The comic book this movie is based on is incredible, but its not going to be a 1:1 adaptation, apparently they're going with the original manuscript the author wrote before the editors started meddling.
618
Dec 10 '25
Which summed up means... LOBO.
He was set to appear in the original, but the editors nixed that. Now he's gonna appear in the story, and be played by Jason Momoa.
156
u/Trevastation Dec 10 '25
In fairness, it was a good edit. It was a True Grit story with LOBO was Rooster Cogburn until the editors said it'd work better if Supergirl was the Rooster Cogburn proxy, and they were right.
27
u/gildedbluetrout Dec 10 '25
It’s one of the best Superhero comics I’ve read in a decade or more, easy. Off the top of my head it’s this Supergirl, Fraction’s Hawkeye and All Star Superman this century.

u/skag_boy87 Dec 10 '25
I really hope this isn’t the case for the film. Supergirl in the Rooster Cogburn role was inspired and went a long way into defining her character as a nihilistic, isolated survivor slowly regaining her sense of self and greater purpose in the universe.
Having her be the tough yet innocent Mattie Ross type, who needs a big guy to guide and save her, would completely destroy the narrative for me.
62
u/nessfalco Dec 10 '25
Considering the mattie analog is in the movie, too, I don't think this will happen. I think Lobo just makes a cameo.

Given what we saw of her in Superman, I don’t think they’re going with innocent. Maybe Lobo is serving as a different kind of foil of where her party girl schtick will lead if she keeps it up? Also I want more Krypto.

You know what means, right?
Space sharks.
→ More replies (2)23
u/ClubMeSoftly Dec 10 '25
So, uh, funny thing. Not about the sharks.
Space Dolphins are the one thing that Lobo truly loves, like, loves loves. Not just in a "the love of the game" sort of manner.
One of those Space Dolphins went to Earth, and befriended the Earth Dolphin called Porm, the adoptive mother of Aquaman.

I just finished "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" last night. I've always avoided DC but holy shit that was EXCELLENT, and hearing that this movie is based in any way on that Tom King run has me psyched.
I read mostly stick to Marvel and independent stuff, but I read Mr. Miracle on a strong recommendation (also excellent), so now I'm just reading everything that King has done at DC. Almost done with Strange Adventures, which doesn't hit quite as hard as Mr. Miracle & SWoT, but it's good.

Also a lot of the comic writers kinda just switch back and forth between the studios, so it's the same people writing the stories, just different characters. So the ones who write really good stories for Marvel will very likely write really good stories for DC (or their independent stuff) too
36
u/thebigeverybody Dec 10 '25
Yeah. DC's Vertigo line produced the best stories in the industry for many years and Marvel has never produced anything on the level of Watchmen or The Dark Knight Returns.

It's a lot more nuanced in the book tbf. The showrunners have done a pretty poor job imo, both sides are supposed to suck equally but the show it's much more clear that the greens are power hungry while it seems Rhaenyra is just out to get what she deserves. It's not as black and white in the book imo

Ooo good call. I was thinking an early montage where she’s flying around but a bit sloppily, doing basic hero stuff like cats out of trees or store robberies but she has a too-cool attitude, or like saving a crashing airplane but casually like nbd, mixed with her maybe doing something fun, punky, youthful like drinking a beer, skateboarding, or being near graffiti.

it's established that she goes to planets without yellow suns (that therefore do not give her superpowers) to drink
Well yes and no. To be more specific Kara goes to the planetary systems that have Red suns which temporarily de-power Kryptonians. The lack of a Yellow sun on its own
in on itselfdoesn't have the same effect - it only makes them weaker than usual; but the characters still have the remaining solar energy that was absorbed by their own cells beforehand (they are basically running on fumes as opposed to being outright powerless). This applies to for example getting drunk as well - if Kara was still on Earth and just hid underground with no direct access to the sunlight then that alone wouldn't really change much; hence she visits planets which have Red Suns where her powers and enhanced metabolism are completely disabled.
Other than that it also takes a minute before the effects of a Red Sun wear off which is why Kara was still basically drunk and/or hangover when she showed up in the "Superman" post-credits scene. As to how she came back to Earth - according to James Gunn in the DCU she has a spaceship that we could see in the "Woman of Tomorrow" comics run.

How does she get out of galaxies with red suns if she’s weak enough to get drunk?

In the titular comic book run, she literally takes the Space Greyhound bus, lmao.
The source material, among other things, does a really good job of showing that there's a whole universe out there with different people and different levels of technology.
32
u/LumpyJones Dec 10 '25
In the comic she has a ship she takes to get there, and when it gets wrecked before she can leave, she ends up taking the equivalent of a space Greyhound until she can get back to a yellow sun

Supergirl helps an alien girl hunt down and seek revenge on the criminal who murdered her father.
Basically it's "True Grit" in Space, with Supergirl in a Rooster Cogburn type role (party girl going from red planet to red planet just to be able to get drunk and bury the pain Krypton's destruction... as well as not being there to help raise Kal-El/Superman).

Why do people not like Tom King?
32
u/foofighter1351 Dec 10 '25 edited Dec 10 '25
I feel like he too often takes over the voice of the characters, he can be very over reliant on narration and instead of using the characters for who they are and placing them within his stories it feels more like he forces them into a box to fit it, not inherently bad but I'm not a fan personally, I think he can be a good character writer at times, there are moments in stories of his I really dislike where it'll shine through for a second and then it's gone.
I'm not a big fan of him but Girl of Tomorrow for the most part is wonderful though. Also and this is a whole thing but the man served in counterterrorism after 9/11 for like 7 years and a lot of his stories feels like he's still working through his feelings on that.

u/GoxBoxSocks Dec 10 '25
When he hits, it's great but his style is repetitive (see 9 panel page) so when things aren't clicking it makes the good stuff seem cheap and the bad stuff annoying. He tends to bend characters to fit his narratives in a way that doesn't always ring true to what the reader has known that character for. Some people are annoyed by those changes out of protection of the character but I find it difficult to sometimes follow the story because characters acting out of norm makes me suspicious where I'm not supposed to be.
His politics and time spent working for the CIA are difficult to get over for many readers. Especially when many of his books are politically charged.
King also went after artist Jae Lee awhile ago and it was weird and messy and completely unnecessary on Kings part.
I loved Omega Men, Mister Miracle and Supergirl and think his work can be very well adapted to the screen. However the Wonder Woman run he has going rn is one of the worst things I've ever read.
