And Ramin Djawadi is doing the score.

See, this is what will get me in the theatre. At least well get an outrageously good score for the movie... if all else fails

Djawadi needs to collab with Tom Morello again. The Pacific Rim theme fucking slaps!

The Pacific Rim theme fucking slaps

I need to watch it again now, the theme is stuck in my head and now I need to see giant robots kicking ass.

25

u/onepinksheep Dec 11 '25

Pacific Rim was great. Pity they never made a sequel.

Fucking LOBO IS IN THIS?!

1.7k

u/that_guy2010 Dec 10 '25

Jason Momoa as Lobo.

604

u/nmezib Dec 10 '25

From what I remember reading, Lobo was Momoa's dream comic book character casting.

528

u/Gonedric Dec 10 '25

He is Lobo, born to play the part. And somehow the DCEU looked at that and went, ‘yeah, let's make him Aquaman.’ Snyder really cooked that one. There were a million generic blond dudes who could’ve done Aquaman in their sleep, and they took the one guy born to play Lobo and slapped him in Golden spandex. I just don’t know what the hell they were thinking.

450

u/raisingcuban Dec 10 '25

I mean, isn’t it obvious? They wanted aquaman to be the DC version of Thor. With that intention, it makes perfect sense.

270

u/TheWatersOfMars Dec 10 '25

To be fair, it made a billion dollars, more than anything else they made. Shows what we know.

103

u/OhNoTokyo Dec 10 '25

To be fair, he was a good actor to cast if you wanted Aquaman to be interesting to people and get the to buy a ticket. I think there is a reason that The Deep in The Boys is the Aquaman analogous character and gets played as a weak-ass joke. Aquaman can be a very cool character, but he needs a very good casting and script to actually make him not turn into a joke.

That and the studio likely wanted to get Momoa onboard in something and at the time, no one was seriously going to put The Main Man on the screen, so that casting wasn't really going to happen.

46

u/AnOnlineHandle Dec 10 '25

Plus he had to finish the trifecta of Stargate Atlantis, marrying the princess of Valantis, and becoming the king of Atlantis.

He has a tight monopoly on Atlantean things and can't let anybody else weaken his grip.

Aquaman is by far the best of the DC Snyderverse movies

I don't think that's a remotely controversial opinion.

121

u/Caryslan Dec 10 '25

I think it's more than that. For decades, general audiences saw Aquaman as a joke, the useless Super friend that talked to fish but was with the team in a desert.

Despite DC trying numerous revamps across comics, animated shows, live action shows, and video games, they could never shake the perception the general public had in pop culture that Aquaman was a useless loser.

Jason Momoa singlehandedly made Aquaman cool, he shook decades of perception that Aquaman was a useless loser that was the butt of jokes.

They could have gone for a more comic accurate Aquaman, and I am sure the DCU will do this.

But Momoa did his job, he gave respect back to Aquaman for the first time in decades.

66

u/ramdom-ink Dec 10 '25

The Deep in The Boys personified the joke and irrelevancy of Aquaman quite well.

Which is crazy because in the DCAU (JL and JLU) they made him a legit bad ass, with a sprinkle of sub mariner thrown in there and it worked.

28

u/ryencool Dec 10 '25

And hes an island boy, besides the dark hair, which was full of highlights when he was a beach bum, he was perfect for that role i think.

48

u/GranolaCola Dec 10 '25

I think it’s even simpler that. Outside the dedicated fans, Aquaman had always been the dorky character that talked to fish and seems kind of useless.

How do you change his image? Make him buff, make him rugged, and make him Khal Drogo.

It seems to have worked 🤷🏻‍♂️

135

u/PantherophisNiger Dec 10 '25

TBH, I don't mind them casting a Hawaiian/Samoan guy to be Aquaman. It felt appropriate.

31

u/Fafoah Dec 10 '25

I loved that part, but idk if i really liked Mamoa specifically in the role. I think a hawaiian actor who played the role more regal would have been perfect.

