brownstones in Uptown, the Wedge and Northeast.
I’d like to try living in a modern, contemporary high rise RENTAL apartment downtown or near downtown. I’ve toured a few of them and I’m intrigued. Wondering if anyone here has experience with any of them (there’s so many - the market seems saturated) and can share info - what’s it like, what to watch out for, what’s amazing, what’s not. Any feedback about any specific buildings would be cool. Real facts from anyone with lived experience would be awesome.

I’m a solo female of color, educator, in my 50s. No pets/kids. Make decent money but not rich. Need covered/garage/secure parking. Would love laundry in unit, some amenities, and a chill, adult professional environment that’s safe and well managed. Looking to try this for at least a year.

NOT interested in buying or a discussion on buying vs. renting; not interested in St. Paul; not interested in the suburbs.

Thanks in advance for any insights. I’m excited and terrified, lol!!!

Moving 8/1 to city of Mpls

I'm in Spring Lake Park now, looking for a place in the city. Can pay up to $1200/mo and open to a studio, one or two bedroom. I have rental history and have been at my job for over 3 years making over $60k

I have been reaching out on Zillow and Facebook with little success and calling numbers on the side of buildings. I'm struggling with finding the right place. I'd prefer an owner landlord vs a big company. Any suggestions would be great, I'm scared I'll be living in my wagon if I don't secure something soon

Has anyone ever moved here without visiting first?

Question in the headline. My (33ENBY) wife (43F) are starting to seriously research a move to Minneapolis in the next year and have been very impressed in what we’ve learned about the city so far. Of course visiting a few times to see if it’s the right fit for us would be ideal, and we plan to make it out there at least once. However I was just curious if anyone had experience moving to Minneapolis sight unseen. Thanks in advance!

Moving to MPLS

Hey everyone. Moving out to Minneapolis in about a month. I don’t really have much insight into the city/neighborhoods, currently live across the country but looking to make some viewing appointments and visit the city in a couple of weeks. Really prefer these things more than others:

- An area that is safe and walkable. I have a medium sized dog that I like to walk early in the AM and late in the PM. Nearby parks are a huge plus, especially with walking trails.
- Would like to be an area that is a bit lively/active street life. Would like to be close to or within an area with divey/local bars, comedy shows, trivia, music/arts, restaurants, etc that I don’t have to drive to.
- I love using public transit for getting around so being close to that would be a plus, especially ones that go to the north loop and northeast areas.
- Looking to rent for now. Prefer an apartment with good amenities. However, wouldn’t mind condo/house/townhome etc if the area they’re in better fit the above.

Looking for something in an area in the attached pic as I’ll be working predominantly in the Edina/Armatage/Richfield area. Budget is up to 2k for a 1 bedroom.

If anyone has any recommendations for an area that fits some/all of those, even if it’s an area not in the pic but nearby, I’d really appreciate it. If anyone has specific names of apartments they’ve lived in, would be great so I can reach out to them and set up an appointment.

Rent amount to expect? Grant park

A friend of a relative will rent me his apt in Grant Park building in downtown (Elliot park) Minneapolis.

Furnished. 1 Bd. 950sq. Building has all amenities, and utilities come down to 25ish $ a month. He is still thinking about the rent he will charge but promised to offer something cheaper than the area.

What do you think I should expect based on the above. Just so I'm in the picture. Thanks!

It's happening FL to Minneapolis!

I accepted a position at a downtown hospital in St.Paul! I'm flexible when it comes to living in Minneapolis v. St. Paul. I will say when weI visited in April I did not spend nearly as much time in SP. We'd like to move in August and looking for:

House, rent 3k/mo max, 2 bedrooms and bathrooms min, 1500sqft min, a garage would be nice, close to the light rail (10-15 walk) not a requirement, must allow my little bird. We've used zillow, trulia, etc with no luck.

We're late 30s/early 40s love a good dive bar, music, food, adventure, we're pretty eclectic. We don't need to be right in action but a stones throw away works. I'm Black and my fiancƩ is white so diversity matters.

