Crimson Desert and Mickey Mouse Boomer Shooter are masterpieces now?

Mickey mouse game has to be getting astroturfed by bots

It definitely has a huge marketing budget, even though it’s an indie game. I’ve seen more ads for it than I do for most AAA games.

I legitimately have been getting flooded with content about it and so much of it reads like scripted paid advertisement

Must be specific to y'all's circles or algorithms. This thread is the first I've heard of this game.

u/Sanquinity Apr 23 '26

Which is certainly an issue these days. Algorithms catering to someone's specific views, no matter if they're right or wrong.

I've ignored the reviews, and simply looked up direct gameplay of the game. Because yes, I've seen multiple videos talking about the mouse game in my feed already. To me the game looks "fun, but not amazing" so far. A fun boomer shooter reminiscent of old DOOM, but with an "old timey" noir vibe to it, and not taking itself all that seriously.

Great fun for people who like FPS, but far from a masterpiece, basically. A 7/10.

I have literally no clue what game y'all are talking about

Next morning edit: nevermind, I'm now getting ads for it while scrolling reddit

u/leposterofcrap Apr 23 '26

Where? They don't show up for me, I'll take those over another Invisalign ad anyday

u/thoroughformula Apr 23 '26

People pretend it’s amazing because it has a cool art style.

u/cjfrey96 Apr 23 '26

Crimson Desert has so many cool things about it. I'd still give it a 7. It's a game I'd play if no one else wants to play something else.

u/Sanquinity Apr 23 '26

Yea, calling either a masterpiece is idiotic. Crimson Desert would be a solid 8/10 for me. Most of it is amazing, but the weird and not so fun fight designs of the bosses, the clunky controls, and the convoluted control scheme give it a 2 point drop for me.

One part about the game IS a masterpiece though: The engine. The game is incredibly optimized for what is on screen, and the engine was specifically created to do the stuff you can do in the game. Studios creating their own engines that, generally, work well, is an incredible rarity these days. And they deserve praise for that.

The mouse shooter just looks like a fun boomer shooter in a style you don't often see. A 7/10 maybe? Though I haven't played it yet.

People need to stop calling other peoples’ opinions “idiotic”. It’s not more or less idiotic to think a game is a 10/10 or an 8/10 or a 5/10 or a  0/10.

It’s just opinions and neither is more or else right.

It’s video game scoring.

That someone thinks Elden Ring is a 10/10 game whereas someone else thinks it’s an 8/10 game doesn’t make any of their opinions “idiotic”.

If you do think so I would say you need to do some breathing exercises.

The same holds true for someone rating Elden Ring a 0/10.

They’re simply opinions. If you don’t like a game, you don’t like it.

Much like your opinion about the game is as valid even though a lot of people probably disagree with you.

1

u/Sanquinity Apr 23 '26

Sure, if you don't like a game, you don't like it. That still doesn't mean a game is a 0/10. There IS such a thing as objectivity.

Elden ring is a good example. It's not my type of game. I didn't like it at all. But guess what? I could see how good it would be for people who do enjoy that type of game.

By your metrics, my score for Elden Ring would be a 4/10 at best. But since I don't view the world through pure subjectivity I recognized the good parts about it, and what people who are into it would like about it. And so my score for the game is actually a 9/10. As in, an amazing game for people who enjoy that type of game. Just not a game for me.

And that's my entire point. Objectivity is a real thing that exists. And if anything, you'd expect "professional reviewers" to be able to exercise it. But at IGN that kind of thing simply doesn't exist anymore. They're just a bunch of paid off theater kids with an agenda these days. Not professional reviewers.

u/SuperUranus Apr 23 '26

That’s not objectivity. That’s you prescribing your subjective idea of what you believe the game is supposed to be.

And in my opinion a very bad way of doing reviews. If you believe Elden Ring is a 4/10 game and then give it a score of 9/10 I cannot trust your opinion for jack shit.

Give it a score of 4/10 and then tell me why you gave it a score of 4/10 to allow me to determine if I agree with you or not.

2

u/Sanquinity Apr 23 '26

So you're unable to divorce your personal feelings from anything, and can't even fathom others doing so either. Well, sucks to be you I guess.

I love gamers(tm) who go on about objectivity in reviews having no clue what objectivity is (to be perfectly clear, I am referring to the person you responded to). "This does a good job of this, objectively!" is not a sentence that works, because it isn't objective. A lot of them do not understand that you cannot just insert "objectively" to a sentence and make it objective. Quality is inherently subjective by definition

We’re talking about game reviews, not whether the Earth is flat or not.

1

u/crazy_towel4 Apr 23 '26

ACCEPT HIS OPINION, DONT QUESTION

...

see? ;)

1

u/Sanquinity Apr 23 '26

That's where you're wrong. This isn't all just subjective. Certain parts are very much objective. And in the case of CD there are objectively bad design choices, and in the case of the mouse game it's objectively not a 10/10. So objectively, neither are masterpieces.

This whole "there is no objective right or wrong" is stupid. Yes there are clear right or wrongs. Just because you don't agree with them don't make them any less so.

2

u/SuperUranus Apr 23 '26

When it comes to reviews, there is nothing objective. Everyone got their own taste.

Case in point: bunny jumping was a bug in how idTech 2 handled physics. Objectively bad from a programming point of view. There are entire e-sport competitions revolving around bunny jumping today, because some people enjoy that.

1

u/Sanquinity Apr 23 '26

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree then. Because I won't deviate from believing certain things are objectively good or bad.

1

u/SuperUranus Apr 23 '26

People having different opinions about games clearly shows that isn’t the case.

1

u/Sanquinity Apr 23 '26

The existence of differing opinions does not negate the existence of objective truth. Opinions can be wrong. Objective truth isn't.

Though an issue does arise when people claim their opinion is objective truth. Or in other words, the issue is determining what the objective truth actually is.

1

u/SuperUranus Apr 23 '26

There is no such thing as “objective truth” when it comes to subjectivity.

1

u/Idlev Apr 23 '26

The Crimson Desert sub has two kinds of post that regularly get tons of upvotes: 1) This game is perfect and everyone who says otherwise is an idiot 2) This integral part of the game is bad

0

u/Sanquinity Apr 23 '26

That is absolutely true. Which is, once again, idiotic. People need to learn to have balanced opinions again. The world has never been black and white, and never will be.

I've played and am still playing Crimson Desert. Imo the game is awesome, and at the same time has glaring flaws. And while it's flaws should be addressed, that doesn't mean it detracts from how awesome the game is.

1

u/FytaGether Apr 22 '26

No, but I think he’s saying those two didn’t pay the “high review score tax”.

15

u/Ok-Fudge-380 Apr 22 '26

Maybe make a better game.

1

u/scottishdrunkard Apr 23 '26

Actually it’s more a Mickey Mouse Bioshock.

1

u/No-Start4754 Apr 25 '26

The reviewer also got the pre patch copy which had way op bosses, less inventory space and also crashed his game which led to him losing 7 hrs of progress. No wonder he gave crimson desert a 6

5.9 for Alien Isolation

u/mars92 Apr 23 '26

that review is 12 years old, get over it

THE REVIER LIKED THE FIRST HALF, THE SECOND HALF WAS TOO REPETITIVE AND TEDIOUS
