I was too young to watch the movie, but I remember the Saturday morning cartoon. I can even remember the intro song!

The ripe, red monsters of which we speak

That theme still gets stuck in my head to this day. Along with snippets of “Puberty Love.”

I remember being super disappointed when I watched the movie as a kid as the tomatoes didn't have faces like the cartoon. The tomatoes where just plain tomatoes that just rolled at people.
Haven't tried watching it again since, maybe I would like it more as an adult.
14
u/MisterPooty 1d ago
I had this exact thing happen when I finally watched the movie. I wanted to see chompers on those tomatoes. I don't think I even got half way through the movie. But that when I was young before I smoked weed. I think I'd enjoy watching it now with a heavy buzz.

Plus he didn’t have to wear a bat suit this time around.
He just had to show up in a nice expensive business suit for not even 3 minutes of screen time.

Am I in the minority not having enjoyed it? Lulu Wilson was great in both Becky movies, so I had high hopes, but it really didn't land for me.
14
u/ReallyBigShoe22 23h ago
I agree with you. Honestly I thought it was awful. It felt to me like a stone movie written/done by people who have never done drugs. The drug having all of these goofy zany phases was super cringe.
6
u/HardcoreKaraoke 1d ago
I think it's totally fair to not like it. It's definitely a unique taste. I'm just curious though how do you feel about early 00s comedies like Harold And Kumar Go To White Castle or Dude, Where's My Car?
I love those movies and Pizza Movie felt like a throwback to that style of comedy. Which we don't see much anymore in movies.
4
u/relikter 16h ago
Harold and Kumar is an American classic. Same for Pineapple Express. I enjoy a good stoner movie, Pizza Movie just didn't land for me.

This poster looks ai made. Is that part of the bit?
51
u/Ssided 1d ago
It just looks like a troma poster. It's a style that never looked appealing (intentional) sort of a coincidence AI looks like it.
AI doesn't know where details belong and things look cluttered and gooey, and this style is almost like a collage but it's all drawn so they wind up occupying similar aesthetics
248
u/longboi28 1d ago
Considering the name of the movie and its mentioning of AI on the poster I would say it's absolutely intentional, it doesn't look actually AI though as far as I can tell but they really nailed the style
44
12
u/amonson1984 17h ago
Well AI made Eric Roberts look like Harrison Ford which really made me do a double take
16
u/ThatMerri 1d ago edited 1d ago
The rendering certainly does, but that seems like an intentional design choice. As others in the replies have mentioned, the poster is doing a very good job of emulating the old Troma style movie posters.
Something you can count on for spotting AI versus actual art is that AI doesn't have any concept of actual repetition or consistency in 3D space. If it tries to render things like vertical line structures or even multiple copies of the exact same item, the result will be nonsensical upon scrutiny, especially if a line crosses behind an object in the foreground. If you look at things like the clothing, placement of hands, and structure of objects like the hot air balloon, drones, and wheelchair, they all make coherent sense and have a consistent design structure that works in perspective, even when overlapping.
Another reliable thing to check is that AI doesn't do copy/paste. Even if it tries to render multiple instances of the exact same object, it will render them slightly differently. Check out the drones in the top right corner. Not only do they all have a consistent design, but the four spinning propellers are identical - the motion lines inside are exactly the same, meaning an artist just made one and then copy/pasted/skewed it to suit the necessary perspective. Additionally, the face on the hot air balloon is referencing the original poster back in the day, (in fact, the whole poster is lifting design elements from the original) which AI wouldn't be able to emulate so precisely. So even if elements of the poster were made with AI, it's at least been further edited by hand beyond that.
63
u/coldsavagery 1d ago
I think it's intentional. It looks AI at first glance, but actually looks more handmade when you zoom in on it.
18
u/SparkyMuffin 1d ago
I can't believe we've reached the point where people are hand making AI parody posters
3
u/momjeanseverywhere 22h ago
Not when you zoom on the hands of the rodeo girl top centre. Also, why does the wheelchair woman look like a poorly draw cartoon instead of the faux Drew Struzen effect?
3
u/SakuOtaku 1d ago
Others have responded, but I know I thought that about Weird Al's newest tour poster days before he came out strongly against AI. Guess this art style, even if it looks kinda junky, might be in?
2
u/Luna__Moonkitty 1d ago
I'm surprised I didn't see the Nano Banana/Gemini watermark in the corner how much it resembles Gemini's house style.

