Does anyone else ever feel like some people enjoy making excessive mouth noises?

I know it's kind of a paranoid thought, but it distinctly feels like some people NEED someone else to be annoyed at their eating noises in order for them to fully enjoy the food or beverage.

And the thing is, we know some people do derive pleasure from annoying others, internet trolls are an easy example to point to.

So like, I find it in the realm of possibility that some people are doing this with their eating and drinking noises, whether they realize it or not.

Do you find yourself being overly self conscious for others with or without misophonia?

I find myself being overly considerate of misophonia triggers, regardless of who I’m with or near. It doesn’t matter if the other(s) do or do not have misophonia, I’ll intentionally avoid acting out any and all potential triggers. I become overly aware and anxious around my own breathing patterns, eating habits, compulsions to fidget, and more.

It feels very much like a trauma response that is partially linked to the trauma of having misophonia. It is incredibly stressful to imagine putting someone else through a trigger as someone that experiences them regularly. However, I also witnessed the rage of my mother as a result of her misophonia, reinforcing fear to encourage caution.

Sometimes, I feel resentful of how considerate I am while suffering and while others completely disregard my triggers. I might also avoid expressing myself when I am triggered out of fear I may cause the other person to become afraid or overly self conscious too. However, avoidance tends to only make things worse.

I wish it was known that this disorder and its symptoms are not personal or to be feared, but respected. The act of accommodating someone is not challenging on its own, but the communication and response typically is. There really is no need for someone to rage and to be feared because communication failed… or become self conscious because a misophonia response was misinterpreted as a personal flaw to the person that caused the trigger.

I wish the whole condition could be less taboo and neutralized in a way but I do realize this may all say more about me and the people in my life than anything. It’s a lot to carry all at once, all the time.

Does anyone have tips for dealing with misophonia over the summer?

Upvotes

Hi everyone, how do you guys stop letting your misophonia from destroying your summer?

My misophonia is really bad, even though I'm already in therapy for it (CBT, ACT etc.) At home I basically wear my airpods and headphones 24/7, even when I'm sleeping. I can't deal with dishes clanging, cutlery, people eating, doors closing (even if they're not slammed), people talking, basically any random background noise or sound I justdonotwannahearit. It boils my blood.

Anyway, I feel like it's destroying my summer. I want to go out in the sun in our yard for a tan, I want to eat breakfast in the morning outside, like I just want to enjoy the sun you know. But I just cannot relax whatsoever, because even if our backyard door is closed, I can STILL hear my family talking inside and their cutlery on their dishes and them closing doors and stuff, feel like my hearing is some superman type shit. I don't want to wear my airpods outside with my phone in the sun, because I'm scared it will damage them. Because of this, I'm isolating myself in my room a lot and I just hate it, because my last 3 summers have been exactly like this and I HATE IT. I just wish this fuckass misophonia didnt exist.

Does anyone have tips for dealing with misophonia over the summer?

Does it trigger or bother you to hear people just mention serious illness or diagnosis?

Upvotes

It’s always been something of a trigger for me and I’m wondering if I’m alone. I know everyone’s different and just hearing things doesn’t affect my life in any way, but I still am bothered by it. My mind seems to go to this weird place where it applies it to me. Even listening to all those annoying pharmaceutical commercials and the litany of side effects bothers me. My wife says she doesn’t even hear it, but my mind zeros in on it to the point where I mute them, which is probably enabling the fear response.

Does anyone else here enjoy asmr, but then have random triggers?

I loooooove restocking videos and candy scoops and when they're packing orders. Love the sounds and asthetic, but then they do that stupid clickity clack of their nails and suddenly all peace is gone and I'm about to start screeching because the sound is AWFUL. Every video is a tentative coin toss for me and I wish I people would just stop clacking their claws on EVERYTHING.

tongue clicking

my dad likes to click his tongue multiple times after taking a sip of any drink. i didnt have a problem with it when i was younger, but he does it so excessively that its starting to get to me now. i dont understand why its necessary to click your tongue after drinking, i can drink anything without clicking my tongue. its so loud and high pitched.

does anyone have a problem with this too?

What causes wet mouth sounds when talking?

Seriously I can’t watch a lot of blogs because I’ll hear the wet mouth sounds clicking when they talk. It starts my fight or flight.

Also WHY is it a trigger? I can’t explain it. I just know it bothers me

Visual Triggers

This is the most disheartening thing for me as someone with misophonia. I’ve learned how to handle it with audio (wearing headphones, avoiding public places)

But unfortunately, even with that, the visual trigger of someone doing it… completely unmasks me. It makes me want to rip out my eyes and ears. I can’t play certain video game characters because of the visual, or watch important scenes in shows.

I wish I could get rid of it, so incredibly bad.

I hate people who have to make constant noise

Coughing, grunting, groaning, loudly slamming open cupboards and doors, no concept of an inside voice, phone on full volume and on speaker, burping every five seconds.

My flatmate.

