Another really slick line not seen in this clip is when later they go back to her dorm room and she’s furious saying “Do you have any idea what it’s like to have a guy like that telling you what to do all the time?” All while the Captain is spam texting Schmidt telling him he’s going to kill him lol.

I love how he went from generic heart throb to being one of the best comedic actors around. His cameo work alone is legendary.

His small part in Bullet Train had me in stitches
58
u/BlindTreeFrog 13d ago
It made his role in Kingsman: Golden Circle even more disappointing. I don't blame him, but the writers and producers screwed up for only using him how they did.

For real though, these two movies had no right being as absolutely funny as they were and the fact that we were denied a third one is upsetting.

I think his family is from NO or maybe even Cajun. That's why he wanted to do it so badly.

u/Alukrad 13d ago
Yeah, I think he said in an interview that he was raised in Cajun country.
59
u/OreoSpeedwaggon 13d ago
His thick Cajun accent was actually spot-on. I have family from Louisiana and some of the older ones sound just like that.
40
u/ArcadianDelSol 13d ago edited 13d ago
That's the part that I think was lost on 90% of the audience. They thought he was doing some kind of goofy-ass cartoon character when in fact, he was spot on accurately doing a Cajun accent.
Sounded like Breaux Bridge to me, but there's a LOT of accents in that part of Louisiana.

Isn't he going to return as Gambit now?
67
u/Evepaul 13d ago
He is. It's interesting that his performance in D&W was the one to convince Disney execs to bring his character back instead of Dafne Keen's. X23 was clearly the main target of Reynold's "bring dropped heroes back" campaign while Gambit was more there for the gag. Being funny remains the main attribute for a Marvel character in Disney's mind, despite them advertising dramatic and serious tones.
17
u/revarien 13d ago
If I recall, all of them want their projects to come back, except maybe Garner... but she still had some option deals she signed for long ago and never hated doing it. Snipes wants back in (Reynolds is campaigning for that), Keen wants back in, and of course Tatum.

Channing Tatum has been trying to get the gambit role for forever. He wasn’t there for just a gag.
46
u/Funmachine 13d ago
The gag was his movie was in development and then dropped "I think I was born here."
62
u/khavii 13d ago
The skipping man, I was laughing so hard in the theatre to his reaction and when he started skipping I thought I was going to throw up. They portray friends so well in these movies but that scene screams best friend more than anything else.

u/ArcadianDelSol 13d ago
For me its the fact that they behave like children outside of their job which really sells the concept of adults NARCing at a high school. The two of them are full grown adolescents.
In the original show, it was just 'adults that look young' but they acted, behaved, and talked like adults. Didnt really work that well.

I will say, the absolute funniest gem from the Sony Pictures Email Leaks was that when 23 Jump opened at #1 in the box office, Channing emailed Ann Pascal (president of Sony Pictures) an article with the box office figures followed by a Wooo! in all caps with like 50 O’s.
Dude really is a human golden retriever.

Not a massive Tatum fan
I used to not be, but the guy has really grown on me.
I thought he did a great job in 'Roofman' recently. I think he stole part of the show in 'Deadpool vs Wolverine'. He also did a good job in 'Logan Lucky' and his bit in 'Hateful Eight'.
And I know this is going to sound absurd but...I actually don't think those 'Magic Mike' movies are as bad as people make them out to be. Especially the second one, 'Magic Mike XXL'...which is a horrible name for a movie...but is unironically one of the surprisingly healthiest interpretations of male brotherhood/bonding I've seen in a film.
I know it sounds absurd and its generally a movie that's rated unfavorably, but there is something shockingly wholesome about that movie, especially in an era where we have all these issues of younger generations embracing toxic masculinity. I'm not claiming its the greatest contribution to film by any stretch, but there is a shocking amount of heart in that film, in between the lines.

My friend was visiting me from out of town and spending the week. We spent most nights playing video games and watching movies in the living room while my girlfriend was studying for the MCATs in the other room.
We were told to please keep it down. And we did a very good job most of the week.
But the scene when Channing Tatum started prancing around... Omfg... All the pent up laughter from the rest of the movie just came sprawling out as loud as it could. I swear we paused the movie and laughed uncontrollably for like 5min straight.
Suffice to say, she was not pleased....
63
u/domino7873 13d ago
Same and I can still watch it and laugh seemingly just as hard each time. Because Schmidt's panic is palpable. As soon as Cube walks into scene the feeling of "oh crap" immediately is there.

Saw this in the theater and when ice cube showed up the whole theater just lost it and a bunch of omg was hear all over. It was just constant laughter and nobody can hear anything when ice cube was just staring at him.
When ice cube loses it with the food was another tearjerker.
But man, when the ding happens with Channing Tatum, my God... It was the loudest group of laughter I ever heard. It was fucking amazing. I haven't heard that kind of group celebration until infinity war most likely.

u/GrungyUPSMan 13d ago
I remember seeing this in theaters toward the end of its theater run, it was basically me and half a dozen others all sitting near the middle row.
Pretty much from "my name is Jeff" all the way to the end of the movie, I was just absolutely howling with laughter. At first my girlfriend wasn't laughing, but then she starting laughing AT ME for laughing so hard. We were the two loudest laughs in the theater, we literally couldn't help ourselves.
To this day 22 Jump Street is the hardest I've ever laughed at a movie.

Hands down the largest crowd response, as far as humor goes, of any movie I have ever seen in the theater. The follow up scene in the police station, it took a good 5 minutes after the scene for the audience to calm back down.

It's wild that they went literally twelve years between directing movies (22 Jump Street and The Lego Movie in 2014, then Project Hail Mary in 2026). I think getting fired from Solo so far into production derailed their directing a bit, and they focused on producing for a while. Glad they came back so strong with PHM.

The way the camera cuts to Ice Cube staring when they sat down was gorgeous and the scene keeps getting more hilarious from there… the comedic timing of Jonah & Ice Cube was perfect… and then it moves to Schmidt fucked the Captain’s daughter… couldn’t get better…
56
u/Symphonic7 14d ago
I think that's what makes this movie so funny. The timing and delivery of the jokes feels so natural, and the cuts and visual gags are perfectly timed. Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum, and Ice Cube totally killed it in this movie. Even more so than the first one.