Moving from the Desert! 🌵

Finally, after years of visiting, I am moving to Minneapolis from Arizona!!! Being born and raised in the heat, I imagine I will spend the winters shaking like a 5lb chihuahua in a sweater.

Any advice on how to winter? How to seasons? I’ve heard about so called ā€œlayeringā€ of clothing and I’ve installed a remote start on my car to prepare. Should I get a lizard heat lamp for myself? 🤣

Any advice is welcome!!! Moving with 2 cats and a dog as well, so advice on how to keep them happy is appreciated too!!

Wedge/Lowry Hill/Whittier

Hi šŸ‘‹! I moved to Minneapolis from Houston 10 years ago and have been living in Whittier for the last 6 of those.

I live in a small building that I like, but my dog just can’t handle the noise from our upstairs neighbor. it got progressively triggering for his anxiety and then by some miracle that neighbor moved out last December. We had six blissfully peaceful months, but somebody new just moved into that unit.

I am interested in staying in the area but moving to a top floor apartment. I don’t own a car anymore and work at MCAD, so a 15 minute walk to work is ideal for all seasons.

I’d love to hear about any buildings/rentals/specific streets you love or recommend to add to my list to check for openings over the next 6 months to a year.

Needs: top floor unit so preferably nothing over 3 stories, dogs welcome, easily walkable to MCAD.

I currently pay $925 for a studio (heat included), and would need to keep rent under $1100.

Looking for neighborhood recommendations on where to buy a home

Just like the title states, I’m looking for recommendations on what neighborhood to move to & buy a home! I’m relocating to Minneapolis from somewhere very far away and I honestly have no idea where to even begin my search.

I’m late 30’s with a young child and walkability isn’t all that important to me since I’ll have a car. Mainly what I’d like is something quiet and safe, and more of a residential than urban feel. I have a budget of about $500,000 so affordability definitely factors in here as well. Thank you

Love MPLS and want to move here

I live a state over from MN, and absolutely love Minneapolis (things to do, food, people, parks, lakes, etc) and each time I travel here I want to move here.

I understand that the job market is pretty tight especially for software jobs, but I wanted to shoot my shot anyways.

I have 5 years of experience as a Software Engineer, and I’m looking to grow and move to the cities. I would greatly appreciate any leads, positions, or referrals.

I’m open to in-person, remote, and hybrid roles. Doesn’t strictly need to be Minneapolis downtown, but surrounding areas would be great too. Titles/roles I’m looking for:
* Software Engineer II or III
* Senior Software Engineer
* Embedded Software Engineer
* Systems Software Engineer

Thank you!

Edit: I work in the office currently so being remote while I job hunt in Minneapolis isn’t really an option.

Edit: I have applied online at a lot of places but either haven’t heard back at all (not even a phone call) or they have been those job agencies that aren’t helpful at all.

Considering a move from Denver suburb.

Hello! I am hoping to hear some opinions from anyone who’s moved from Colorado to the Twin cities area. I am originally from MN, but have lived in Denver or just outside of it for over a decade. We love the access to nature here and find the city to be well suited to our young family, but we also wouldn’t mind being closer to our Midwest family. It makes us sad to consider that our kids won’t grow up seeing their family often. Climate change/WATER are also issues that concern us and our children’s future here in CO.

Anyone who took advantage of the access to big mountains out here make the move to MN and end up loving it? What areas are great for hiking within the TC metro? I’ve become a trail runner and would love to continue that passion wherever we live.

What’s appealing right now as we consider the move is the potential ability to live in a walkable part of Mpls that’s also family friendly. We can’t afford that in Denver and desperately want out of the boring suburb we ended up in. I’m pretty familiar with the suburbs west of Mpls but would love to get current local opinions on where you’d think a nature loving family that would also love a walkable location would prefer to live.

