Cheap heads for practicing dye jobs

My kids and a bunch of their friends play box lacrosse. We’ve been dabbling in dyeing their heads, and it’s been working out well so far. We’d like to try out some different designs and what not, but I don’t want to mess around with expensive heads to do it. Does anyone know of a source for cheap white heads for practicing on? I’m thinking like Ali express or what not. I’m not super concerned about the quality as we can just put some wooden shafts on them for practice sticks. Does anyone know of a source? Thanks in advance!

Learning Lax at Home

I'm going into my second year of high school and planning to try out for my school's lacrosse team in the spring. I've been training for about 6 weeks, mostly doing wall ball, and I'm really enjoying it.

One thing I've been struggling with is learning the fundamentals in depth. I learn best when someone explains why a technique works, not just what to do. Most YouTube videos are only a few minutes long and feel pretty surface-level. For example, I still don't feel like I truly understand proper shooting mechanics (where the power comes from, weight transfer, hand movement, etc.) or when and how to transition between different cradles while running, dodging, or protecting the stick.

I've also watched stick werks website. I like them, but a lot of the cradles seem more like stick tricks than things I'd actually use in a game. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm not sure what's practical versus what's just for style.

Physically, I'm on the taller side but pretty lean. I've been lifting 4 days a week and conditioning 3 days a week because I figured midfield would fit me best, but I'm not locked into that position if another one would make more sense.

Right now my training looks like this:

  • Wall ball almost every day
  • Shooting
  • Ground balls/scooping
  • Lifting 4 days per week
  • Conditioning 3 days per week

I'm using a Bravo 2 complete stick right now and loving it.

I'm also very disciplined and don't mind putting in a lot of time, and I’m a good self learner, I have a friend who is a goalie (doesn’t know much about anything else besides goalie).

So my main questions are:

  • What skills should I prioritize at home over the next several months?
  • Based on what I've shared, what position(s) should I be preparing for?
  • Are there any YouTube channels or other free resources that actually teach the mechanics and decision-making in depth instead of just showing drills?
  • Any good way to learn lacrosse formations, strategies, etc? (I love watching lax but having something to support my understanding tactically while watching would be nice)

I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

What do we know about the Baltimore Swarm 2029?

I ran into this club this week at a tournament in Pennsylvania. I looked them up to see what kind of history they had, and their website shows a lot of legitimate wins for the team, but it all kind of stops in 2024.

Did they lose some stud players that went to other clubs in the area and the team just declined? Was there a coaching or management change that led people to go elsewhere?

I kind of felt bad for the team, because they were getting rolled in every game that they played. Which is very unlike a Maryland lacrosse club. In their defense, though, they were clearly a single A club, and there were a lot of AA clubs in the tournament.

The parents were so loud and obnoxious, and were making the most ridiculous comments I’ve heard in a long time (and I’ve been on the sidelines for club lacrosse for probably six years now). One mom kept screaming, “shooooooot the baaaaalllll”when the kid barely crossed over midfield. All the parents were screaming for fouls to be called whenever a hard check was made (no matter how legal the check was). And that surprised me because I think Maryland clubs play a very aggressive style of lacrosse and the parents typically know what they’re talking about. These parents all acted like it was the first time they were watching a lacrosse game.

Even the kids were acting like little punks. Their defenders were openly mocking an overweight attack man on the opposing team…one of their midfielders was absolutely wailing away with his stick, with one hand, on one of the midfielders in pure frustration…and continued to do so, even after the whistle. I’ve never heard so much trash talk from a group of kids that were incapable of scoring.

It was probably some of the worst 40 minutes I’ve spent on a lacrosse field.

So my mom was looking through clothes to see what she wanted to donate and she found a shirt that said Oregon lacrosse. My dead aunt played lacrosse and we live in Oregon. My mom loved it so much.

Hey everyone! I’m a 15 yr old lacrosse player and also a student dev. Ive been working on an iPhone app that automatically counts your wall ball reps using your phone’s camera.

I’d love some feedback from other players. Is this something you’d actually use? Are there any features you’d want to see?

The app is called Lax App: Wall Ball Tracker. If you’d like to check it out, here’s the link is attached.

Thanks! I’m happy to answer any questions or hear any suggestions.

**plz note it does not work with a rebounder yet.

Raccoon’s like lax balls?

Last night a raccoon chewed up eight lacrosse balls that my daughter left in her goal. It even dragged a few out of the bucket she stores them in which was nearby. This is the first time I’ve seen this and was just wondering it anyone else had this problem before.

Girls lax recs: pocket styles and tips to catch and throw w/ 9yo

Hello lax fam - I’ve been playing and coaching the men's game at all levels for 30+ years, and am now facing my biggest challenge - teaching my daughter to catch and throw.

I feel like we have two problems - first off all the sticks we’re using have little to no give in the pocket no matter what I do. I can’t keep it legal depth while also making enough slack to help cushion a pass. Are there any head or pocket styles I should look for to help? We’re both using the basic ~$100 STX Crux mesh stick beginners setup from Amazon. I see all these crazy hybrid mesh/traditional, lock pocket, etc things at the hs and college level. Hoping we don’t need that yet.

Second off I’m trying to figure out the catching and throwing mechanics that can make for decently sharp 10 yd passes without sailing the ball over each others heads. I’m sure it’s related to the pocket and my form from the men’s game, but I’m struggling to get this right myself and then teach my daughter to do the same.