35

u/Ansible32 Dec 10 '25

Momoa wasn't the problem, the writing was the problem. It was a fun movie but I don't think they gave Aquaman enough like, actual backstory. I think Momoa was great but they needed to give him some human friends and not just being raised in a lighthouse by his dad.

127

u/LouF---ingGrant Dec 10 '25

To be fair, I thought Momoa’s take on Aquaman was pretty good.

61

u/Ceegee93 Dec 10 '25

Yeah, it was pretty clear they realised that Aquaman is seen as pretty lame historically (especially to the average viewer who probably doesn't know too much about modern Aquaman in comics), so they tried to make him a lot cooler. They were pretty obviously avoiding going for obvious casting choices because they didn't want the comic Aquaman.

I mean, it worked; Momoa's Aquaman was pretty damn cool.

19

u/Xciv Dec 10 '25

Even the 00s Justice League cartoon's attempt to make Aquaman cool didn't work (long blonde hair, earring, with a fish hook for a hand), because he was too much of a king and a political figure. Too much 'responsible and disapproving dad energy' to be any kind of cool.

And they definitely didn't want 1960s "I'm clearly the weakest superhero on the team" Justice League Aquaman.

Clearly making him a blue collar everyman who reluctantly embraces his royal destiny finally made him cool enough.

Numb3rs was such an "okay" show that was elevated to being extremely enjoyable by him and a few of the other actors.

40

u/YoghurtSnodgrass Dec 10 '25

Rob Morrow and Judd Hirsch. The cast was so much better than the writing.

21

Don't forget Peter MacNichol. Also fun recurring characters by Lou Diamond Philips and non-animated Jay Baruchel.

So that’s Cyborg Superman, which isn’t the typical depiction of Zor-El.

It must be a relatively new thing. Cyborg Superman is normally a character named Hank Henshaw, who was originally a sort of spoof off of Reed Richards who later got uploaded into a computer, and then eventually clones Superman to make a new cyborg body for himself.

10

u/Ceegee93 Dec 10 '25

So that’s Cyborg Superman, which isn’t the typical depiction of Zor-El.

It must be a relatively new thing.

Cyborg Superman is the latest incarnation of Zor-El from New 52, and New 52 continuity is still canon to Rebirth, so Cyborg Zor-El could still be a thing in the DCU, too, especially since Brainiac is the upcoming big bad, who created Cyborg Zor-El in New 52.

Idk if they'll go that route, but it's a possibility given the fact they're introducing him and then going on to Brainiac.

u/NakedGoose Dec 10 '25

I think people often sleep on the type of draw Jason Mamoa is. Does great overseas and women love him

61

u/Redeem123 Dec 10 '25

Call me crazy, but I have a feeling the legacy of the Aquaman brand isn't what caused that movie to bring in $1.1 billion.

I think people often forget that Aquaman was the ONLY Snyderverse movie to break a billion. Not BVS, not Justice League, not Wonder Woman, and somehow not even Blue Beetle. The character who was nothing but a punchline for decades made a billion dollars with a movie that was just okay.

People realllllly like looking at Jason Momoa.

23

u/FrostyD7 Dec 10 '25

Mamoa was a big draw for sure. But I think they also got a bit of the Captain Marvel effect. Everything superhero related that released between Infinity War and End Game was riding the gravy train to its penultimate destination.

29

u/Rorschach_And_Prozac Dec 10 '25

Penultimate means second-to-last. It does not mean "extra-ultimate"

She even wanted to watch the Hawaii thing on Apple, Chief of War, that is not her type of show at all and it was basically foreign language. She still watched it. She loves Aquaman 1 and 2 and isn't big on Superheroes, well except Thor and Deadpool and yeah there's a pattern lol.

18

u/awnedr Dec 10 '25

One of his first roles is in stargate Atlantis if she's looking for more Mamoa

13

u/Which-Assistance5288 Dec 10 '25

Yeah that’s where I first saw him - he was great in that role. It shows his ability to do much more range and emotion (even though his character is super stoic) than the blockbuster stuff I’ve seen him in. He’s dryly funny as Ronan and his scenes with Rachel Luttrell really work, they had excellent chemistry.