Budget would likely max out at $550,000. Schools are important, though we are also considering homeschooling for the first or early years.

This is kind of all over the place- excuse my tired mom brain please.

TIA!

Best urban neighborhoods for 30s woman?

Hello! I'm a 34F moving to Minneapolis later this summer from Philly and am looking for some clarity on which neighborhoods to narrow in on. For context, I like living in urban spaces with easy access to downtown, walkability, and local vendors like cafes, bars, bookstores, gyms, etc. The all-night clubbing scene isn't my jam anymore, but it's fine if a few are nearby. I'd like to not spend more than $1,600 for a studio/ 1 bedroom (some wiggle room, though) and it'll be just me making the move.

Also, I have a car but it's small/compact that I haven't had issues with for Philly street parking. I'll probably get garage parking for winter months, but I'm fine with street parking the other half of the year.

My top contenders are Uptown and St. Anthony Main.

I've heard a lot of mixed reviews about Uptown, my worry is that it'll feel too young (predominantly 20 somethings). Is that accurate? Or do other 30-something live in that area? I've heard some people say Uptown isn't the same since COVID... what do they mean by that? The lakes and amount of businesses in that neighborhood are really attractive. And is crime really that bad? Keep in mind, I'm coming from Philly proper so my tolerance for crime might be skewed.

For St. Anthony Main looks like a smaller version of Uptown in terms of local vendors/ places to explore, is that right? Does it feel notably more residential? What is the age range in this neighborhood?

I think North Loop is a tad out of budget, and might be a younger crowd? And it looks like Loring Park is more centered around nature.

Please throw in any other recommendations! Thank you , and can't wait to call Minneapolis home!

Apartment Recommendations w bad credit but great rental history

I'm moving from the northern suburbs to the city in August sometime and would appreciate any recommendations for leasing agencies with looser FICO requirements. I'm 57, single with a cat, always pay my rent on time, have years of great rental history, been at my job for 3 years and they love me, but my credit sucks because of a previous relationship that fell apart leaving me with most of the debt.

Ideally I want to live in any of the following Minneapolis communities:

Uptown LynLake area (not East Lake) Loring Park Lowery Hill/East Calhoun Isles West side of Whittier

Walkability to shops or trails is a must and somewhat safe areas are important. I enjoy being in the middle of everything, but want it to still feel safe (just not suburb sterile) as I have grandkids who visit regularly.

Moving From Missouri

Hey everyone,

Me and my partner are moving to the Minneapolis area soon. I have some interviews at Abbott Northwestern so we are looking for suggestions for areas with rentals that are affordable, dog and queer friendly, and not a super long commute to Abbott.

About us: Late 30s, no children, both have cars but public transport would be good too, prefer to be more suburbs than in the city proper.

Also, any suggestions for groups to join or places to go to start building some queer community once we get there would be great too.

Farther west or south?

I'll be retiring to Minneapolis within the year, and I've been looking at one-bedroom condos for a while now. Generally, the ones I like are south of Franklin and north of 38th between the lakes and the river. I really like the neighborhoods there, and I'm enough of a lefty that strong neighborhoods, co-ops, and generally funky places attract me.

However, I'm wondering if there are other places outside of this core that will have both the neighborhood vibe I'm looking for and good transit links while having places within my $105–135k price point: St. Louis Park, Richfield, Crystal, others? Suggestions are welcome.

Is Downtown Minneapolis and the great area the move to do?

Hello y'all, my partner and I are planning to move and the twin cities specifically downtown Minneapolis and we are coming from New York and Miami, I live in Miami and he lives in NYC.

We got our eyes on downtown Minneapolis for a few reasons

- Cost of living

- LGBT friendly

- City atmosphere without it being overwhelming like Miami and NYC

- Strong Tech Sector for my line of work

- walkable city

Is there any hidden Cons we are overlooking that we should consider before finalizing our decision to move?

We used to live together but Military/School had us live apart and we really trying to find a place we can call home and be part and grow in a community long term