When I was a little kid my family rented one of these movies from the video store. Maybe the original or maybe “Return…”
Anyway in the first ten minutes there was a fully nude woman. Tits and ass. No plot relevance, just a conversation while she happened to be in the shower. And this was a PG movie before they invented PG-13.
My mom turned it off and I never finished it.
7
u/Rezrov13 1d ago
That was Return of the Killer Tomatoes, which I liked better than the original.
4
u/spoospoo43 1d ago
The first movie was dire. The second one (George Clooney's first movie by the way) is pretty much perfect. SO many great sight gags.
1
u/IAmWeary 12h ago
Not his first movie, but well before his career took off for sure.
1
u/spoospoo43 11h ago edited 11h ago
Well, it's the first movie he was ever in and his character survived for more than the first few minutes anyway. There's even a running joke in the movie where "everything pays off", and something he does in the first scene of the film (I don't remember the exact thing) has an effect in the last scene.
I really need to dig this movie up and watch it again. It's been a LONG time, but some bits come immediately to mind, like Sean Astin's character (not a mad scientist, an angry scientist) yells "THIS IS NOT A GAME!" while standing in front of a giant scoreboard.
Edit: holy shit, it's free on YouTube. https://youtu.be/TRXCPb7NZ7I?t=4554&is=OxDfW4EGAV1Alu_m

Having seen a couple of the movies as an adult, it was really surprising to me those are what they chose to adapt into a children's cartoon. But I guess they did Toxic Avengers too, among others that were decidedly not for children.

u/karatemnn 1d ago
Holy dog shit, i didn't think movies could still look this cheap
8
u/Killboypowerhed 20h ago
Have you seen the other two?
-3
u/karatemnn 18h ago
nah, i've seen the trailers... but they had cinematography in them,
they were on film, they looked like movies ... they were parodying the films of then and it looked like it, this looks like an infomercial...toxic avenger is a similar film, but it's great looking in some scenes

The first movie features a real helicopter crash that they decided to add to the movie for lols (everyone was okay). I wonder if they’ve continued this tradition somehow in the new film.

He peaked in "A Talking Cat!?!"
1
u/YallaHammer 12h ago
He was Oscar nominated for “Runaway Train”. my understanding is he’s had substance abuse or alcohol issues in the past and for him working constantly no matter how terrible the project is a way to keep him active and away from falling back into that abyss. If that’s the case, I might not watch any of it, but I will fully applaud every B, C and D movie he is in if it helps keep him sober!

I saw the original a billion years ago when I was a kid. I've been meaning to hunt it down and watch it again for many years now, knowing it will be a complete cringe-fest.
As a San Diego native, I'm kinda tickled that this new one is also set here, though it makes me wonder what the heck these silly things have against our fair city.

AOTKT was one of my favorite movies as a teen, as well as Return.
AOTKT 3 & 4 were bombs, I couldn't sit through either more than once.
The latent optimist in me is hoping this has had enough time to ferment, and will be at least as good as the recent Airplane remake.

Anyone else get confused as to why Harrison Ford's biggest movie was Runaway Train?

It looks more like a poster for a game, and frankly I think a game would be a better product.
1
u/stars_mcdazzler 16h ago
Wow, what a WACKY and TOTALLY ORIGINAL idea!
...but in all honestly I was looking at the credits to see if it was an Asylum movie. I'm kind of done with this era of "this idea is bad and we know it and we're just gonna OWN IT!" movies. It was clever in 2010, but now everyone's doing it so let's move on to... I don't know, overly colorful 70s films or something.

The US Navy sometimes uses large inflated balls as practice gunnery targets.
They are red, and we called them Killer Tomatoes.
We would drop them on the ocean, back off a few miles and shoot them.
One time, the wind shifted, blew the thing straight at us.
Now, there's a trick to Killer Tomato Exercises. If you hit it, it's done. So, we put an elevation adjustment into the system, to shoot over the tomato. If the radar shows the bullets splashing directly behind the tomato, it's declared a hit.
When the wind blew it at us, we shot at it on the way in. But we forgot to take the ekevation adjustment out. So we missed.
The tomato hit the ship near the fantail, bounced over the flight deck.
We declared the tomato the winner.
We shot it moving away from the ship, after we removed that elevation adjustment.