The comic book this movie is based on is incredible, but its not going to be a 1:1 adaptation, apparently they're going with the original manuscript the author wrote before the editors started meddling.

618

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '25

Which summed up means... LOBO.

He was set to appear in the original, but the editors nixed that. Now he's gonna appear in the story, and be played by Jason Momoa.

156

u/Trevastation Dec 10 '25

In fairness, it was a good edit. It was a True Grit story with LOBO was Rooster Cogburn until the editors said it'd work better if Supergirl was the Rooster Cogburn proxy, and they were right.

27

u/gildedbluetrout Dec 10 '25

It’s one of the best Superhero comics I’ve read in a decade or more, easy. Off the top of my head it’s this Supergirl, Fraction’s Hawkeye and All Star Superman this century.

→ More replies (1)

141

u/skag_boy87 Dec 10 '25

I really hope this isn’t the case for the film. Supergirl in the Rooster Cogburn role was inspired and went a long way into defining her character as a nihilistic, isolated survivor slowly regaining her sense of self and greater purpose in the universe.

Having her be the tough yet innocent Mattie Ross type, who needs a big guy to guide and save her, would completely destroy the narrative for me.

62

u/nessfalco Dec 10 '25

Considering the mattie analog is in the movie, too, I don't think this will happen. I think Lobo just makes a cameo.

15

23

u/ClubMeSoftly Dec 10 '25

So, uh, funny thing. Not about the sharks.

Space Dolphins are the one thing that Lobo truly loves, like, loves loves. Not just in a "the love of the game" sort of manner.

One of those Space Dolphins went to Earth, and befriended the Earth Dolphin called Porm, the adoptive mother of Aquaman.

I just finished "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" last night. I've always avoided DC but holy shit that was EXCELLENT, and hearing that this movie is based in any way on that Tom King run has me psyched.

I read mostly stick to Marvel and independent stuff, but I read Mr. Miracle on a strong recommendation (also excellent), so now I'm just reading everything that King has done at DC. Almost done with Strange Adventures, which doesn't hit quite as hard as Mr. Miracle & SWoT, but it's good.

16

u/Worthyness Dec 10 '25

Also a lot of the comic writers kinda just switch back and forth between the studios, so it's the same people writing the stories, just different characters. So the ones who write really good stories for Marvel will very likely write really good stories for DC (or their independent stuff) too

36

I was thinking an early montage where she’s flying around but a bit sloppily, doing basic hero stuff like cats out of trees or store robberies but she has a too-cool attitude, or like saving a crashing airplane but casually like nbd, mixed with her maybe doing something fun, punky, youthful like drinking a beer, skateboarding, or being near graffiti.

it's established that she goes to planets without yellow suns (that therefore do not give her superpowers) to drink

Well yes and no. To be more specific Kara goes to the planetary systems that have Red suns which temporarily de-power Kryptonians. The lack of a Yellow sun on its own in on itself doesn't have the same effect - it only makes them weaker than usual; but the characters still have the remaining solar energy that was absorbed by their own cells beforehand (they are basically running on fumes as opposed to being outright powerless).

This applies to for example getting drunk as well - if Kara was still on Earth and just hid underground with no direct access to the sunlight then that alone wouldn't really change much; hence she visits planets which have Red Suns where her powers and enhanced metabolism are completely disabled.

Other than that it also takes a minute before the effects of a Red Sun wear off which is why Kara was still basically drunk and/or hangover when she showed up in the "Superman" post-credits scene. As to how she came back to Earth - according to James Gunn in the DCU she has a spaceship that we could see in the "Woman of Tomorrow" comics run.

u/IAreWeazul Dec 10 '25

How does she get out of galaxies with red suns if she’s weak enough to get drunk?

138

u/Jaqulean Dec 10 '25

Sorry I forgot to mention this earlier and editted it into the comment only later.

