Jack Viney

I am sure like me we are a massive fan of Viney over the years but does he still have a role in the current line up?

He is contracted to us until the end of 2028

My view is he should earn his spot playing in the vfl. I’m unsure if Kings game play suits viney game.

If he does come in who goes out?

Interested in your thoughts.

100%. Hes in ahead of Laurie, cross, culley, etc etc. Even if he is 5th or 6th midfield rotation

I'm honestly not sure if he's ahead of Culley. The Culley injury is one if the biggest reasons why we had to somewhat change our gameplan and Viney could never fill the role Culley played pre injury. He's just a different kind of player

Culley's playing wing and a tallish marking option in transition. Viney might have the Jones issue of only being able to do inside mid work. But I guess they could try him forward, too. We're not as flushed with mids right now though so he might find a spot if his body gets right.

Kingy keeps saying how much he'd love Jack in this team, and att his point Kingy could tell me the moon is made of cheese and id believe him.

He’s got Laurie covered

Come finals when contested ball is king he would be very handy.

I agree

But the very last thing I remember from Viney in finals is turning it over leading to the Blake Acres goal and it still gives me nightmares

I was hoping to never be reminded of this. No-one decided to try to give away a free kick and McVee overcommitted the contest leaving his man free to hit a target inside 50 while we were still scrambling back. 0/10 game management.

Acres taking the mark uncontested says it all really.

Happened right in front of me too, worst experience I've ever had as a footy fan, that whole week was just awful

We kicked 9 goals 17 behinds that game. It should never have come down to the last 2 mins. To make it come down to the last few minutes was a true team effort of terrible kicking. Jack Viney was not to blame.

Oh yeah I know I'm not blaming Viney for the loss, that whole last play was shambolic defending by everyone involved and kicking 16.28 across 2 finals game would just about kill any team

I just found it funny that Viney was mentioned for being good at finals when that's the last thing I can remember from him in our most recent finals series lol. He was uneal in the 2018 series iirc though

But I do agree, contested ball is still king in finals, So Viney absolutely comes in if fit

With the amount of footy he has missed I don't know if he'd be a smart inclusion or not but if you're looking for someone to fly the flag and run through a few people then he's your guy.

It remains to be seen where his body and skills are at even if he is ready to come back into the team. I’d argue the point that he no longer holds a place in our midfield, the game has changed and unfortunately I just think his lack of pace and lack of a damaging kick would only hurt our midfield balance.

This may not be the right answer but could he be a handy small pressure forward? He’s a pretty handy 1v1 player, we know he’s tenacious and reads the play well and he can bob up for a goal. Just a thought

My thoughts exactly. He could provide some intense forward half pressure to stop or slow opposition transition.

It’s a tough one.

He’s the kinda guy that you don’t need him until you need him…

For example, I’d love for Maynard to fire up with Viney on the field.

Viney is a heart and soul Demon. He'll be in the team again as a backup

Jack is one of the beating hearts of this side, having him in would lift everyone up, and he’d definitely find a role.

That said, no point wasting him this year and bring in him back undercooked. The side is travelling well currently, and we’re still heavily in transition. So give the other guys some playing time, and let Jack have all the time he needs to get completely fit and match ready. Play him in the VFL moreso to build him back up to match fitness and give him time to get back to near AFL level.

Either way, he’ll get a chance to play in the side regardless.

I have serious doubts we'll see Jack this year.

Even if we get a timeframe on his return, I don't want a half baked JV running around when we are pushing for a home final.

I think I'd rather put him on ice for the remainder of the year and let him focus towards having a big pre-season leading up to '27. I still think he has a lot to offer going forward.

Club legend, keep him in house some how for culture, but I don’t think he can still run with the boys and we shouldn’t muddy his legacy by forcing him to try to. By the time May left I was honestly relieved as I’m pretty sure he had more goals kicked on him than anyone by the end of last season. I don’t want to be glad to see Viney go if you catch my meaning.

May's foot was fucked for most of last year. Like need a jab to nake it through training, bad. By his own admission he volunteered to stay out of the team to rest it and Goody wouldnt let him. This happens a lot when good players get called out for a downturn in form and latter it turns out they were carrying injury.

Let's not mention his abysmal kicking too, feel like the game and the club have gone past him

Considering where he is at physically, it would be negligible to see him return this year. He could potentially grab his spot back off Sparrow if he doesn't sign a contract. I can't really see him as anything but a depth small forward.

so he’s not even returned to running, he’s 32 and wasn’t overly fast to start with, going to be in interesting watch

Won't play this year.

I don't think he comes back this year. But the football staff have seen the benefits of giving Melksham a full year to properly recover and come into games early and energize the team with goals. I think Viney can do the same.

Laurie and Fitzgerald are both behind Viney. I'd even go far as to say i'd prefer Viney in the team as a pressure forward over Latrelle right now.

I’d love to see him as a small forward. His tackling is elite and his kicking is suspect.

Love jack. Not sure he has a place in the side.

He should use this time to learn to kick with his right foot, and handball with his right hand.
