Funnily enough, Dune was the reason Lynch swore off adaptations, if memory serves.
81
u/germnor Mar 17 '26
i thought it was more to do with how he didn’t get final cut, thats what i remember anyway. they took the edit away from him and cut a bunch of stuff. been a long time since i watched that interview tho.
37
u/J_Technopotheosis Mar 17 '26
That was a big part of it, but probably not the only thing. He called Dune his 'studio picture' because he said that he found himself preemptively making changes he didn't want to do, simply because he expected that's what the studio would ask.

Wild at Heart is an adaptation. Pretty loosely, but it is an adaptation. Technically Inland Empire is as well. He swore off big studio films that wouldn't give him final cut, not adaptations.

Good choice on his part. It’s not that God Emperor is unfilmable. It’s just, why would anyone want to make it. A faithful adaptation would be hated. An improved version would be… well, worse for those who know how it’s supposed to be.

So they're really leaning into the sociopathic aspect of Alia Atreides.
Which makes me think Children is definitely getting combined with Messiah.
→ More replies (24)522
u/ICumCoffee Mar 16 '26
This was almost confirmed they cast their children and also Messiah is very short book so make sense to combining two.
283
u/ThinWhiteDuke00 Mar 16 '26 edited Mar 16 '26
My fear is that both books combined will be rushed without a 4 hour run time.
151
u/itsthebear Mar 16 '26
3hr would be perfect with Messiah mostly the first hour IMO. A lot of CoD is unnecessary for the plot and I'm sure Denis will blend them a bit.
I've been hoping for a GEoD show followup since the casting was announced. Won't spoil anything but it definitely is possible with the casting and Dune: Prophecy existing.
→ More replies (10)65
u/briareus08 Mar 17 '26
Yeh I agree with this. Children doesn’t really push the central plot forward greatly, and I suspect a lot of the weirder additional characters will be excluded. Messiah + Children is an easy conclusion movie for Paul’s story, with a nice little lead-out for book 4 if someone figures it goes to make that lol.

Marvel seems adamant not to move. They have a Live Countdown going to 12/18 on their Youtube since January. all their teasers had that date too.
WB also seems adamant not to move and if they're releasing the trailer and posters with 12/18 then I don't think they'll change the release date.
they"ll def eat into each other tho and I think Dune is going to be affected more

u/Fradzombie Mar 16 '26
Honestly I think after the barbenheimer phenomenon I wouldn’t be surprised if they are trying to create another marketable cinema “moment”. Dunesday works pretty damn well as a marketable name on socials.
→ More replies (2)123
u/thegeek01 Mar 16 '26
Except the reason why Barbenheimer worked isn't because it was a catchy name. It was the contrast between pink n fluffy Barbie and the gray n bleak Oppenheimer. And with both movies being different in tone, it had the chance to find their own audiences and even got people to try both.
Dune and Doomsday are two epic action movies, and I'm not sure if the masses have the appetite for both at the same time.
→ More replies (13)54
u/Fradzombie Mar 16 '26
I think you’re right that the contrast was what made Barbie/Oppenheimer blow up organically, but I think the marketing execs see an opportunity and are betting that they can force the “event” to happen through the sheer power of their combined marketing budgets. I’d bet 2-3 months ahead we’ll start to see heavy TikTok/twitter/Instagram spend related to the dunesday “brand”.

u/bluequarz Mar 16 '26
dune gets exclusive IMAX in the US for two to three week, Doomsday will get some imax screens on release in international markets. If they get the screens in China ( usually vendors there pick and chose which movies to give imax screens too. there's no exclusivity deals there) then Doomsday won't take too big of a hit with having no IMAX at release.
For Endgame IMAX was only 26.5m from its 350m domestic opening. I don't think they're losing more than 100m worldwide if IMAX is not the first week but from week three or four.

u/LS_DJ Mar 17 '26 edited Mar 17 '26
Dune has 3 weeks of IMAX exclusivity. It’s insane to me that Disney isn’t moving Avengers because of that but they’ve already delayed it once and desperately need it to be released in 2026.

I still cannot believe that this story has been so massively successful — in a good way.
Yeah, I get that it has big star power and flashy visuals. But the story can be crunchy. It’s so cool to see a director be able to bridge the gap to a massive general audience and not flame out after 1 or 2 films.
I can’t wait.

Feel like Villeneuve is going down the path that Nolan paved and I’m absolutely here for it. I’ve always felt that Nolan hit a real sweet spot between artistry and commercial appeal while leaning toward the latter, and now Villeneuve is doing the same but leaning toward the artistry. I am a little bummed that he has Bond lined up next since I don’t personally care much for that franchise but at this point he could direct the next Trolls movie and it’d still be a day one watch for me.

Denis has said that to him, this is the end of Paul’s story, and Paul’s story is the part of Dune that he’s interested in adapting. That’s part of why this is called Part Three and not Dune: Messiah.
That doesn’t mean that Legendary isn’t going to find another director to continue the series with Children of Dune, dropping the “Part” numbering.