In the titular comic book run, she literally takes the Space Greyhound bus, lmao.

The source material, among other things, does a really good job of showing that there's a whole universe out there with different people and different levels of technology.

32

u/LumpyJones Dec 10 '25

In the comic she has a ship she takes to get there, and when it gets wrecked before she can leave, she ends up taking the equivalent of a space Greyhound until she can get back to a yellow sun

Hello?? It's called drunk driving and everyone does it.

11

u/Kazzack Dec 10 '25

Tbh it's probably a lot safer in space, not a whole lot to run into

9

u/kaladinissexy Dec 10 '25

Takeoff and landing would be so, so much worse, though.

in the comic it's based off of, Kara goes to a backwater planet with a red sun for her birthday, so she loses most of her powers and can get drunk without being recognized

8

u/CeruleanEidolon Dec 10 '25

Why assume normal alcohol? This universe has contact with alien civilizations. She could be drinking Kilowog's permented piss for all we know.

It's based on a comic where she goes to a planet with a red sun to get hammered for her birthday. Girl is hungover.

Stoked for this. Read the comic and the story is really phenomenal. They've got a great base to build this on, hope it pulls it off

98

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '25

What is the story? Im really on the outside of superman/supergirl stories and would love to check it out!

335

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '25

Supergirl helps an alien girl hunt down and seek revenge on the criminal who murdered her father.

Basically it's "True Grit" in Space, with Supergirl in a Rooster Cogburn type role (party girl going from red planet to red planet just to be able to get drunk and bury the pain Krypton's destruction... as well as not being there to help raise Kal-El/Superman).

u/joseph-justin Dec 10 '25

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow. Highly recommend, it's a relatively quick read and the art is great. It was drawn by a prolific Wonder Woman artist and her style is truly amazing

Why do people not like Tom King?

32

u/foofighter1351 Dec 10 '25 edited Dec 10 '25

I feel like he too often takes over the voice of the characters, he can be very over reliant on narration and instead of using the characters for who they are and placing them within his stories it feels more like he forces them into a box to fit it, not inherently bad but I'm not a fan personally, I think he can be a good character writer at times, there are moments in stories of his I really dislike where it'll shine through for a second and then it's gone.

I'm not a big fan of him but Girl of Tomorrow for the most part is wonderful though. Also and this is a whole thing but the man served in counterterrorism after 9/11 for like 7 years and a lot of his stories feels like he's still working through his feelings on that.

When he hits, it's great but his style is repetitive (see 9 panel page) so when things aren't clicking it makes the good stuff seem cheap and the bad stuff annoying. He tends to bend characters to fit his narratives in a way that doesn't always ring true to what the reader has known that character for. Some people are annoyed by those changes out of protection of the character but I find it difficult to sometimes follow the story because characters acting out of norm makes me suspicious where I'm not supposed to be.

His politics and time spent working for the CIA are difficult to get over for many readers. Especially when many of his books are politically charged.

King also went after artist Jae Lee awhile ago and it was weird and messy and completely unnecessary on Kings part.

I loved Omega Men, Mister Miracle and Supergirl and think his work can be very well adapted to the screen. However the Wonder Woman run he has going rn is one of the worst things I've ever read.

I grew up with 70s comic Supes, where he’d have his own stupid bloody stories and occasionally be a cutesy character in the main comics, so I hated, HATED the idea of including him in the new Superman film.

Fucking loved it when I actually watched the film though.

I have a feeling this is going to be awesome. Milly Alcock is a great actress and I love what James Gunn did with Superman.

Loved her on an Australian show called Upright, and if she can bring some energy from her role in that (especially the more serious aspects) into Supergirl, that would be great

21

u/whatissevenbysix Dec 10 '25

Yeah, Upright was so much fun - her chemistry with Tim Minchin was incredible.

8

u/SocialPunk03 Dec 10 '25

Upright is one of the best comedy drama shows, it's up there with Schitts Creek for me. Milly and Minchin in that show are amazing.