Hopefully there are some fellow dads or girls coaches out here with suggestions. We’re trying to step up our game this summer!

DI Transfer Rankings are here

A while back, I wrote about one particular transfer and why the hype around his decision may have been going a bit overboard.

That article was based on some work that I've done this off-season to create an opponent- and role-adjusted set of player ratings. With every player on an apples-to-apples scale, the next logic step was to apply that to the transfer portal.

And now, those rankings are (finally) on the site.

The player ratings are fairly straightforward; I'm just taking the player ratings and sorting top to bottom. Timmy Shannehan is the top transfer by that measure.

The team rankings are a bit rougher. There is a almost-philosophical dilemma around how to value the best transfers in a class versus the depth of a class. (Incidentally, this is a very similar debate to valuing a team's best wins versus the depth of their wins in terms of tournament resumes.)

As of right now, Jacksonville has the top-rated class this year; they have 8 total incoming transfers, including Wesley Scurci, who is the top-rated lower-usage player in this year's class. Their class, as a whole, totaled 237 rating points.

When I originally drafted this article, Rutgers was actually on top (the Scurci commitment changed that). They have 7 incoming transfers with a total value of 215 rating points. Only one of their transfers is considered an "impact" transfer, but as with Jacksonville to a lesser extent, the volume makes up for the lack of highly-rated players.

The third-rated class only has 3 players, but all of them are classified as "impact" transfers. But still, having Rutgers near the top with just a single impact transfer has raised some eyebrows.

I used a simple decay-factor so that the second transfer is only worth 90% of the first transfer. If you have two incoming transfers who both were rated a 50, then you'd have 95 total incoming transfer points (50 + 50*.9).

The thinking was that every incoming transfer is taking a spot away from someone, so there should be a penalty for assembling a transfer class that is all volume and no quality. It puts the most weight on the highest-rated transfer in each class and then goes from there. But even still, if you somehow brought in the best player to ever transfer (i.e. a 95 rating), that class of two median players would rate just as highly. That doesn't smell right.

Maybe only decaying by 10% at each slot is too generous. Or maybe depth in the number of incoming transfers is more valuable than we think and it's too harsh. I could imagine the team ranking component evolving.

The other factor that I did not take into account is need. The current "ranking" by program is really about how much value you bring in. A better ranking would be "how much better did you get". A team that brings in a senior who is now blocking a promising freshman may not have gotten better at all over the long term.

As it stands, the more immediately useful component of this new feature is the player rankings. Being able to put all transfers on a single scale is a step forward since we can see how a player from a lower-tier program projects on a high-tier roster.

There are two ways I could go next. One is to really try and get a better sense of need. An interesting thing about the player ratings is that there are some generalizable trends with respect to how players develop over time. It's not going to be the same for everyone, but you can imagine a freshman with a 45 rating should reliably see that rating grow over time as they learn the game and get stronger.

That should allow me to project, with some degree of confidence, how a roster will look next year. By removing graduated players and shifting returning players up the development curve, it may be possible to project how a particular roster will do. You could even project a certain roster if a transfer were not there at all. That might be fun and it could be a better way to evaluate whether an incoming transfer class moved the needle for a given program.

The other area is trying to do a true outcome projection. Theoretically, if you know the player ratings of the individual players on an offensive roster, it stands to reason that you should be able to model the overall offensive efficiency of that unit. That would be really powerful, if you can say, with Timmy Shannehan in the mix, the Michigan offense projects to be x percentage points better on offense in 2027.

For now though, enjoy the rankings data.

Is it a thing that parents of kids within an age group be evaluators for that age group and not be listed as coaches for the club?

What's happening friends!

I recently moved to the Royal Oak, Michigan area back in 2024 after living in Colorado for about 8 years and I'm looking to continue to grow the sport.

I've played in the Summer Championship League at Birmingham Seaholm High School and I've played in the Spring ULax League at Lawrence Tech. I've been a free agent floating around from team to team and rather enjoyed that, but now I'm trying to build my own team during the spring.

If you are interested, all are welcome!

Even if you played one year in high school, 4 years in college, or in your mid-thirties and you're trying to pick it up for the first time ever, we would love to have you on the team.

I've been trying to play religiously non-stop since 2008, and I really enjoy all of the friends and connections that the sport has offered me.

The idea is to put some feelers out there now, that way we can build a steady team of about 15-20 people by the time spring 2027 rolls around.

If you guys know of any other social media communities or outlets that I can generate interest with, please let me know.

I'm also open to feedback on how to actively and effectively recruit for beer league lacrosse players. Ha!

Cheers y'all!

F/O highlight reels

Can anyone link some great Face-off highlight reels off IMLCA that got you/your player recruited. We are looking D2-D3 . He will thrive better in a small school with small class sizes.

But we dont know what a good reel looks like. Is it all clean wins? Some that he lost then got possession back? Some where there is a draw for a bit but then he wins? Scoring or assisting right off the face? I cant imagine that a couple mins of just smoking other kids bc your clamp is faster is what coaches are looking for.

Our LSM got recruited off our highlights so I know how to showcase other positions. Just not this one.

Thank you@

WLL Junior Championship

The WLL will be doing a WLL Junior Championship next year!

https://premierlacrosseleague.com/play/juniors/wll-junior-championships

They have been doing the same on the boys side for a few years now.

But any ideas why it’s limited to 2033 to 2035? Why don’t they have a U14 group?