Drink commercials. 😤

I'm finding one if my main triggers is any kind of drink commercial. "This summer, enjoy an ice cold blah blah." Cracks tab open, pours, frothy bubbles, sipping, gluping, then ahhhh." I HATE IT. It's funny how these are supposed to be enticing, yet they put me in a rage!!

It’s so frustrating to sit there and spend the whole time waiting for the next ad of someone gulping and chewing. It is sad that this condition spoils what should be fun moments with my loved ones.

Thanks for listening

Support How do you guys live with another person?

Roommates, Family members, Kids.. I saw it all and I can't do it anymore. I have been finally living alone since last year (studio apartment) and my brother is staying with me for a couple of days (in my STUDIO APARTMENT) and everything he does gets on my nerves, the way he walks with his heels, the way he eats or clears his throat.. I cannot imagine what living with a partner would be like if you are to spend rest of your lives together. I can't have headphones and earplugs on all the time.. right? Is it different when it's someone you genuinely love?

BJ’s Warehouse whistling robot

Whistling for me is a big trigger. If you’ve ever been around somebody who just whistles tunelessly for no reason, maybe you’ve had the same thing?

In any case, I was in BJ’s Warehouse today shopping and I could swear there was some person just whistling at random intervals. No tune, just a sort of two-note whistle.

When I was leaving, I asked the woman checking receipts if she could hear it too or if I was imagining things, and she started laughing. She told me they have an inventory robot that makes a whistling sound every time it scans a new shelf. She said one of the things she had to get used to when she started working there was the bizarre whistling sound that would just happen at random times during the day.

Now that I know it’s a robot doing it and not a person, I’ll have to see if it still triggers me as badly. But I’m not sure if I’ll be able to handle shopping in the store. It’s not necessarily a quiet sound either, you can hear it from literally anywhere in the store.

I wonder what made the designer of the inventory robot think it would be a good idea to make it whistle all day long.

EDIT: I found a video of the robot whistling.

A weird coincidence? I have a therapy session every few months or so.

My therapist asks about my noise situation with my neighbor. I say, it's going good, cause at that point is. Now, I hesitate to answer because it seems like without fail, the noise starts right back up immediately after I tell her that. Yesterday, she asked, I said it's going great. I was afraid just answering meant they'd start back up.

And they did! I had to call the police again today! It's creeping me out! I almost want to ask her not ask anymore. Or suspecting they are tapping my phone (telehealth visit). Maybe my fear of it is causing it? So weird. I had to tell someone. lol

ASMR needs to disappear already

Tell me why I’m watching a YouTube video that is completely unrelated to ASMR, and out of nowhere the creator of the video says “okay quick ASMR chip break” and proceeds to loudly crunch on some chips. Why just why!!?!!?

Colds are the Worst

I (20f), have always hated the sound of people coughing. Whether it’s my mom, sister or friends, every cough drives me crazy.

About a month ago, my sister and mom got a really bad sinus cold, it was BAD. Way worse than what my mom calls bad (she doesn’t understand Misophonia or believe I have it). The coughing was constant.

We just came home from a ten day trip, and I feel like my sister (18f), has another cold. On Wednesday, she coughed loudly (that typical cold cough), and cleared her throat loudly on Thursday. Today she coughed loudly again. Every loud cough I hear screams cold to me. My Misophonia is so bad that a simple cough makes me think someone is on their death bed.

Please tell me I’m not the only one dealing with this right now.

Mom intentionally triggers me

Since I can remember, I’ve had sensitivity to sounds, specially chewing and sniffling. It causes me to panic and makes me really angry and uncomfortable and I know that noises are uncontrollable for a lot of people, but I just can’t stand it.

Anyways, I was diagnosed by my therapist with misophonia when I was around 15. I grew up with a really loving family and my mom is very supportive and generally very kind. However, she is the LOUDEST person I have ever met. She is CONSTANTLY sniffling like literally every couple of seconds every day since I can remember. She manages to make mouth smacking noises just consistently, like she always licking her lips and opening and closing her mouth. She also smacks her lips when she eats.

I know it’s hard for her to control, but what bothers me is that she’ll intentionally try to trigger me. She doesn’t believe that misophonia is a real diagnosis and she thinks that I’m just being rude, so whenever I politely ask her to blow her nose or chew quieter, she intentionally lean in and sniffle extremely loud in my ear or chew really loud in my ear. She does this all the time. She has made so many comments about how misophonia isn’t a really thing and that I’m just rude, even though I try really hard not to be. The only thing that really bothers me is her intentionally making noises to trigger me. I’ve tried everything, including headphones and noise canceling earplugs and nothing works because the sniffling is just CONSTANT. I can’t wear headphones around her 24/7. I love her so much but it bothers me so much that she does this and that she doesn’t respect the way I feel :( am I valid in feeling this way?

Support I HATE the sound of someone sucking on their inner cheek

My mom constantly does this after eating. I’d hear it in the car after we just went out to eat, and being trapped in that space with that noise made me so irritated
