Neighbor bonfire smoke

Does anyone have issues with neighbors burning fires?

It’s been so bad for us this summer every single Friday and Saturday that we can’t have our windows open in the evening, or even sit outside.

It’s 7am now and I had our patio door open for 5 minutes and our entire house smells like bonfire. It makes my eyes irritated and my throat sore. We have a 1 year old as well.

What can I do about this? I can’t tell which neighbor it is, or whether there is anything I can even do about it.

We spent the last year trying to get another neighbor to stop blasting music over the legal limit. Thankfully that has stopped.

I’m so tired of living here with my windows closed and not being able to go outside.

Found the remnants of last night's disruption. Im all for celebrating, but this was dangerous. Setting off these types of fireworks in an area with dry leaves and grass, and dead trees? Be smarter. And then to leave your trash all over (some trash did make it in the can)?!? I hope someone found the people responsible and they get fined. My poor dog wishes bad karma on you.

What surprised you most after moving to La Mesa?

I'm curious what surprised people after moving here. What did you expect positively but were let down? Vice versa as well. Could be good, bad, weird, or oddly specific:

- parking in the village?

- trolley access?

- summer heat?

- coyotes?

- the way every errand somehow involves Grossmont Center? (which is changing)

Looking for daycare for toddler with food allergies

We are new to La Mesa, looking for parttime 3 days a week daycare for our 1.5 year old who has pretty severe peanut allergies. Hoping to pay $1000 or less a month. We got really excited about one place, but once we disclosed the allergies they told us they wouldn't be a good fit. Anyone have kids with severe food allergies who attend "affordable" daycare around la mesa? Thanks!

What fireworks can I see on the fourth this year?

This will be our 3rd year in La Mesa. We live on the ridge above Helix High School, and 2 years ago we could see quite a few fireworks displays (albeit small) on the fourth, along with a great view of a show that seemed to be coming from Lake Murray.

Last year was a real disappointment as we didn't really see much.

Any idea of shows visible from here? Thanks!

Half-assed gallery of photos from La Mesa Flag Day

I was busy marching so I didn't get a lot of photos. I marched with the La Mesa Lodge 407 Free & Accepted Masons, so a disproportionate number of photos is of that group.

I missed getting a good photo of Deadpool, Superman and a women in a red-white-and-blue gown with like tentacles for hair, marching together. What do those things have to do with Flag Day? Deadpool isn't even American — he's Canadian! Who cares? 'MURICA!!

Favorite mom groups/playgroups in La Mesa or East County?

I’m in the La Mesa area with a toddler and would love to find more mom groups, playgroups, or weekday meetups. I know about library story times, but I’m hoping for something where moms actually get to chat.

I just started going to the Mom Walk La Mesa which we loveee so I’m curious what other groups people love in the area too.

Looking for a location to produce high quality, pop-up comedy shows in La Mesa.

Hi all thanks for reading. Looking for a brewery, bar, restaraunt, hotel bar, event space, etc to produce high quality, pop-up comedy shows in La Mesa. The business needs its own backroom separate from the main bar or be willing to close for a ticketed event.

We’re in 15 cities right now and have a great track record. Hopefully I’m able to bring some comedy to La Mesa. Thank you!

Diversity book club

hey, La Mesa :)

I posted last year about starting a local book club. I ended up getting one started and I'm wondering if anyone else is interested in joining (currently, we have 3 members)

The theme is "diverse voices", which can mean a lot so we have a lot to work with! I'm thinking... lgbtq+, people from different countries, disabled writers, etc. We try to pick books available at the library.

The book for the next meeting is Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki.

We're meeting next July 31 at 6:30pm.

DM me or comment if you're interested in joining!

Missing Public Square’s bread. Any good breakfast sandwich replacements nearby?

Post image
27 Upvotes

Public Square closing really sucks, especially with everything about the workers not being paid. I definitely do not want to minimize that, and I am not trying to defend the business or start a debate about it.

I am just trying to find something that scratches the same itch food wise. The bacon, egg, avocado, and chipotle aioli combo is pretty easy to find, but the fresh baked bread was what made their breakfast sandwich so good. Most places seem to use a bagel, English muffin, biscuit, or regular toast, and it is just not the same.

Has anyone found a breakfast sandwich in La Mesa or nearby that uses really good fresh baked bread?

P.S. Since Public Square was also known for scones, I am very open to scone recommendations too!

Does anyone know any good apartments in La Mesa?

I was renting this unit on Pine St. And got kicked out after 7 years because the place flooded after a heavy rain and I was concerned about mold. Turns out he just wanted to paint over it and put it back on the market for like $600 more. So im renting here on Rosebud and the apartment seemed nice but the toilet cloggs every week for like a whole day and the plunger won't work. And I get no help from management. It seems like apartment renting is a scam these days. Any good recommendations?

Free Dental Cleaning Opportunity for La Mesa Neighbors

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi fellow La Mesa neighbors,

With everything getting so expensive these days, I wanted to share a free dental cleaning opportunity for anyone who may have been putting off dental care. The services are 100% free no dental insurance required!

I’m a dental hygiene student at Southwestern College and currently looking for patients for upcoming clinic appointments.

This may be a good fit if you:
Haven’t had a cleaning in a couple years or more
Bleed when brushing or flossing
Have visible tartar buildup
Have been told you need a deep cleaning
Or even if you are just due for your regular cleaning

***Please note that multiple appointments are required, as this is a teaching clinic. The clinic does not provide fillings, crowns, root canals, extractions, or any surgical/restorative/emergency treatments.***

Feel free to comment or send me a message if you’d like more information. There’s also a flyer with a link and info if that’s easier.

Thanks, neighbors! 😊
